  • Shahid Khan, Illinois
Shahid Khan Illinois ’70 Oxford Cup Roll No. 082 July 27, 2017 | Snowbird, Utah Shahid R. Khan, Illinois ’70, was initiated into the Sigma Rho Chapter on October 12, 1968 as Roll No. 1086. On January 4, 2012, he became the owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars. His dream of owning an NFL team had become reality on December 14, 2011, in a unanimous 32-0 vote by NFL owners in support of his purchase of the franchise. Khan’s passion for the National Football League took root long before his entry into the league. His dream of one day owning an NFL team began while watching games with his fraternity brothers in the basement of the Beta Theta Pi house as a student at the University of Illinois. Through the success of his own business, Flex-N-Gate Corporation, his dream came true 40 years later. Khan’s history with Flex-N-Gate started in 1970, when he worked at the company as an engineering student at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. A naturalized U.S. citizen, Khan came from his native Pakistan in 1967 at the age of 16 to attend college. When he graduated in 1971, he became Flex-N-Gate’s engineering manager. In 1978, Khan left Flex-N-Gate and with $13,000 in savings and a $50,000 loan from the Small Business Loan Corporation, he created the start-up Bumper Works, which revolutionized the industry through an innovative one-piece bumper design that is still considered the industry standard for all seamless steel bumpers worldwide.

They risked their lives and used their camera lenses to tell the world of the brutality and violence associated with the first free elections in post Apartheid South Africa in the early 90s. This intense political period brought out their best work – two won Pulitzers during the period – but cost them a heavy price. Based on the book of the same name by Marinovich and Silva, the film stars Ryan Phillipe, Malin Akerman and Taylor Kitsch and explores the thrill, danger and moral questions associated with exposing the truth. 2 ABOUT THE DIRECTOR Written and directed by Steven Silver, The Bang Bang Club is a Canada/South Africa co-production from producer Daniel Iron of Foundry Films Inc.

Intraparty Organization in the U.S. Congress by Ruth Frances Bloch Rubin Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science University of California, Berkeley Professor Eric Schickler, Chair The purpose of this dissertation is to supply a simple and synthetic theory to help us to understand the development and value of organized intraparty blocs. I will argue that lawmakers rely on these intraparty organizations to resolve several serious collective action and coordination problems that otherwise make it difficult for rank-and-file party members to successfully challenge their congressional leaders for control of policy outcomes. In the empirical chapters of this dissertation, I will show that intraparty organizations empower dissident lawmakers to resolve their collective action and coordination challenges by providing selective incentives to cooperative members, transforming public good policies into excludable accomplishments, and instituting rules and procedures to promote group decision-making.
