IBEW 1985 Labor Museum Building Dedication As a tribute to the Hoover Company’s International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union (IBEW) Local 1985, Walsh University formally dedicated the new IBEW 1985 Labor Museum and MakerSpace with a ceremony and reception on Thursday, December 6. Throughout its history, Local 1985 represented the Hoover Company’s workforce including electricians, maintenance workers, mechanics, assembly line workers and truck drivers. At its peak in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the union represented more than 3,000 members at multiple locations throughout Stark County. IBEW Local 1985 donated its longtime union headquarters to Walsh University in 2016. Originally planned as an exhibit to honor that legacy through memorabilia and artifacts, Walsh took the initial concept and added in an interactive children’s makerspace in an effort to teach how labor practices from the past, such as the assembly line and electrical know-how, can be applied to current technology. Interactive exhibits help children investigate the importance of union speeches, manufacturing assembly lines, electrical know-how and the ways in which technology has impacted the industry through innovations such as 3D printers. Ideal for student field trips, afterschool programs or club outings, museum access is available by reservation to Andrea Singarella, at [email protected] or 330-490-7567. Prior to her role as Interim Dean of the Byers School of Nursing, she served as the Director of Graduate Nursing Programs and Associate Professor of Nursing. In addition to her extensive academic and professional achievements, Dr. Kreye is a veteran of multiple Walsh Global Learning trips and led the University's first nursing programs to Tanzania and Haiti to explore the state of healthcare and nursing education abroad. Dr. Kreye was also instrumental in securing the HRSA Advanced Nursing Education Federal Grant for $600,000 that was awarded to Walsh University in 2015. Walsh Times WINTER 2019 ❘ 18 2017 – 2018 HONOR ROLL OF DONORS

New Year Sparks Renewed Commitment As we embark on the New Year, I can’t help but look back and reflect with gratitude on the great strides we’ve made at Walsh University over the past several months. It’s hard to believe that a year has already passed since we successfully concluded the We Believe Campaign. In that time, we celebrated the opening of the Marlene and Joe Toot Global Learning Center, the Consecration of the St. Teresa of Calcutta Chapel, opened the IBEW Labor Museum in North Canton, added 91 new scholarships and launched new academic programs among other accomplishments. All with the support of our generous donors and collaboration of the Walsh University community. The impetus behind all of our hard work has always been our students. With every endeavor, our focus remains on ensuring that all students, regardless of financial conditions, have access to the high-quality, values-based education at Walsh University. One of the best ways we can assist students on their journey is through scholarship support and a direct gift to the Walsh Fund. Time and again when I speak to our students, they convey to me that if it were not for their scholarship, they would not be able to complete their degree. With 98 percent of our students relying on some form of financial aid, we will continue to focus our efforts on ensuring that a Walsh University education is attainable for all who seek one. While the need for student scholarships will most likely never diminish, we continue to pursue new endeavors that enhance the Walsh University experience, extend our Catholic faith and ensure the legacy of our founding mission. These include the establishment of endowed chairs in each academic school, campus beautification projects, new technology, expanded research facilities and academic programming that is relevant and timely to industry needs. Planning is already underway for this April’s Day of Giving campaign and several new initiatives that will impact almost every facet of the University. We continue to move forward propelled by the blessing of support from our Walsh community, the alumni, Board of Directors, faculty, staff, students, and friends. On behalf of Walsh University, I wish you all a successful and prosperous 2019. ThankEric Belden, Vice President, Advancement You 19 ❘ Walsh Times WINTER 2019 HERITAGE SOCIETY

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Walsh University is guided by a Board of Directors made up of dedicated individuals with unique leadership experience from various backgrounds in education, business, politics and service organizations. Walsh’s Board Members represent a diverse mix that includes the Brothers of Christian Instruction, the Bishop of the Diocese of Youngstown, business leaders, financial experts, religious clergy, judges, attorneys, community partners, education professionals and alumni. As a unified Board, members combine their expertise to review the activities of the University while carefully balancing future development with the Brothers’ founding vision. As committed custodians of Walsh’s mission, it is the Board’s responsibility to oversee the strategic direction of the University, define administrative roles, monitor committees and approve annual accounts and budgets. But most importantly, it is the Board’s duty to preserve and promote Walsh’s Catholic Heritage and founding traditions that have made our University the choice of more than 22,000 students for nearly 60 years.
