Early the next morning Anna appears with bloody hands and tells Alphonsus that Frederic is innocent and compels Alphonsus to leave the castle, Frederic, and her, behind and never return. The Midnight Bell kept hoping for more of a plot that would tie the disjointed parts together. Point of Impact. At one point I'm having an issue trying to remember what side they are on. With this new information, Jacques and Count Byroff, resolve to question Alphonsus about the reasons for his distress. The story line is valid but the execution left me wanting. Sean Dillon has an idea of who it may be, an old nemesis who has clearly gotten tired of their interference in his schemes. Sadly, not recommended. This is my second Jack Higgins book this month. He first appeared in Eye of the Storm , and a new Sean Dillon novel has hit bookstore shelves almost every year since. He doesn't learn anything conclusive, but his visit does ruffle the feathers of some old IRA supporters who still believe Dillon turned on them. Published January 10th by Brilliance Audio first published Deep Fire Rising. There are four or five reoccurring members of this elite force run by a retired General of the British Military, who happens to run this ultra secret group. Kind of a standardized plot with OK characters. I have read his efforts since I was a young reader at which point the content was probably inappropriate for me. We have an amazing shot by Dillon, at dawn, in a pouring rain, off-balance, and at some distance in misty marshes, as he wounds Shamrock, but even that is contrived. Error rating book. I've followed Dillon from his days as an IRA villain to his current role as wry anti-hero Just a moment while we sign you in to your Goodreads account. Along the way, we hear a lot about the Troubles and their aftermath in Ireland, yet see little of the consequences of that often brutal and tragic period in Irish history.

  • Diachronic Transformations in Troubles Fiction: a Study in Models and Methods
    DIACHRONIC TRANSFORMATIONS IN TROUBLES FICTION: A STUDY IN MODELS AND METHODS. Pauline Rafferty, M.A.(Hons), M.Sc. Thesis submitted to the University of Nottingham for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy January 2008 1 Abstract This dissertation examines relationships between Northern Irish Troubles fiction and its secondary critical literature. Producers of genre are viewed as consumers of the genre to which they contribute and the consumption of genre is seen as a pre-requisite of production. The research method is designed to examine genre systematically through the analysis of a large data set representative of the genre spectrum. It employs analytical concepts drawn from semiotics, specifically, paradigms and syntagms. Results are interpreted using Raymond Williams’ “structures of feeling” and a modified version of Stuart Hall’s encoding/decoding model. The review of the secondary literature of Troubles fiction reveals two interpretative models. The first sees Troubles fiction as a static site of cultural production in which a narrow range of negative or false stereotypes is endlessly reproduced. The second sees Troubles fiction as a site of cultural production that has experienced a form of cultural rupture as a younger generation of writer critiques and re-interprets conventional representations. Analysis reveals that neither interpretative model emerging from the secondary critical literature fully describes Troubles fiction. Conventional critical approaches to Troubles fiction based on intuitive and impressionistic ways of seeking knowledge miss minute shifts in the genre’s history. In particular, critical studies miss the return to relatively conservative thriller codes and conventions in novels published in the early 1990s during the peace talks.
