EMB Benefice Council

The Benefice Council came into effect on 4th March 2011 and co- ordinates all activities regarding Mission and Ministry for the Benefice. It is made up of the Clergy, the Readers, Churchwardens and Treasurers of the parishes and up to two co-opted members. 2

Letter from the Vicarage

The story is told of an American hillbilly from a remote mountain village who had the opportunity to visit a large modern city for the first time.

He could not bring much home with him and he had very little money. He was amazed at the electric lights which he saw everywhere. So he bought a sack full of electric lights bulbs and sockets with switches so he could turn the lights on and off when he got home.

Arriving home, he hung the light bulbs in front of his house and on his and his neighbour's trees. Everyone watched him with curiosity and asked him what he was doing, but he just smiled and said, "Just wait until dark--you'll see."

When night came, he turned on the switches, but nothing happened.

No one had told him about electricity. He did not know the light bulbs were useless unless connected to the source of their power.

Jesus said to his Church, “You are the light of the World.”

Yet so often we are like that hillbilly. We have the light bulbs, the connecting wire and switches but forget that we need to be connected to the source that will drive, “our light” – the Holy Spirit.

Pentecost, (9th June 2019 - also know as Whitsun), is the time when the Church celebrates the first time it was 3 connected up to the Holy Spirit grid. We will read in Acts 2 that on the day of Pentecost, 50 days after Jesus’ death to Passover, God gave his Church the wonderful gift of his Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit was going to be the transformer that ran their lives – and he still does today – if we will let him.

The Holy Spirit transformed the Early Church from being cowed and fearful crew to a community full of boldness and power that enabled them within the space of 300 years to turn the known world upside down and displace the Roman State religion of emperor worship and Paganism.

How did this come about? I think the Emperor Napoleon hit the nail on the head when he said:

“Alexander, Caesar, Charlemagne and I myself have founded great empires, but upon what did these creations of our genius depend? Upon force. Jesus alone founded His empire upon love, and to this very day millions will die for Him. . . .”

Jesus showed his love for us by dying on a Cross to redeem the world and we are called to share this good news with the world around us.

We are called to reflect the light of Christ, the Light of the World – to those around us.

It was that reflected light that shone in the Jerusalem community so brightly that they were held with awe and high esteem – so much so that those who weren’t fully committed to Christ did not dare to join them. (Acts 5:12 et seq).

4

They put themselves out to win folk for Jesus – even to the point of martyrdom.

The Holy Spirit was not just given the upfront leaders – the Apostles - but also to the ordinary believer. For example, we read of the Evangelist Philip’s four daughters being prophetesses (Acts 21:9). We read of the unknown disciple, Ananias being spoken to by God, in a vision, being asked to lay hands on Saul (following Saul’s Damascus Road experience - Acts 9:10 et seq). Ananias obeyed, even though he was putting his life at risk because Saul, (later the apostle Paul) had been killing Christians.

The Early Church too had to wrestle with change. Theirs was a complete mindset change – they had to unlearn their Jewish theology! You can read of their agonising in Acts 15. It wasn’t a case of some of the small changes that we are being called to go though - there was a theological seismic shift. The big question was “Could Gentiles become Christians without going through the Jewish initiation rite of circumcision, since for the Jews circumcision was the sign of their commitment to God and his Covenant?” I am sure there was much prayer and debate. But they came through the other side and were stronger for it.

If we are going to continue to be a light in our communities, we must set aside our personal preferences and wants and be prepared to put ourselves out for the Gospel.

We need to listen to the call of the Holy Spirit to be selfless. We must address the needs of those on the fringes of our churches. And I believe we are starting to do this.

5

’Sunday Times’ journalist Matthew Parris, a man who, by his own confession, is not a Christian, once wrote this -

’The New Testament offers a picture of God, who does not sound at all vague. He has sent His Son to Earth. He has distinct plans for each of us personally and can communicate directly with us. We are capable of forming a direct relationship, individually with Him, and are commanded to try.

We are told that this can be done only through his son. And we are offered the prospect of eternal life – an afterlife in happy, blissful or glorious circumstances if we live this life in a certain manner.

Friends, if I believed that, or even a tenth of that, how could I care which version of the prayer book is used.

I would drop my job, sell my house, throw away all my possessions, leave my acquaintances and set out into the world burning with desire to know more and, when I had found more, to act upon it and tell others.

Far from being puzzled that the Mormons and Adventists should knock on the door, I am unable to understand how anyone who believed that (which) is written in the Bible could choose to spend their waking hours in any other endeavour.’

If a non-Christian can say this to us – then perhaps have we, as the Church in , lost the art of listening to the voice of the Holy Spirit whispering in our ear?

Tilney All Saints Church News

It’s a beautiful, sunny day today as I write, although the wind is bitterly cold. The Annual Parish Meeting and The Annual Vestry Meeting were held this morning, and we were surprised to find inside the church warmer than the outside. This doesn’t happen often. Some of us arrived at 9.30am for Holy Communion, others followed at 10.15am for the meetings.

Annual Meetings are notoriously dull but this year was different because we are hopeful for the future. We have prayed for a long time that the gift of the Holy Spirit will come and work among us. This year there is clear evidence of the Spirit at work.

As we looked back over the year, we were able to recognise how much has changed. The number of people attending services has steadily grown. We’re still small by city standards but not at all bad for a small rural village. More impressive than numbers though is the beautiful feeling of trust and affection that has grown between us all. We’re all so very different in personality, background and outlook, yet we have developed firm bonds of 9 friendship and mutual respect. I hope that others will want to come and join us, there is always a warm welcome for both ‘newcomers’ and the ‘old-comers’ who may have drifted away but want to try the Church again.

Last month we remembered the sadness of Good Friday, then celebrated Easter Day, when Jesus came to reveal himself to his friends on the third day (Sunday), lifting the veil between earth and heaven, showing us that there is no need for us to be fearful or despondent. The Easter Season lasts for fifty days until Pentecost (also known as Whitsunday) so this joyful festivity isn’t over yet!

At our Annual Parish Meeting on 10th April, we realised that we had much to be grateful for. Our small congregation has been quietly growing, almost unnoticed. People have found their way to us and for this we thank God since it has very little to do with our efforts. Somehow the Spirit leads them to us. We just hope that we are worthy to help them feel welcome and that the Holy Spirit will continue to work around us and through us.

We normally meet at 11am each week, except for the second Sunday of the month which is a 10am united service circulating round the four churches. We are considering moving our service time forward a little so that Sunday Lunch isn’t such a rush. If anyone wants to comment, please get in touch.

Mid-week service: Every Wednesday morning at 9.30am, I perform a mid-week service of Holy Communion in the Lady Chapel of Tilney All Saints Church. MOTHERING SUNDAY

A traditional service was held at the Parish Church for Mothering Sunday. It was wonderful to hear the organ to accompany the hymns. Thank you to Cyril for agreeing to play for us.

Bible readings were read by Christine Chaffe and Revd Martin Dale. The vicars talk was about how a mother eagle cares for her young, and how God cares and supports us in similar ways. This was very effective and will, I am sure, be quite memorable for those who attended.

Bunches of daffodils were distributed by Tim Clayton. Many thanks to Julie Cousins for getting these for us.

FENLAND FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY

At our March meeting our members joined forces to look at what we call ‘brick walls’ where we struggle to get information for our family research. We were able to share information and hopefully break through the walls. One member had a problem with an aunt who changed her name and her age to hide the fact she had four illegitimate children. Another had several generations of their forefathers having several marriages so the woman was known by various surnames. It is always a challenge but a great sense of achievement when you get the results.

COMPUTER SESSIONS. Which are free and offer help to anyone interested in family history. Our experienced researchers will help you and show you how to use all the library facilities to do your own research. Or they will work alongside you doing your research with you. You will find them in Wisbech Library on the first Tuesday of the month from 10 – 12 noon in the upstairs events room. Sadly our second research session in Wyevale will cease in April, as the garden Centre in Crowland will close at the end of April. OUR NEW VENUE for our research sessions will in at the new BAYTREE Garden Centre. On the SECOND MONDAY of the month from 11 – 3 p.m. We look forward to meeting you in the Barn Restaurant. 26

OUR MONTHLY MEETINGS are held on the FOURTH Thursday of each month in Wisbech Library from 7 – 9pm. Including a Speaker, Book Shop and Reference Stand and our researchers will be on hand to help with research at the beginning of the meetings. Our next Meeting will be on Thursday 23rd May our guest speaker will be Robin HINE his talk will be ‘Patterns of Nonconformity in Wisbech’. On June meeting on Thursday 27th June we have been invited to attend a talk by to be held in the Wisbech Museum 7 – 9 p.m. Our meetings are open to everyone visitors a donation of £2.

EVENTS our team will be out and about attending various local events with our interesting displays. You will find us on 11th May at St Augustine Church Wisbech for their 150th anniversary our display will match their theme ‘Weddings through the Ages’. Also at Elgood’s Brewery on 12th May with an interesting display in the Thatched Barn. Followed by The Walpole St Peter Flower Festival from 31st May for four days we match our imaginative display to the theme of the festival ‘Transport through the Ages’.
