Yet, theseth contacts that spanned from the interwar years to the fall of com munism offer a good insight into intellectual, cultural, and political dynamics of the 20 century East-Central Europe. - The conference explores various aspects of these transnational inte- ractions that underscored the uneasy relationship between Christianity and Marxism such as, for example, Christian Socialists’ revolt against in Christian-communistterwar Catholic integralism visions and of theirhumanist cooperation socialist with community, communists the duringissues World War II, the postwar emergence of Marxist revisionism and shared of persecution and accommodation of clergy, or Vatican’s encounters with socialist states. These and other issues occurred, sometimes in a dramatic way, in a multi-religious Yugoslavia, infamous for its link between religion and ethno-nationalism, but also in other countries thus requiring a wide geographical, topical, and temporal approach to the subject. Considering newly available sources and new research perspectives, the goal of the conference is to launch a broad academic debate that provides novel insights into the following issues: Zwischeneuropa Other Europe; 1) Theological and philosophical achievements of left-oriented Christian thought in the interwar and the postwar - 2) Intellectual transfers between religious and secular milieus of East Central Europe and the ones of Western Europe and the Americas; 3) Visions and concepts of Christian socialist movements in Yugoslavia, Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary and elsewhere; - litical agency and socialist establishments; 3) Issues of ideological and political confrontation between Christian po 7 CROSSING THE LINES BETWEEN MARXISM AND CHRISTIANITY IN THE 20TH CENTURY EAST-CENTRAL EUROPE Ostpolitik; 4) Significance of Christian-Marxist dialogue across the “Iron Curtain” for the Vatican’s the New Europe 5) Post-1989 potentials of emancipatory political theological thinking in and beyond. Množicam so obsedli dušo in telo, z bleskom in šumom so jim razdražili čute, gone so jim zagnali v strasti, pamet so jim zmedli in vso zavest razžgali do brezumja. Doslej še nismo vedeli, kaj pomenijo do skrajnosti razbičane duševne sile, kadar jim Mefistofeles šepeta ukaze. Šele zdaj bomo to spoznali, ko zapeljivec zgublja oblast nad svojimi zapeljanci. To niso bili atributi mitične, legendarne, odmaknjene, temveč navzočne, tesnobne, s srčno krvjo ustvarjene in z nami do kraja spojene, odgovorne zgodovine. O zgodovina! Kako smo hrepeneli po tem občutku, krutem in polnem, pomenljivem in odgovornem. Šele zdaj sem dobil občutek, da je skozi našo borno sobico zavel dih elementarne usode. • Political Changes and the National Question in Yugoslavia in the Decade Following the Dispute with the Cominform 1948–1958
M ATEJA R EŽEK Political Changes and the National Question in Yugoslavia in the Decade Following the Dispute with the Cominform 1948–1958 The dispute with the Cominform in 1948 was a dramatic experience for Yugoslav Communists. On the one hand, Yugoslav leaders rejected the So- viet accusations and relentlessly persecuted the supporters of the Comin- form’s resolution; while on the other hand, they made every effort to rec- tify the mistakes of which Stalin charged them, enforcing a large number of measures to prove their obedience to Moscow. Such behavior was dic- tated by ideological ties with the Soviet Union and the fear of armed inter- vention and a consequent loss of power. Aggressive Stalinist methods, es- pecially collectivization, worsened the political and economic crisis that soon forced the Yugoslav leaders to search for new solutions. Moreover, the Yugoslav authorities were under pressure from the West to provide – in exchange for economic, political, and military aid – concessions in the form of democratizing the Yugoslav political order. Determined to devise an alternative to the Soviet model of socialism, the Yugoslav leaders abandoned their rigid imitation of Soviet socialism at the beginning of the fifties and began an adventurous ideological search. Their main source was Marx, while they also drew secretly on works by less “orthodox” authors, particularly by the French utopian socialists. In con- trast to Soviet centralism, they began to propagate Marx’s thesis on the withering away of the state, which postulated that the functions of the state would be gradually taken over by the working class.

  • Pot Slovenskih Izseljencev Na Tuje Is a Well-Designed and Well-Written
REVIEWS 215 But sometimes there is too much of a primary source included directly in the text, and it disturbs the fluency of reading. As an example, in the chapter on "Traveling and emigration agencies in Ljubljana," there are eight pages (134 through 141) entirely taken up with the reproduction of an advertisement about the steamer "George Washington," bound for the United States, enticing potential customers. Interesting and relevant but lengthy materials should be placed in appendices, rather than inserted in the main body of the work, where they can create lengthy breaks in the actual text. They cannot be a substitute for description and analysis of concrete data within a broader framework of a historian's pursuit, even for the general public. This is the impression that the reader, unfortunately, receives from time to time. This is, of course, not to detract from the tremendous accomplishment that Dmovsek achieved with his work, or from the undeniable usefulness of the data he assembled and analyzed, through which Slovene emigration, almost without precedent in the history of small nations, can be better understood. Pot slovenskih izseljencev na tuje is a well-designed and well-written book on Slovene emigration, and makes inviting and stimulating reading for the general readership as well as for professionals who are interested in the topic. In addition to the notes, an index, and a bibliography, the book also contains resumes in English and Gelman. Lea Plut-Pregelj, University of Maryland Miran Hladnik, Slovenska kmeeka povest. Ljubljana: Presernova druzba, 1990. 205 pp.; illustrations, map, tables. Such a concise and lucid exposition of the genre's century-long devel opment (1859-1945 to be precise) is to be admired.

Imena kot Fran Miklošič, Božidar in Anton Raič, Jakob Missia, Stanko Vraz, Fran Ksaver Meško, Bratko Kreft, Edvard Kocbek itd. so nam vsem do bro znana.1 Med t. i. »velike sinove« Prlekije gotovo spada - ob vseh različnih svetovnonazor skih ali strankarskopolitičnih pogledih - zgodovinska osebnost duhovnika, novinarja in politika Antona Korošca (1872-1940). II. Juriju ob Ščavnici, da nes Videm ob Ščavnici, kmetu Janezu Korošcu (1835-1910) in njegovi ženi Neži roj. Ploj (1840-1907). Občina Sv. Jurij ob Ščavnici (St. Georgen a. d.
