QUAKERS IN THIRSK MONTHLY MEETING 1650-75 The present study investigates the area around Thirsk in Yorkshire and finds evidence that gives a slightly different emphasis from that of Davies. Membership of the local community is apparent, but, because the evidence comes from the account of the sufferings of Friends following their persecution John Woods for holding meetings for worship in their own homes, when forbidden to meet in towns, it shows that the sustained attempt in this area during the decade to prevent worship outside the Established Church did not prevent the Malton,North Yorkshire,England 1660-70 holding of Quaker Meetings for worship in the area.

Minutes. The minutes of the last meeting were accepted as a true record and signed by Cllr. Gilruth. 3. Matters arising. 3.1. Car parking Cllr. Statham informed the meeting that the Stapylton Arms (public house) has placed a ‘No Parking’ sign on the wall adjacent to the road and that road markings indicate areas where cars should not park. 3.2. Election charges The Parish Council noted that election charges which had been proposed by RDC have been dropped. 3.3. Speed signs Cllr. Statham informed the meeting that there will be support for villages which choose to erect signs but that the scope of that support has not been decided – essentially this is a financial matter since the cost of erecting such signs and their maintenance is not clear yet. Cllr. Gibson suggested that a public meeting which focused solely on the matter of speed signs might be held when more information was available. 4. Finance 4.1. Precept The Parish Council decided that, in January, a figure of £800 would be requested from Ryedale District Council, a decrease of £10. 2 4.2. Balance Mrs Clarke (clerk) informed the Parish council that the balance stood at £4,628.83. A discrepancy of £50 in the accounts was explained – Mrs. Clarke had torn up a cheque from Cllr. Metcalfe which should have been paid into the account (a reimbursement for payment for rubble to fill in potholes which was not needed).

    White Horse Hill Geoglyph & hillfort Signposts to Prehistory Location: ‘White Horse’ Hill (SU 301 866) is in Oxfordshire (historically Berkshire), 2.5 km south of the village of Uffington. The hill forms a part of the scarp of the Berkshire Downs and overlooks the Vale of White Horse. Main period: Bronze Age–Iron Age Access & ownership: The site is managed by the National Trust on behalf of English Heritage and is a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Whitehorse Hill is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest. It is signposted from the A420 Swindon to Oxford road, and lies next to the B4507 between Ashbury and Wantage. Parking is available but is subject to a charge for non-members (see National Trust website for details). There is also a small viewing point below the Horse on Dragon Hill road, with parking for six blue badge holders only. Uffington Hill is a site of enduring significance. This complex of prehistoric remains (Fig. 1) is set in the striking natural landscape of the chalk downlands, and includes an Iron Age hillfort (Uffington Castle) and the well-known figure of the White Horse. Other features include a Neolithic long barrow and a Bronze Age round barrow, reused in the Roman and Saxon periods respectively. An enclosure and ring ditch lie to the SW of the hillfort and linear ditches across the landscape are thought to represent Bronze Age land Fig. 1. The White Horse Hill landscape from the air.
