The organisations and agencies which make up the partnership have defined a geographical area which covers the south-west corner of the North York Moors National Park and the northern part of the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The individual organisations recognise that by working together resources can be used more effectively, achieving greater value overall. The agencies involved in the CAN DO Partnership are – the North York Moors National Park Authority, the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, English Heritage, Natural England, Forestry Commission, Environment Agency, Framework for Change, Government Office for Yorkshire and the Humber, Ryedale District Council and Hambleton District Council. The area was selected because of its natural and cultural heritage diversity which includes the highest concentration of ancient woodland in the region, a nationally important concentration of veteran trees, a range of other semi-natural habitats including some of the most biologically rich sites on Jurassic Limestone in the county, designed landscapes, nationally important ecclesiastical sites and a significant concentration of archaeological remains from the Neolithic to modern times. However, the area has experienced the loss of many landscape character features over the last fifty years including the conversion of land from moorland to arable and the extensive planting of conifers on ancient woodland sites.

QUAKERS IN THIRSK MONTHLY MEETING 1650-75 The present study investigates the area around Thirsk in Yorkshire and finds evidence that gives a slightly different emphasis from that of Davies. Membership of the local community is apparent, but, because the evidence comes from the account of the sufferings of Friends following their persecution John Woods for holding meetings for worship in their own homes, when forbidden to meet in towns, it shows that the sustained attempt in this area during the decade to prevent worship outside the Established Church did not prevent the Malton,North Yorkshire,England 1660-70 holding of Quaker Meetings for worship in the area.

    MINUTES OF BYLAND WITH WASS AND OLDSTEAD PARISH COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 8TH OCTOBER 2018 1. Attendees Cllr. Gilruth (Chairman), Cllr. Gibson (Vice chairman), Cllr. Statham, Cllr. Metcalfe. 2. Minutes. The minutes of the last meeting were accepted as a true record and signed by Cllr. Gilruth. 3. Matters arising. 3.1. Car parking Cllr. Statham informed the meeting that the Stapylton Arms (public house) has placed a ‘No Parking’ sign on the wall adjacent to the road and that road markings indicate areas where cars should not park. 3.2. Election charges The Parish Council noted that election charges which had been proposed by RDC have been dropped. 3.3. Speed signs Cllr. Statham informed the meeting that there will be support for villages which choose to erect signs but that the scope of that support has not been decided – essentially this is a financial matter since the cost of erecting such signs and their maintenance is not clear yet. Cllr. Gibson suggested that a public meeting which focused solely on the matter of speed signs might be held when more information was available. 4. Finance 4.1. Precept The Parish Council decided that, in January, a figure of £800 would be requested from Ryedale District Council, a decrease of £10. 2 4.2. Balance Mrs Clarke (clerk) informed the Parish council that the balance stood at £4,628.83. A discrepancy of £50 in the accounts was explained – Mrs. Clarke had torn up a cheque from Cllr. Metcalfe which should have been paid into the account (a reimbursement for payment for rubble to fill in potholes which was not needed).

    Ampleforth Journal 46:1 (1941) 1 & 89; also 47:1 (1942) 21 & 170; and 48:2 (1943) 65 THE STORY OF THE ABBEY LAND Abbot Bede Turner [Maps to accompany this paper are not yet ready] B E F O R E 1 8 0 2 ROM THE ELEVENTH CENTURY TO 1887 the township of Ampleforth had three divisions: Ampleforth St Peter’s; Ampleforth Oswaldkirk; and Ampleforth Birdforth. FThe Ordnance maps published before 1887 show the portions which belong to each division. The claims of each division are made clear by the large grants of the Ampleforth Common, to the Vicar of Ampleforth, the Rector of Oswaldkirk, and to the Rev Croft for Birdforth. The Abbey Title Deeds and the Enclosure Award are the chief sources referred to in this story. The Award is written on ‘23 skins’ with the map of the Common attached. It was signed at Northallerton on the 27th day of January, 1810 by Edward Cleaver, Esq, of Nunnington, and William Dawson, Esq, of Tadcaster, the two gentlemen appointed by the Crown to carry out the enclosure. It was also signed by Thomas Hornsby of Wombleton, Land Surveyor, and by William Lockwood of Easingwold, Attorney. Large portions of the Common were allotted to the Rev Antony Germayne, Vicar of Ampleforth in part for tithes of old enclosure: to the Rev John Pigott, Rector of Oswaldkirk in part for tithes of old enclosure: to the Rev Robert Croft as Lessee for the tithes of old enclosure: to the Prebendal Lord’s rights in St Peter’s: to John Smith, Esq of Ampleforth and to George Sootheran of Ampleforth Outhouses, as Lords of the Manor of Ampleforth in the Oswaldkirk parish.
