The Tennessee Meteorite Impact Sites and Changing Perspectives on Impact Cratering
UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN QUEENSLAND THE TENNESSEE METEORITE IMPACT SITES AND CHANGING PERSPECTIVES ON IMPACT CRATERING A dissertation submitted by Janaruth Harling Ford B.A. Cum Laude (Vanderbilt University), M. Astron. (University of Western Sydney) For the award of Doctor of Philosophy 2015 ABSTRACT Terrestrial impact structures offer astronomers and geologists opportunities to study the impact cratering process. Tennessee has four structures of interest. Information gained over the last century and a half concerning these sites is scattered throughout astronomical, geological and other specialized scientific journals, books, and literature, some of which are elusive. Gathering and compiling this widely- spread information into one historical document benefits the scientific community in general. The Wells Creek Structure is a proven impact site, and has been referred to as the ‘syntype’ cryptoexplosion structure for the United State. It was the first impact structure in the United States in which shatter cones were identified and was probably the subject of the first detailed geological report on a cryptoexplosive structure in the United States. The Wells Creek Structure displays bilateral symmetry, and three smaller ‘craters’ lie to the north of the main Wells Creek structure along its axis of symmetry. The question remains as to whether or not these structures have a common origin with the Wells Creek structure. The Flynn Creek Structure, another proven impact site, was first mentioned as a site of disturbance in Safford’s 1869 report on the geology of Tennessee. It has been noted as the terrestrial feature that bears the closest resemblance to a typical lunar crater, even though it is the probable result of a shallow marine impact. -

It is time to let go of these relics that glorify a destructive history, filled with violence and death, as many other cities across America are doing. Keeping the Columbus statue broadcasts a clear message exalting the history of lack of care for humanity of colonists and imperialists. If we want to stand by the ideals of equity and social justice, removing this symbol of inequity and harm from our city. Daniel Galvin Yes Remove The Christopher Columbus statue in Shenley Park should be immediately removed with all expediency - which is why the process of replacement or alternation, and accompanying delays, is unacceptable as well. The fact that it has remained there this long is an embarrassment to Pittsburgh, and an insult to the native people whose land this was for thousands of years. For native people - including friends of mine whose viewpoints I greatly value - this is tantamount to a statue of Hitler in a Jewish neighborhood, or a monument commemorating the cross-Atlantic slave trade being erected in a black neighborhood. -

(Geology & Anthropology), State University of New York at the College of Oneonta, Oneonta, NY, 2012 Advisory Committee: Dr. Carlton Brett (Chair) Dr. Benjamin Dattilo (Member) Dr. Dave Meyer (Member) Dr. Arnold Miller (Member) Dr. Brenda Hunda (Member) ABSTRACT The Upper Ordovician Waynesville Formation of the Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana tri-state region is situated during and between two major paleoecological events:, the Richmondian Invasion, and the End Ordovician Extinction. Because of this juxtaposition, understanding the regional stratigraphy of this interval is vital to interpreting these events. Stratigraphic and paleontological work on this interval dates back to the late 1800s, and, as a result, numerous nomenclature schemes (biostratigraphical, lithostratigraphical, and state-line geology) have been developed to characterize the Waynesville Formation. The variety of schemes has inhibited the ability to make detailed bed-by-bed correlations. This study has attempted to rectify this issue by selecting the best nomenclature scheme, and create bed-by-bed correlations that cross state lines. The results of the study herein demonstrate that correlations are indeed possible from the deepest water facies to the shallowest water facies fairly readily. The study has also resulted in the discovery of a Mid-Richmondian Unconformity which has previously gone undocumented. This unconformity, which separates the Waynesville Formation from the overlying Blanchester Formation, at places cuts through the entirety of the Clarksville Member of the Waynesville. -
