Cultural Anthropology through the Lens of Wikipedia: Historical Leader Networks, Gender Bias, and News-based Sentiment Peter A. Gloor, Joao Marcos, Patrick M. de Boer, Hauke Fuehres, Wei Lo, Keiichi Nemoto [email protected] MIT Center for Collective Intelligence Abstract In this paper we study the differences in historical World View between Western and Eastern cultures, represented through the English, the Chinese, Japanese, and German Wikipedia. In particular, we analyze the historical networks of the World’s leaders since the beginning of written history, comparing them in the different Wikipedias and assessing cultural chauvinism. We also identify the most influential female leaders of all times in the English, German, Spanish, and Portuguese Wikipedia. As an additional lens into the soul of a culture we compare top terms, sentiment, emotionality, and complexity of the English, Portuguese, Spanish, and German Wikinews. 1 Introduction Over the last ten years the Web has become a mirror of the real world (Gloor et al. 2009). More recently, the Web has also begun to influence the real world: Societal events such as the Arab spring and the Chilean student unrest have drawn a large part of their impetus from the Internet and online social networks. In the meantime, Wikipedia has become one of the top ten Web sites1, occasionally beating daily newspapers in the actuality of most recent news. Be it the resignation of German national soccer team captain Philipp Lahm, or the downing of Malaysian Airlines flight 17 in the Ukraine by a guided missile, the corresponding Wikipedia page is updated as soon as the actual event happened (Becker 2012. -

During the first three decades of the twentieth century, Japanese society underwent significant changes in a short amount of time. After the intense modernizations of the late nineteenth century, the start of the twentieth century witnessed an increase in overseas militarism, turbulent domestic politics, an evolving middle class, and the expansion of roles for women to play outside the home. As such, the early decades of the twentieth century in Japan were a crucial period for the formation of modern ideas about femininity and womanhood. Before, during, and after the rule of her husband Emperor Taishō (1879-1926; r. 1912-1926), Empress Teimei held a highly public role, and was frequently seen in a variety of visual media. -

They have, however, rarely addressed the question of whether these encounters are mutually desirable or, on the contrary, uninvited and therefore aggressive. For fear of anachronism, the topic of sexual violence has not been commonly pursued in the analyses of monogatari. I argue that not only can the phenomenon of sexual violence be clearly defined in the context of the monogatari genre, by drawing on contemporary feminist theories and philosophical debates, but also that it is easily identifiable within the text of these tales, by virtue of the coherent and cohesive patterns used to represent it. In my analysis of seven monogatari—Taketori, Utsuho, Ochikubo, Genji, Yoru no Nezame, Torikaebaya and Ariake no wakare—I follow the development of the textual representations of sexual violence and analyze them in relation to the role of these tales in supporting or subverting existing gender hierarchies. Finally, I examine the connection between representations of sexual violence and the monogatari genre itself. -

Though Genji ipponkyō makes no explicit claim to the efficacy of the kuyō, its performance is presumably successful and saves the Genji author. In such a case the earliest extant utterance of the Murasaki-in-hell story is coupled with her subsequent salvation, and the Genji author, though damned, is also to be saved.3 It may be more accurate, then, to say that the Murasaki Shikibu daraku ron is about Murasaki Shikibu’s deliverance, rather than her fall (daraku). Prior to Western influence, pre- modern Japanese society viewed imperial portraits as religious objects for private, commemorative use; only imperial family members and close supporters viewed these portraits. The Confucian notion of filial piety and the Buddhist tradition of tsuizen influenced the production of these commemorative or mortuary portraits. By the Meiji period, however, Western portrait practice had affected how Japan perceived its imperial portraiture. Because the Meiji government socially and politically constructed the ideal role of Emperor Meiji and used the portrait as a means of propaganda to elevate the emperor to the status of a divinity, it instituted controlled public viewing of the images of Japanese emperors. -

McClure University of Washington Abstract Saigyō’s “Six Elements and Four Mandalas” Sequence: The Story and Rhetoric of Enlightenment Bonnie L. McClure Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Associate Professor Paul S. Atkins Asian Languages and Literature This paper analyzes Saigyō’s little-discussed waka cycle on the six elements and four mandalas of Shingon. I first introduce the sequence in the context of other similar works by Saigyō, then turn to a discussion of the place of Saigyō’s poetry as a whole within the history of Buddhist themes in Japanese poetry. Saigyō lived at a turning point when Heian-era tension between the poetic and Buddhist traditions was giving way to robust and varied philosophical defenses of their compatibility. Saigyō’s work formed a defense of this compatibility via practice: he allowed his Buddhist and poetic impulses to confront each other within his poetry. After tracing this thread through Saigyō’s oeuvre more broadly, I introduce the Shingon conceptualization of the six elements and four mandalas, then translate and analyze each of Saigyō’s ten poems, commenting on stylistic elements and allusions and on the larger structure of the cycle. I find these poems to be representative of Saigyō’s broader vision in that they treat a Buddhist concept with the same sense of narrative and inner dialogue that marks the encounter between Buddhism and poetry in Saigyō’s work as a whole. -

Taira Tadamori was annoyed. Very annoyed. A Chinese ship lay offshore loaded with goods that meant hefty profits. But here too were the pests he had he had tried to dodge: Dazaifu inspectors intent on boarding the ship, interrogating the captain, and inspecting the cargo so they could nab a considerable part of it in the name of taxes and fees. The ship’s captain was fuming. Had Taira Tadamori forgotten his assurance that at this out-of-the-way anchorage there would be no hungry officials? On the strength of that promise he had by-passed the familiar port of Hakata to sail a long, looping course southward around Kyushu’s western outreaches through island-clogged passages and bays then back northward more than sixty miles to the farthest shore of the gulf called the Ariake Sea. Here, he had been assured, was the security of the estate that Tadamori managed. Tadamori tried to cool the irate Chinese. He insisted that he could handle the situation. As manager he represented the owners of the estate, and though it was held by a temple in the capital that temple had been founded by imperial order and the estate was in fact part of the lanes belonging to the imperial family. In this year 1133 the head of the imperial family was the retired emperor Toba, the most influential man in the capital. Toba took a keen interest in the family lands. He was zealous in expanding them and he would not look kindly on any attempt to cut into the revenue they yielded.
