Letter from the Vicarage

We live in a society where people might say: Christianity is good for you – but it isn’t for me. They try all sorts of religions and all sorts of self-help systems. But, if Jesus gets hold of your life – and you allow him, JESUS is BETTER.

Charles Colson, Director of Prison Fellowship and former Counsel to the President of the United States, Richard Nixon, who himself went to prison as a result of the Watergate affair, wrote this about one Brazilian prison.

“Humaita Prison in Brazil is a remarkable place. Almost twenty years ago, it was a rotting building where prisoners were tortured. Then three Christian men went to the government and got permission to take over the prison. They started to run Humaita as a Christian prison.

Inmates open the doors; they have the keys. Security as we understand it is totally compromised. We asked inmates why they stayed when they could just walk away. One inmate expressed the reason for his presence eloquently: “When I walked into this prison, they took off handcuffs of steel and replaced them with handcuffs of love.” They assign people to a buddy system. Each new inmate is assigned to an elder who loves the Lord. At every single meal, they stand before the meal and recite the Lord’s Prayer in Portuguese.

If anyone ever asks whether Christ makes a difference, send them down to San Jose des Campos in Brazil to the Humaita

3

Prison. For all those years, while the government of Brazil has had a 74 percent reoffending rate, Humaita has released more than three hundred inmates, and they have had only twelve come back. That’s 4 percent reoffending rate.

One inmate showed me Humaita’s secret. This inmate was convicted for murder, but he was my guide through the prison, walking around with all the prison keys hanging from his belt. He asked whether I’d like to see the maximum-security cell. So we walked down a long hall of steel doors toward the cell in question. He said it used to be the punishment cell where they tortured people. “We still use it for punishment,” he said. “We have one inmate in there.” He took me to the door and looked through the little peek hole. “Are you sure you want to go in there?” he asked. “I have been in maximum security holes all over the world,” I told him. I wanted to see. He said, “Okay,” and then unlocked the door. As he swung the door open, I looked in and saw a couple of chairs and a dim light and flowers on a table. I walked through the door. To the right I saw a crucifix–Christ hanging on the cross. My guide pointed to the image of Christ and said, “This is the prisoner who is taking the punishment for us.”

A sign on the wall above the crucifix said, “We are together” in Portuguese. They understand that they are joined with Christ, who suffered.

The key to this success is not rules and regulations but a relationship with Jesus Christ. It is this very same Jesus, whose birth we look forward to celebrating at Christmas, who can make the difference to you, if you allow him to.

The Rainbow

When I awoke this morning, it was dull and grey again

And I thought, when looking at the sky

“I’m sure that it will rain”

And sure enough, before too long upon the window pane

I heard the gentle patter of _yes – you guessed it- rain!

But suddenly I realised there was a patch of blue

The clouds were slowly drifting

And the sun came peeping through.

As the sunbeams glistened through the raindrops

From on High 5

There appeared a glorious rainbow

Stretching right across the sky

And as I gazed in wonder, at this awesome, coloured bow

It reminded me of something that I’d like you all to know

Even when the rainbow is no longer there to see

The memory reminds us that, wherever we may be

God’s promises are true, and always will be – till the end

When at last we go to be with Him

Our Saviour and our Friend

But, I had had to turn my back upon the golden sun

To see the glorious colours in this great phenomenon

So, don’t let us be discouraged if our way

Seems dark and drear

Let’s look the other way and soon

A rainbow will appear!

Tilney All Saints Church News

As I write this it’s just after Remembrance Sunday. This year it was Tilney All Saints’ turn to host the united service, which is shared between Terrington St John, Tilney St Lawrence and Tilney All Saints. I was so glad that so many turned out to remember all those men and women who made such sacrifices for us all and those who continue to do so today. The church was full and it was good to see a fair few youngsters there too (they all behaved impeccably).

Something in the region of £200 was raised to support the work of the British Legion. This service always seems a little bitter sweet to me. There is the thankfulness that we continue to live in a free society and are able to take democracy for granted, but there’s also the sadness that so many lives were lost and so many lives overwhelmed by catastrophic injuries, both mental and physical. We must never forget the appalling tragedy of warfare. May God send us leaders with wisdom and conviction who will lead us forward to build a society where everyone is valued, where the weak are cared for, where none are overlooked; a strong society

7 that will weather life’s ups and downs with a confidence that can look to the future with hopefulness.

As we approach the Advent season, Christian people are filled with hope as we look forward to remembering the birth of Christ. Jesus came into the world as a tiny baby to help us to understand that God’s world is filled with hope. Through good times and bad, God is with us. He will help us to deal with the bad times and rejoice with us in the good times. Every time we see an image representing the infant Jesus, we can be filled with hope because God never gives up on us and we certainly shouldn’t give up on ourselves. What life goals we set ourselves will depend very much on our individual circumstances and how much effort we’re prepared to put in but I believe that everyone has some special gift that makes them unique. If only we were generous enough to recognise the gifts of others and to encourage one another to value them.

I can’t believe how quickly the days are rushing by. I feel as if I’m running to stand still because at this time of the year there’s so much to do. However busy you all are, I hope you will find time to remember that Christmas isn’t just a time for parties and self-indulgence but a celebration of the birth of Jesus. Of course we don’t know the date of Jesus’ birthday (people were a bit vague about dates of birth in those days,) but it is right to remember it and mid-winter is as good a time as any to do so. We shouldn’t ignore God’s greatest gift to humanity. Please consider joining in some of the Christmas Services.

8

The Christmas Carol Service on 15.12.19 at 2.30pm, is a traditional service of nine carols and lessons. We sing the well-known favourites and listen to the Christmas story unfold. Afterwards there are delicious refreshments and scrumptious mulled wine (as well as tea & coffee). An excellent beginning to the Christmas season!

The Christmas Services are shared between the three parishes of Tilney St Lawrence, Terrington St John and Tilney All Saints. This year it’s the turn of Tilney All Saints to have the Christmas Eve Midnight Mass. 24.12.19 at 11.30pm. As with all services, everyone is warmly welcome to this very lovely service which gently ushers in this special day.

Mid-week service: Every Wednesday morning at 9.30am, I perform a mid-week service of Holy Communion in the Lady Chapel of Tilney All Saints Church. It’s a wonderful opportunity to take some time away from the demands of day to day life and draw closer to God in this gentle service of thankfulness. Please consider coming if you are able to. Occasionally I can’t be there so if you’ve ever turned up & I’m not there, I do apologise. There are large red books of ‘Daily Prayer’ in the Lady Chapel so you can always use these if I’m unable to be there.

Wiggenhall St. Germans Church News

Remembrance Day dawned and it was a beautiful morning. The Church was full and at just before eleven we all progressed to the War memorial. Bill Kerr read out all of those names of loved ones long gone and was followed by the laying of wreaths. Alan played superbly the The Last Post and the Reveille and we were all moved by this momentous moment in the village. Afterwards refreshments and getting together proved most welcome. Thank you to our organist, readers, refreshment ladies and all who made this service special. Thank you Carolyn x

From October we have been incorporating ‘Godly Play’ into our Family Café Services on the third Sunday of the month. This is a time for younger children to enjoy interactive Bible stories using figures and models. We would be pleased to 15 welcome more children and their parents to this, and any service. The morning begins with a breakfast at 9.30 a.m. with the service beginning at 10 a.m. Due to the extra church services being held in the lead up to Christmas, ‘Godly Play’ in December will be incorporated into the Crib Service at 4 p.m. on Christmas Eve, rather than on the third Sunday of the month.

In the Christian Calendar the first Sunday of Advent falls on 1st December this year. Advent means ‘coming’ and is a time of expectation and preparation, as the church prepares to celebrate the ‘coming’ of Jesus Christ at his birth, and also looks ahead to his final Advent, or coming, as judge at the end of time. The church has some special services in the lead up to the Christmas to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, beginning with ‘Carols by Candlelight on Monday 16th December at 6.30 p.m. at Wiggenhall St. Mary the Virgin Church. Dr. Hannah Cleugh will be preaching, please remember to wrap up warm and bring a torch if you need one as the only electricity in the church supplies the organ. Mince pies and mulled wine will be served after the service.

There will also be a Village Carol Service at St. Germans Church on Sunday 22nd December at 9.30 a.m. with Fr. Brian Redgers.

On Christmas Eve there will be a Candlelit Crib Service for all ages at 4 p.m. with Godly Play for the children. At 11.30 p.m. on Christmas Eve there will be a service of Holy Communion which will lead us into Christmas morning.

16

On Christmas Day at 10 a.m. there will be a service of Holy Communion at Wiggenhall St. Mary Magdalen Church and a Family Service with Carols at Tilney St. Lawrence Church.

You are always very welcome to all church services but, even if you are not able to come very often, why not come along and join in the celebrations this Christmas?

On behalf of the members of St. Germans Church, we would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Happy Christmas and New Year.

Angie and Carolyn

So many jobs, all done quickly and quietly year long. THANK YOU, you make up such a wonderful part of our dedicated Team. Love to you all from Mark, Angie and Carolyn xxx

FENLAND FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY

Our November meeting was the last of the year – we do not have a meeting in December.

It was an enjoyable social meeting with buffet and drinks, and a lot of member participation. There was a quiz and competition plus swapping stories of research adventures. We looked at forenames we have found, and nicknames that lead us astray. How many different names arise out of Elizabeth, and why did Ann become Nancy and Margaret become Peggy. How many females names were originally male names like Shirley and Evelyn. It was a great evening enjoyed by all who attended.

EVENTS. We will be celebrating Christmas with family history Christmas trees at various venues where our trees will be decorated as family trees. Do look out for them at Peckover House, St Augustine Church Wisbech and St Clements Church Outwell where there will also be a stand decorated with handcrafted decorations with a display of the history of Christmas through the ages.

WALPOLE ART & CRAFT CLUB

WALPOLE ART & CRAFT CLUB - A £1,000 donation to MAGPAS.

A representative from MAGPAS recently attend the meeting of the Walpole Art & Craft Club. The Crafty Ladies were delighted to present him with a cheque of £1,000 money raised by them for charity. Paul thanked the ladies and explained a little about MAGPAS standing for Mid Anglia G.P Ambulance Service it was established in 1971 by two GP’s it was then a road service in fully equipped cars to take a qualified doctor to an accident. About 100 GP’s enlisted, giving their time for free. By 1997 they were able to go by the police helicopter making getting to the accident much quicker. In 2013 they managed to rent their own small helicopter, to use during daylight hours only, plus two fully equipped cars. The small helicopter limited the number it could carry. By 2019 with the help of donations like ours they have now upgraded to a larger helicopter, which travels much faster enabling them to give hospital care at the scene of an accident with better medical treatment and saving more lives. The doctors are now specially trained. They attend approx 5 accidents a day and are supported by a team of volunteers. MAGPAS needs approx 5million a year to keep running. Paul thanked the Crafty Ladies the money could go toward supplying several of the medical kits needed by MAGPAS.
