Daniel I evaluated the response of the federally listed endangered plant species Bradshaw's desert parsley (Lomatium bradshawii) to livestock grazing and small mammal depredation at Oak Creek, Linn County, Oregon, 1997-1998. I established six study blocks (three each in wooded and herbaceous pastures) with plots in each block randomly assigned to one of four intensities of livestock grazing based on biomass remaining after grazing (no grazing [1,746 kg/ha], high biomass [969 kg/ha], moderate biomass [670 kg/ha], and light biomass [318 kg/ha]). Small mammals were live-trapped in each of the study blocks pre and post application of the livestock grazing treatments. I mapped and measured 2,807 Bradshaw's desert parsley plants (n1,366 in the wooded and n = 1,441 in the herbaceous pastures) over the two year period to determine changes in schizocarp production, morphological structure (conical surface area and height), population composition (plant stage), survival, emergence of new plants, and effects of small mammal herbivory pre and post application of livestock grazing. Grazing reductions in standing crop biomass appeared to have a positive effect on emergence of new Bradshaw's desert parsley plants, while having no detectible effect on total plant density or survival. Differences in total plant density, survival, schizocarp production, morphological structure, and population composition were related to pasture type. -

Most are very difficult to identify without the help of good illustrations. This is designed to be a simple, color photo guide to help you identify some of these plants. The selection of plants displayed in this guide is by no means complete. The intent is to expand the quality and quantity of photos over time. The revision date is shown on the cover and on the header of each photo page. A comprehensive plant list for this area (including the many species not found in this publication) can be downloaded at the East Bay Regional Park District’s wild plant download page at: http://www.ebparks.org. Wallace California Botanic Garden [formerly Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden], 1500 North College Avenue, Claremont, California 91711 ([email protected]) abstract An account of the extent, diversity, and importance of the Californian collections of Thomas Coulter in the herbarium (TCD) of Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland, is presented here. It is based on examination of collections in TCD, several other collections available online, and referenced literature. Additional infor- mation on historical context, content of herbarium labels and annotations is included. Coulter’s collections in TCD are less well known than partial duplicate sets at other herbaria. He was the first botanist to cross the desert of southern California to the Colorado River. Coulter’s collections in TCD include not only 60 vascular plant specimens previously unidentified as type material but also among the first moss andmarine algae specimens known to be collected in California. A list of taxa named for Thomas Coulter is included. -

HARRISON2 1 USDA-Forest Service, Paci®c Southwest Region, 1323 Club Drive, Vallejo, CA 94592 [email protected] 2 Department of Environmental Science and Policy, University of California, Davis, CA 95616 3 Information Center for the Environment, DESP, University of California, Davis, CA 95616 ABSTRACT We present a summary of a database documenting levels of af®nity to ultrama®c (``serpentine'') sub- strates for taxa in the California ¯ora, USA. We constructed our database through an extensive literature search, expert opinion, ®eld observations, and intensive use of accession records at key herbaria. We developed a semi-quantitative methodology for determining levels of serpentine af®nity (strictly endemic, broadly endemic, strong ``indicator'', etc.) in the California ¯ora. In this contribution, we provide a list of taxa having high af®nity to ultrama®c/serpentine substrates in California, and present information on rarity, geographic distribution, taxonomy, and lifeform. Of species endemic to California, 12.5% are restricted to ultrama®c substrates. Most of these taxa come from a half-dozen plant families, and from only one or two genera within each family. The North Coast and Klamath Ranges support more serpentine endemics than the rest of the State combined. 15% of all plant taxa listed as threatened or endangered in California show some degree of association with ultrama®c substrates. Information in our database should prove valuable to efforts in ecology, ¯oristics, biosystematics, conservation, and land management. -
