THE CHEKHOV DREAMS A play by John McKinney Copyright © 2014 by John McKinney 67 East 11St. Apt. #708 New York, NY 10003 (212) 598-9970 [email protected] ii CHARACTERS JEREMY Mid-30’s, affable, well-read, reclusive, a wounded soul. KATE Mid-30’s, beautiful, sophisticated, perceptive, deceased. CHRISSY Early 20’s, cute, upbeat, eager, passionate. EDDIE Late 30’s, jaded, decadent, addicted to just about everything. CHEKHOV Mid 40’s, wise, eccentric, crotchety, deceased. SETTING Time: The present. Place: New York City, various locations; A lake, various times and seasons. Author’s notes: This play was written as a dark romantic comedy, accent on the comedy. As such, the default tempo for the play should be brisk and lively, pausing or stopping only as necessary to reflect the deeper, more serious moments. Scene transitions should occur as smoothly as possible with a minimum of set and prop handling to ensure that the story keeps moving apace. In essence the play should avoid the trap of over-indulging in the darker currents of the story and becoming labored or ponderous. As this play explores two alternating states of mind – dreams and reality – it is intended that the design elements establish a distinctive motif for each. For example, there might be a magical, sparkling quality to the lighting to represent the water reflecting off of the lake in the dream scenes, while the real life apartment scenes might have a grittier, more somber feel especially as most of these scenes occur at night. Similarly, the dream scenes might be accompanied by a recurring ethereal theme, or “dreamscape,” which would shift in tone from light and magical to something more ominous, reflecting the main character’s psychological journey.

Bit scary and I would say a number of you may have to go through beginner lessons again and also wear name tags lol. On the 9th of May the national association had their AGM with a number of clubs from throughout New Zealand that were involved. First time ever we had to run the meeting through zoom so talking to 40 odd people from around the country was quite weird but it worked. A number of remits were discussed and voted on with a collection of changes mostly good but a few I didn’t agree with but you all can see it all on the association website if you are interested in looking . Also senior and junior nationals were voted on where they should be hosted and that is also advertised on their website. Juniors next year will be in Porirua and Seniors will be in Wanganui.

With Mor Fleisher-Leach he runs Spacecase Records. Leach’s interviews are available at Bored Out (http://boredout305.tumblr.com/). Razorcake is a bi-monthly, Los Angeles-based fanzine that provides consistent coverage of do-it-yourself punk culture. We believe in positive, progressive, community-friendly DIY punk, and are the only bona fide 501(c)(3) non-profit music magazine in America. We do our part. An Oral History of The Gun Club originally appeared in Razorcake #29, released in December 2005/January 2006. Original artwork and layout by Todd Taylor. Photos by Edward Colver, Gary Leonard and Romi Mori. Cover photo by Edward Colver. Zine design by Marcos Siref. Printing courtesy of Razorcake Press, Razorcake.org he Gun Club is one of Los Angeles’s greatest bands. Lead singer, guitarist, and figurehead Jeffrey Lee Pierce fits in easily with Tthe genius songwriting of Arthur Lee (Love), Chris Hillman (Byrds), and John Doe and Exene (X). Unfortunately, neither he nor his band achieved the notoriety of his fellow luminary Angelinos. From 1979 to 1996, Jeffrey manned the Gun Club ship through thick and mostly thin. Understandably, the initial Fire of Love and Miami lineup of Ward Dotson (guitar), Rob Ritter (bass), Jeffrey Lee Pierce (vocals/ guitar) and Terry Graham (drums) remains the most beloved; setting the spooky, blues-punk template for future Gun Club releases. At the time of its release, Fire of Love was heralded by East Coast critics as one of the best albums of 1981.
