Published for the first time more than a decade ago as a booklet in a modest cyclostyled shape by the Cultural Department of the Indonesian Embassy in India, it has been revised several times in Jakarta in the same form to keep up to date with new discoveries and current theories. Since it seemed to have filled a need felt by foreigners as well as Indonesians to obtain an elementary knowledge of Indonesia's past, it has been thought wise to publish it now in a printed form with the aim to reach a larger public than before. -

Finnigan Karma Moral Responsibility Buddhist Ethics

He also accepted a version of the doctrine of karmic rebirth, according to which good and bad actions accrue merit and demerit respectively and where this determines the nature of the agent’s next life and explains some of the beneficial or harmful occurrences in that life. But how is karmic rebirth possible if there are no selves? If there are no selves, it would seem there are no agents that could be held morally responsible for ‘their’ actions. If actions are those happenings in the world performed by agents, it would seem there are no actions. And if there are no agents and no actions, then morality and the notion of karmic retribution would seem to lose application. Historical opponents argued that the Buddha's teaching of no self was tantamount to moral nihilism. The Buddha, and later Buddhist philosophers, firmly reject this charge. The relevant philosophical issues span a vast intellectual terrain and inspired centuries of philosophical reflection and debate. This article will contextualise and survey some of the historical and contemporary debates relevant to moral psychology and Buddhist ethics. They include whether the Buddha's teaching of no-self is consistent with the possibility of moral responsibility; the role of retributivism in Buddhist thought; the possibility of a Buddhist account of free will; the scope and viability of recent attempts to naturalise karma to character virtues and vices, and whether and how right action is to be understood within a Buddhist framework. -

Komponen lingkungan yang digambarkan pada panel relief dan menarik untuk dikaji, salah satunya adalah penggambaran tanaman pada relief. Tanaman merupakan salah satu elemen penting untuk menunjang kehidupan manusia pada masa lalu khususnya pada masa perkembangan Hindhu/ Buddha periode Jawa Tengah. Indentifikasi tanaman dapat dilakukan dengan pengamatan langsung. Setelah tanaman dapat diidentifikasi jenisnya maka konteks pengambaran tanaman berperan penting dalam menentukan kondisi lingkungan dimana tanaman tersebut tumbuh. Apabila ditarik pada masa kini, maka indentifikasi tanaman dan klasifikasi konteks penggambaran tanaman dapat bermanfaat dalam pelestarian lanskap budaya Kawasan Strategis Nasional Borobudur. ABSTRACT The relief story of Borobudur Temple and Mendut Temple is a depiction of the Old Javanese environment of the 8th-10th century CE. The environmental components depicted in the relief panels are interesting to study, one of which is the depiction of plants in relief. Plants are one of the important elements to support human life in the past, especially during the Hindu-Buddhist period of Central Java. Plants identification can be done by direct observation. After the plants can be identified, the context of plant propagation plays an important role in determining the environmental conditions in which the plants grow. -

In 1910 van Erp made an inventory of the Indo-Javanese sculptures which King Chulalongkorn of Thailand was allowed to take back to Bangkok as a memento of his extensive state visit to Indonesia in 1896. Owing to the First World War the article was not published until 1917. In 1923 and 1927 he wrote two more articles about this group of sculptures giving additional information. The piece the loss of which he most regretted was the unique dvarapala 1 of Barabudur (see PI. 1). According to van Erp this image was first noticed by an unknown visitor to Barabudur who stayed as a guest with the Resident, C. L. Hartmann, in May 1840.2 This anonymous person made the following note in his diary, which was later published in 1858 3: "A hill almost as high as that on which Boro Boedoer is situated and which rises almost immediately at its foot had for some time attracted my attention. The demang of Probolingo district, who acted as my guide, took me up this hill and told me that he wanted to show me the 'toekan' (architect) of that beautiful temple. Source: Daud Tanudirjo. The grandeur of Borobudur has fascinated almost every visitor who views it. Situated in the heart of the island of Java in Indonesia, this remarkable stone structure is considered to be the most significant Buddhist monument in the Southern Hemisphere (Figure 1). In 1991, Borobudur 66 Transcending the Culture–Nature Divide in Cultural Heritage was inscribed on the World Heritage List, together with two other smaller stone temples, Pawon and Mendut. These three stone temples are located over a straight line of about three kilometres on an east-west orientation, and are regarded as belonging to a single temple complex (Figure 2). Known as the Borobudur Temple Compound, this World Heritage Site meets at least three criteria of the Operational Guidelines for the Implementation of the World Heritage Convention: (i) to represent a masterpiece of human creative genius, (ii) to exhibit an important interchange of human values over a span of time or within cultural area of the world, on developments in architecture or technology, monumental arts, town planning or landscape design, and (iii) to be directly or tangibly associated with events or living traditions, with ideas, or with beliefs, with artistic and literacy works of outstanding universal value (see also Matsuura 2005).
