SNOW POLO WORLD CUP ST. MORITZ 2019 7 8 SNOW POLO WORLD CUP ST. MORITZ 2019 2018’s three-day Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz spectacular was bigger and better than ever before. Spectators and players alike enjoyed the perfect combination of sunshine, socialising and Swiss hospitality, a truly magical experience for all involved. Snow, sun and a bevy of fur-clad spectators, with their eye permanently fixed on the snow-covered lake in the heart of Switzerland’s Engadin Valley – what more could you ask for? Each year, hordes of snow polo fans and followers head to this Alpine mecca to witness the winter season’s highlight, the Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz. As The ‘Godfather of Snow Polo’ Reto Gaudenzi, the man responsible for introducing snow polo to the world and now CEO and organiser extraordinaire of the best snow polo tournament in the world put it, “God must be a polo player”. The ‘Man in the Sky’ had turned his barometer to ‘fair and dry for polo’ between 26 – 28 January as not only had the lake’s ice been frozen to the optimum depth, but the snow over the week before had been cool and substantial. During Friday and Saturday, it quickly became clear who the two strongest teams were going to be. Cartier and Maserati bounced through their initial matches against Badrutt’s Palace and Azerbaijan Land of Fire respectively, with unsurprising wins marking their dominance on the tournament rankings. But, if Cartier and Maserati had the leading poll positions, Azerbaijan Land of Fire had the spectators’ hearts. First time Snow Polo World Cup competitors, the boys in white from the Middle East/Europe border came to St. Moritz with not only their noble steeds, but three reserves, their own band, a fully

SNOW POLO WORLD CUP ST. MORITZ 2019 9 10 SNOW POLO WORLD CUP ST. MORITZ 2019 functioning catering department rustling up Azeri treats for spectators on the sidelines and their own throng of spectators with musical instruments and loud singing voices. After two days of competitive action, it was Cartier and Maserati who faced each other in The Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz 2018 Final. As the first ball fired into play, the tentative hush that had settled on the St. Moritz grandstand rallied into cries of elation as the Cartier boys thundered up and down the field, with Maserati close on their heels. Cartier may have led going into half-time, but this meant nothing in the Maserati camp as the players went into the third chukka with renewed vigour and fire in their bellies. Hissam Ali Hyder immediately took control of the ball, with Gerardo Mazzini and Robert Strom trailing in his wake. Cartier had been momentarily taken by surprise and with a piece of poetic play from Strom as he dribbled past not one, nor two, but three red shirts to goal, the Maserati crowd erupted as the scores read 3½-3 going into the final chukka. Chris Hyde exploded onto the field for the final big push, he perfected a penalty 4, putting his team ahead 4-3½. Maserati tried and tried to push forward into Cartier’s half and with 1.41 minutes left on the clock, it looked like they might convert one last attempt on goal. Tick, tick, tick…and it was all over. The crowd went wild as Rommy Gianni successfully retained the Snow Polo World Cup title for a third consecutive year and Chris ‘The Prof’ Hyde held high the trophy for his seventh win!

the idea and that was Reto Gaudenzi with snow polo”. As if the idea of snow polo wasn’t enough, the mind bending proposal of playing upon the frozen lake was formed and in 1984 the first test-run was staged, which was swiftly followed by the first Snow Polo World Cup in 1985. The founders certainly showed ingenuity in raising funds, even auctioning off plots of ice on the lake for the first polo gala. Dividends were distributed in the form of drinks at the Carlton Hotel’s Polo Bar. The first event with Cartier added the weight of their sponsorship in 1985 and continues to do so to this day. Today’s Board members of the Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz have all won the tournament – Reto Gaudenzi (5 wins), Piero Dillier (3 wins) and Andy Küchel (1 win). What began on the snow of St. Moritz 35 years ago started a worldwide trend — nowadays, polo on snow is played across the globe from Aspen in the US and Cortina in Italy to Tianjin in China. Still, the St. Moritz original remains the most prestigious polo tournament. In 2018, over 15,000 spectators gathered on the frozen lake to experience the elegance, glamour and competition of The Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz.

TEAM CARTIER 2018 WINNERS TEAM CARTIER Following his third consecutive win in The Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz, we spoke to Team Captain Rommy Gianni about what he loves about this tournament, held each year in the beautiful home of snow polo.

How did it feel to win The Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz in 2016, 2017 & 2018? Winning The Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz for three years in a row has been absolutely amazing!

What makes The Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz so special? The unique location, the international teams and the great atmosphere you get from polo on snow, these are the things that make it really special.

What has been your greatest snow polo memory? The snow polo tournaments I’ve won with my Do you have a particular training schedule father in the past. before the tournament gets underway? My training is quite intense. I train six to seven days a week for three to four hours a day. I do boxing, gym workouts in general, a lot of cardio and of course I ride as much as I can. I also follow a sports diet to be as fit as possible for the events.

Do you prefer snow polo or grass polo? I like both grass polo and snow polo. Polo on grass is faster and polo on snow is more physical. They are both amazing to play.

Outside of St. Moritz, where is your favourite place to play polo? I enjoy playing in Argentina very much and St. Tropez as well.

Who are your favourite teammates to play with in St. Moritz? There is no doubt that Dario Musso is the best polo mate I have played with in years! Juan Cruz Greguoli is a great player as well and of course Chris Hyde.

What is the most challenging aspect of The Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz The Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz is very competitive. Each game I have played is like a Final. The training in before is very tough, in most cases it rains very hard and it’s very cold! But it’s a must if you want to be competitive for the tournament.

Bollini commented, “I am very proud to play for the USA, it never crossed my mind I would be able to do it, I was so excited, I couldn’t sleep. www.cigarmust.ch www.lacasadelhabanolugano.ch RULES OF THE GAME

Two of the fundamental rules in polo are the line of the ball and the right of way, irritatingly for newcomers to polo these can also be the two most confusing elements of polo to understand. When the ball is hit, the direction it is travelling in automatically creates a ‘line’. If a player is following the line of the ball they have the right of way and Although polo can technically be played if another player crosses the line this is a dangerous foul. on any level field of sufficient size, the When two players are approaching the ball from different dimensions of an official international polo angles to the line, the player approaching at the smallest pitch are 182m wide by 274m long. However, angle to the line of the ball has the right of way. snow polo is played on smaller fields which measure 80m by 200m, this is partly due to the higher altitudes of snow polo which results in greater physical exertion.

The goals in St. Moritz are each 7.3m wide and are marked by two posts, unlike other sports, polo goals have no crossbar or net. It is customary for the teams to change the direction they are scoring after each goal, this means that one team does not enjoy an environmental advantage such as wind direction for a prolonged period of time.

Each country ranks players differently, depending on their ability when the player is taking part in that country’s season. Currently there are only a handful of players ranked at 10 goals, one of which is Juan Martín Nero who is playing for Cartier this year in St. Moritz.

Polo ponies make the game possible and most players credit at least 80% of their performance to their ponies, thus making Federation of International Polo (FIP) is them the most important players on the field. AZERBAIJAN HORSE SHOW

Karabakh riders from Azerbaijan will perform their display ‘Land of Fire’ at The Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz 2019. Equestrianism has a long history in Azerbaijan, which was one of the first regions in which the horse was domesticated. The Karabakh horse, originating in the Azerbaijani Karabakh region, is renowned for its good temper, loyalty, strength and speed. The Karabakh horses are mountain horses, so they are not very tall, 1.48-1.52 metres (up to 15 hands). They are slim, with attractive faces and are kind and gentle by nature. Despite their delicate appearance they are known for their stamina and they have been very successful racers. Their suppleness also made them the ideal mount for traditional games like Chovgan and Sur-papa. Karabakh horse is also included on the UNESCO List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Therefore, it was only natural that a fine example of the Azerbaijani Karabakh Horse named Zaman entered the Royal Stables in 1956. ‘Land of Fire’ was created by the Azerbaijan Equestrian Federation to showcase the unique abilities of the country’s native Karabakh horse. The act will not only incorporate action-packed riding but is also set to include an exhilarating acrobatic, Cossack style element. They will be accompanied by the Sarhadchi dance ensemble which will be performing traditional dances.

COMMENTATOR THE VOICE OF POLO JAN-ERIK FRANCK

is widely recognised as The Voice of Polo, commentating across the globe, from Azerbaijan to Dubai. With the ability to commentate in both English and other European languages, Jan-Erik has been keeping spectators entertained for nearly a decade.

Those who are familiar with my style will know that I give my commentary lots of energy and it’s often quite tongue in cheek.

What advice would you give to newcomers to polo commentating? Back off – this is my gig! But seriously, I would advise any newcomers to commentating to not only learn how to play polo but also to play well. It is also important to be updated with any rule changes, as these can alter, even just a little, every year. It helps to know the players you’re speaking about, how they play and how they ride.
