Booklet 2, "Chinese New Year," contains background information and classroom activities about that holiday, as well as Korean and Vietnamese New Year's customs. Booklet 3 presents activities and assembly suggestions prepared to assist schools in commemorating January 15, the birthdate of Martin. Luther King, Jr. The information and activities in Booklet 4 focus on the celebration of Afro-American History Month. Booklet 5; "Lei Day," focuses on Hawaiian history, culture, and statehood. Booklet 6 is entitled "Cinco de Mayo," and presents information about the Mexican defeat of French troops in 1862, as well as other Mexican events and cultural activities. Booklet 7 centers around Japan and the Japanese holiday, "Children's Day." The Norwegian celebration "Styyende Mai" (Constitution Day, May 17), is described in Booklet 8, along with other information about and cultural activities from Norway.

    THIRD EYE EDITION Towards the truth (Book Review) Journalists have always been at a unique vantage point. But, with it comes great responsibility. Journalists, by the demands of their profession, have to be impartial witnesses to wars, uprisings, corruption and disasters. There have been innumerable instances of brave journalists being killed while covering conflict in the world’s troubled hotspots. That is why Swedish-Austrian journalist Bertil Lintner’s remarkable book Land of Jade – A Journey from North East India through Northern Burma to China is truly inspirational – not only for the brotherhood of scribes, but the layman as well. For here, Lintner, and his young Burmese wife, Hseng Noung and baby daughter cross the border between North East India’s Nagaland and Burma (Myanmar), secretly infiltrating that unknown, enigmatic country sealed off from the world. It is October 1985 and the couple are undertaking a terrible risk to discover for themselves what lies beyond. Once across the Indian border, Kachin guerillas escort the family through Northern Burma to the Sino Burmese border. This epic journey, full of unexpected dangers, hardships and survival under the most daunting circumstances, helped Lintner write about the ground realities of Burma, the life of the rebels in the Far Eastern Economic Review in 1987 and his book The Rise and Fall of the Communist Party of Burma, published in 1990. When he wrote this present book in 1989 in Danish, there were over 25,000 - 30,000 odd insurgents in Burma. Praising the discipline and fighting skills of the Burmese Army, he hoped that they would be able to channelise this force into a more honourable task than fighting against the country’s own ethnic minorities.

INTERACTIONS BETWEEN MUSIC, INUMMARIIT, AND BELIEF IN AN INUIT COMMUNITY SINCE RESETTLEMENT by ©Mary Elizabeth Piercey-Lewis A thesis submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of Music Memorial University of Newfoundland May 2015 St. John’s Newfoundland Abstract Arviat (previously Eskimo Point) is a small predominantly Inuit hamlet in Nunavut, which in 2006 had 2,060 residents. Like all other native communities in the Canadian north, Arviat has experienced, and is experiencing, tremendous change. The nomadic iglu-dwellers have become sedentary wage workers and/or sophisticated harvesters of Arctic char and other natural resources. In spite of cultural and social change, Inuit feel a strong continuity between their past and present. Many born and raised on the land now occupy key economic, political, managerial, and educational positions within an administrative apparatus that did not even exist fifty-five years ago. Many Inuit accept change as it comes, and make modifications in their lifestyle and cultural habits based on their strong sense of Inuit identity. This strong sense of Inuit identity is based on an Inuit concept called inummariit, which translates as “real Inuit.” Most Inuit live by a belief system based on living like a “true Inuk.” How Inuit conceptualize living the “Inuit way” or inummariit is diverse and complex. Furthermore, inummariit identity is constantly changing. This can be seen in how Inuit have negotiated outside influences such as Christianity, fox trapping, media, technology, and syllabic reading and writing into the same body of Inuit traditional knowledge as hunting caribou, oral tradition, and survival on the land.
