Abstract Bertram Lippincott O'Neill (1919-2000) was a Philadelphia businessman who conducted, and engaged others to conduct, genealogical research on his family. He researched the Lippincott, O'Neill, and related families. The formal culmination of his work on the Lippincott side was the publication of a book, Descendants of Joshua Ballinger Lippincott of Burlington County, New Jersey and Josephine Craige His Wife of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: A Line Chart 1813-1992.

The collection consists of original and copies of vital records of family members; research notes; O'Neill's correspondence with family members and the various professional genealogists he engaged; photographs of family members, places, and items of importance to the family; a videotape of a family reunion; publications, including Bertram's book; miscellaneous records; and one artifact, a school medal awarded to Bertram's grandfather, William C. O'Neill.

Background note Bertram Lippincott O'Neill was born September 22, 1919 in Rydal, Pennsylvania to William Paul O'Neill and Marianna Lippincott. He attended William Penn Charter School, St. George's School and Princeton University (Class of 1942). O'Neill served in the 82nd Airborne Division of the U.S. Army in World War II. He saw action in Europe and attained the rank of Captain. He was recalled to active duty during the Korean War, and served in the Central Intelligence Agency. He was a partner in the family insurance business, W. C. O'Neill & Sons, founded by his grandfather, and he later owned a retail store. O'Neill served on the boards of The Historical Society of Pennsylvania, the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and the U.S. Court Tennis Association.

O'Neill's interest in genealogy seems to have grown out of correspondence with his cousin Elmer Wesley O'Neill Jr. On April 10, 1967, Bertram wrote, "Dear Wes: Thanks for your kind letter, which has started me off on an orgy of genealogical research on our parents and grandparents." Bertram's research in the 1960s and early 1970s focused on the O'Neill family. His paternal grandfather, William Charles O'Neill, came to

Bertram Lippincott O'Neill Papers Collection 3011 Philadelphia from Ireland in 1866 at age eighteen. Bertram engaged professional researchers in both the U.S. and Ireland. His Lippincott family research appears to have begun in the later 1970s. Correspondence with Mrs. R. E. (Joan) Scott, O'Neill's principal researcher of the Lippincott family's English origins (Scott also researched the O'Neill side), dates from the mid-1980s, although earlier correspondence (not in the collection) is referenced.

Early versions of the Lippincott name were traced back to between 1170 and 1186 in Luffincott, in Devonshire, near the boundary with Cornwall, in England. The first Lippincott ancestor in America was Richard Lippincott, who emigrated from Devonshire to the Massachusetts Bay Colony about 1639. Richard returned to England in the 1650s following religious controversies with the Puritans, and became a member of the Society of Friends. He came again to America, in the 1660s, settling first in Rhode Island, and eventually (probably in 1665), in Shrewsbury, New Jersey.

Bertram's personal efforts concentrated on the Lippincott family since the birth, in 1813, of Joshua Ballinger Lippincott, founder of the publishing firm J.B. Lippincott Company. Bertram documented the following seven generations of Lippincotts in a 1992 book, in which he appealed to family members to contribute additional family material to him, or to his cousin, Bertram Lippincott III. There are notes from telephone conversations and correspondence subsequent to 1992 that record later births, deaths, marriages, and other significant events. O'Neill maintained an index card file with information about the family members documented in his book. Some cards were updated as late as 1999. Bertram Lippincott O'Neill died July 9, 2000, in Philadelphia.

Scope & content This collection consists primarily of Bertram Lippincott O'Neill's genealogical research. Included are vital records and correspondence with family members and professional genealogists engaged by O'Neill to do research on his family. The correspondence from these genealogists, as well as the many family trees in this collection, provide information on a large number of Lippincott, O'Neill, and related family members.

The Ancestral Record, a volume of genealogical charts completed specifically for Bertram by Grahame Smallwood, traces O'Neill's ancestors to Henry III, King Of England, crusaders, and several sureties of Magna Charta. The Ancestral Record also notes several Mayflower passengers. Bertram's application to the National Society Americans of Royal Descent traces his ancestry back to Alfred the Great in the 9th Century. Most of the early family history in this collection, however, dates back to the 1600s for the Lippincotts, and the 1800s for the O'Neills.

The letters from genealogists were often "status reports" which covered the progress in several different avenues of research. At times, correspondence provided extensive information about family history. At other times, the information was mostly about the sources the researcher had checked and plans for next steps. In addition, researchers did not have exclusive assignments, so various researchers provided Bertram with information about the same relative(s). Bertram Lippincott O'Neill Papers Collection 3011 personal information as well, particularly the letters from Joan Scott, Basil O'Connell, Michael Leader, and others whom Bertram personally met and befriended during his research.

The correspondence provides the richest source of information on Bertram's family history. However, there may be gaps in the record. For example, the earliest letter from Joan Scott is dated January 1984. However, in her Preface to The O'Neills of Philadelphia she notes beginning research for Bertram in 1978. Correspondence also includes copies of letters written by Bertram. This provides a sense of Bertram as a person, and how he directed and supported the researchers he employed. Miscellaneous folders document some of Bertram's other interests.

This collection also provides insight into the process of publishing a genealogical study, as Bertram did with Descendants of Joshua Ballinger Lippincott of Burlington, New Jersey and Josephine Craige his Wife of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: A Line Chart 1813-1992. Working papers, correspondence with the publisher and family members who reviewed the preliminary drafts, and the final version of the book are included.

Photographs are also an important part of the collection. The collection includes photographs of family members, reunions, places in Ireland and England where Bertram's ancestors lived, and grave sites. Most of the photographs are identified.

Series 1. Family Records, 1174-1998 (Boxes 1-4) This series contains copies of vital records, including birth, marriage, and death certificates for family members. Also included are copies and transcripts of wills, census schedules, family trees, and notes. Many of the notes are Bertram's handwritten documentation of information he gathered during telephone conversations. Bertram Lippincott O'Neill Papers Collection 3011 Ballinger, Coane, Conolly, Dickson, Eccles, Eves, Fisher, Gore, Lea, Lippincott, Major, Mathieson, McCue, Newbold, O'Neill, Pott, Robinson, Selous, Slutter, Stewart, Wall, Wharton, Wills, and Wray. Folders exist for individual family members when specific documentation for that individual is in the collection. Typically, one folder for each family contains a family tree(s) and miscellaneous notes. The arrangement is alphabetical by family name. A number of family trees are oversize and are stored separately, as noted in the box and folder listing. The dates indicated for records in this series relate to the people or events that are documented, rather than the dates of creation. Date ranges reflect the earliest and latest dates present in the records.

Series 2. Correspondence, 1967-1997 (Boxes 5-8) The Correspondence Series includes letters to and from genealogical researchers, family members, and others. The correspondence from genealogists is the largest segment. Letters from Joan Scott, in particular, and others, provide more details about the Lippincott and O'Neill ancestors than the vital records, offer insight into sources of information, and reflect the emotions associated with genealogical research. There are also copies of many of Bertram's letters, which are filed with the letters from each correspondent. In addition, this series includes Bertram's applications to various societies, including the Colonial Society of Pennsylvania and the Society of the Sons of St. George. This series is arranged alphabetically by name of the correspondent. Two folders contain miscellaneous correspondence, one for family-related letters, the other non-family related. Dates used in this series are the dates of the correspondence.

Series 3. Publications, 1991-2000 (Box 8) This series relates to Bertram Lippincott O'Neill's book, Descendants of Joshua Ballinger Lippincott of Burlington, New Jersey and Josephine Craige His Wife of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: A Line Chart 1813-1992. There are working papers, documentation of the printing costs for the book, as well as related correspondence. Much of the correspondence is from family members thanking and congratulating Bertram for his work, and at times requesting additional copies. The small number of working papers, however, suggests that this series is an incomplete record.

Series 4. Genealogy, 1883-1998 (Box 8) The Genealogy Series includes sources, and in some cases, examples from those sources, of genealogical information. This information covers general genealogical methodology, and not Lippincott, O'Neill, or related family information as in Series 1 and Series 2. Some of the information in this series is published material on the early settlement of Monmouth County, New Jersey. One folder includes information Bertram had labeled "Genealogical Data (Books, People, Places)." Another folder includes examples of Secretary Hand alphabets, helpful for reading old documents.

Series 5. Miscellaneous, 1969-1994 (Boxes 8-10) a. Papers

It also provides some information on his service on the boards of both The Historical Society of Pennsylvania and the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania. There are also folders with information on family businesses, J.B. Lippincott Company and W.C. O'Neill & Sons.

b. Videotape A VHS videotape of the July 1983 Reunion of the grandchildren of Joshua Bertram Lippincott (1857-1940) is included in this collection. This event is also referred to in some correspondence as the "17 Cousins Reunion." A commemorative poem by Joanna Biddle Johnson, one of the seventeen cousins, is stored with the videotape.

c. Artifact There is one artifact. It is a medal presented in 1863 by St. Peter's Presbyterian Church Schools of Liverpool to William Charles O'Neill for good conduct and general proficiency.

Series 6. Photographs, 1916-1997 (Box 11) This series includes two hundred and ninety-four photographs organized and stored in forty photo storage pages. There are photographs of family members, family homes, family-related places in Ireland and England, and family reunions, a commemorative sword once owned by the family, and documents showing family names and signatures. Most photographs are identified and captioned in the box and folder listing. There are both black and white and color photographs, and various sizes. In many cases, negatives of the photographs are included in the collection, and the existence of a negative is noted in the box and folder listing. The first thirty-four pages relate primarily to the O'Neill side of the family. Most of the remaining storage pages relate to the Lippincott side. One 11x14 inch photograph relating to a 1969 court tennis match is stored in box 12.
