Jack Higgins, real name Harry Patterson, wrote 77 books as of 2016 and is now one of the most famous military fiction authors. It was, however, his 35th book, Eagle Has Landed, that jettisoned him among the best-selling authors. The book has since sold over 50 million copies1 and garnered international praise.2 But how authentic it really is? This is the question that this thesis will attempt to answer. The book is significant for various reasons. Firstly, it is a best-selling book from World War II that features German protagonists. While the German soldiers were portrayed with sympathy in works of fiction before, there hasn’t been a story that attained mainstream popularity told from their perspective. Secondly, the historical setting, which except for a few mistakes, which will be explained later, is written fairly convincingly. The author uses the ‘false document technique’ to add the feel of realism. While the historians or history enthusiasts will point out many inaccuracies, it is convincing enough for the general public to enjoy and get immersed. As the author states in the book: “At least fifty per cent of it is documented historical fact. The reader must decide for himself how much of the rest is a matter of speculation, or fiction…”3 And this is precisely what this thesis will attempt to distinguish. In the first chapter, this thesis will provide a basic historical context, and establish and explain the terms ‘alternate history’ and ‘secret history’, finished with information about the author. The next chapter will open with historical context of the war, as this is one of the cornerstones of the story and the date it takes place is important. And while the description of nature and landscape by the author is incredibly convincing and picturesque, this thesis cannot verify this is any way, therefore it will not be an examined subject. The following chapter will select key moments in the story and examine their historical plausibility based on various sources. With a significant portion of the chapter dedicated to the team of German paratroopers that serve as the main characters, focusing 1 John Crace, “A Life in Writing: Jack Higgins”, The Guardian, July 31, 2010, https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2010/jul/31/jack-higgins-life-harry-patterson. 2 “The Eagle Has Landed,“ GoodReads, accessed April 17, 2019, https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/295961.The_Eagle_Has_Landed. 3 Jack Higgins, The Eagle has Landed (London: Penguin Books Ltd, 2014), 12. 8 mainly on Kurt Steiner, the leader and a German paratrooper, Preston, a disgraced British soldier and a member of the British Free Corps and the only real ‘antagonist’ of the book, and Joanna Grey, a Boer born German spy. The thesis will finish with a summary and a conclusion based on previously stated facts on the plausibility of the novel. 9 1. Literary background This first chapter of the thesis will focus on establishing general information about the author, the book and the genre in which it is written and also providing a definition and description of several genres. 1.1. Historical context The Eagle has Landed was published in 1975 and it is considered by many as a remake of a British film from 1942. Both follow a similar story but the themes and characters are drastically different, while in the wartime movie, the Germans are portrayed very negatively, with passing time this depiction could be eventually altered. In 1942, a Brazilian filmmaker by the name of Alberto Cavalcanti made a movie about a group of German paratroopers infiltrating a British village as a prelude to a full-scale German invasion. The film tried to reflect the fear and paranoia of a possible German

  • Introduction
Title: Daring Missions of World War II Author: William B. Breuer ISBN: 0-471-40419-5 Introduction World war ii, the mightiest endeavor that history has known, was fought in many arenas other than by direct confrontation between opposing forces. One of the most significant of these extra dimensions was a secret war-within-a-war that raged behind enemy lines, a term that refers to actions taken a short dis- tance to the rear of an adversary’s battlefield positions or as far removed as a foe’s capital or major headquarters. Relentlessly, both sides sought to penetrate each other’s domain to dig out intelligence, plant rumors, gain a tactical advantage, spread propaganda, create confusion, or inflict mayhem. Many ingenious techniques were employed to infiltrate an antagonist’s territory, including a platoon of German troops dressed as women refugees and pushing baby carriages filled with weapons to spearhead the invasion of Belgium. Germans also wore Dutch uniforms to invade Holland. The Nazi attack against Poland was preceded by German soldiers dressed as civilians and by others wearing Polish uniforms. In North Africa, British sol- diers masqueraded as Germans to strike at enemy airfields, and both sides dressed as Arabs on occasion. One British officer in Italy disguised himself as an Italian colonel to get inside a major German headquarters and steal vital information. In the Pacific, an American sergeant of Japanese descent put on a Japan- ese officer’s uniform, sneaked behind opposing lines, and brought back thir- teen enemy soldiers who had obeyed his order to lay down their weapons.

  • Fictional Reality and the Portrayal of Justice in Modern Sociology and Contemporary Novels
Free Inquiry In Creative Sociology Volume 34 NO.2 November 2006 133 FICTIONAL REALITY AND THE PORTRAYAL OF JUSTICE IN MODERN SOCIOLOGY AND CONTEMPORARY NOVELS Ralph G. O'Sullivan, Chillicothe, IL ABSTRACT Social justice is a popular subject of discussion in sociology, politics, jurisprudence, as well as popular novels. The outcomes of its proceedings are equally curious because that which is "'just" depends upon such variables as defining the direction that justice needs to take; allocating authority to enforce it; and public reaction to its consequences. This article represents a layered investigative journey into the portrayal of justice in nine popular series novels because its fictional enactment represents the way that the population would like to see it enforced, but does not. Since the body of the material reviewed here are works of fiction which incorporate known data a new expression is offered. Fictional reality refers to the ways in which novelists weave fair knowledge about modern justice into stories which please their audiences, and this article explores the means by which that melding occurs. Sean Dillon has an idea of who it may be, an old nemesis who has clearly gotten tired of their interference in his schemes. Sadly, not recommended. This is my second Jack Higgins book this month. He first appeared in Eye of the Storm , and a new Sean Dillon novel has hit bookstore shelves almost every year since. He doesn't learn anything conclusive, but his visit does ruffle the feathers of some old IRA supporters who still believe Dillon turned on them. Published January 10th by Brilliance Audio first published Deep Fire Rising. There are four or five reoccurring members of this elite force run by a retired General of the British Military, who happens to run this ultra secret group. Kind of a standardized plot with OK characters. I have read his efforts since I was a young reader at which point the content was probably inappropriate for me. We have an amazing shot by Dillon, at dawn, in a pouring rain, off-balance, and at some distance in misty marshes, as he wounds Shamrock, but even that is contrived. Error rating book. I've followed Dillon from his days as an IRA villain to his current role as wry anti-hero Just a moment while we sign you in to your Goodreads account. Along the way, we hear a lot about the Troubles and their aftermath in Ireland, yet see little of the consequences of that often brutal and tragic period in Irish history.

WOMEN IN MODERN EUROPEAN HISTORY Syllabus – Spring 2018 Instructor: Prof. Karen Hagemann TIME OF THE COURSE: TUESDAY & THURSDAY: 11:00 AM - 12:15 PM ROOM: TBA Office Hours: Tuesday: 1:00 - 3:00 PM or by appointment Office: Hamilton Hall 562 Email: [email protected] 17 October 2017 HISTORY / WMST 259: Spring 2018 2 AIMS OF THE COURSE In this course we will study women's lives, work and the history of the women’s movement in modern Europe from the era of the late Enlightenment and the French Revolution to the period of the two World Wars, the Holocaust, and the Cold War. We will explore how the major political, economic, social, and cultural changes affected the lives of women from different social backgrounds and how they responded to these changes. The struggle of the women’s movement that emerged everywhere in Europe during the nineteenth century to improve the working and living conditions of women, achieve eQual civil and political rights for women and increase their social, cultural, and political influence, will thus be one central theme. We will ask how the aims and forms of this struggle for female emancipation varied between different groups and countries and changed over time. We also will examine the ways in which women were involved in wars and revolutions and experienced them. The course is organized chronologically, but as we move through time we will concentrate on the following themes: • Gender images and dominant ideas about the gender order and how they affected women’s lives • Women’s role(s) and experiences in the household, the family, and the workforce • Women’s and men’s role(s) in the ‘public spheres’ of nation, state and civil society • Women’s struggle for eQual rights in the family, society, the workforce and politics.
