Hours Of Service Changes Begins July 1: Are you prepared? inside Truck Driving On July 1, 2013, the last two parts of the hours of service regulations begin. The new rules prohibit a driver from being on-duty for more than 8 hours without a 30 Championships Results minute break. A break is considered “off duty” time. A driver does not need to spend the time resting. Meal breaks or any other “off duty” time of 30 minutes will count as a break. The definition of “off duty” changed when the first round of the regulations came into effect. A driver can now log “off duty” while remaining in a commercial motor vehicle.
However, this change does not alter the existing requirement to log time “on duty” when the driver has vehicle responsibility such as loading or unloading. In explaining the final rules, the FMCSA stated, “Unless a driver is released from all responsibility for the vehicle while waiting to be loaded or unloaded, time spent waiting is still considered on duty time.” All KMCA forms are available on our website: The regulations slightly retain the 34 hour restart. There are several significant www.kmca.org limitations that need to be met to get credit for the restart.
It can only be used once per week. This is not a calendar week, but refers to the 168 hours that comprise a week (7 days times 24 hours). The 168 hours must pass from the time the driver begins his 34 hours off until the next time he can begin his next 34 hours off for the restart to count. Kansas SuperTech Competition
The premier skills competition for professional commercial vehicle technicians! Contestants, who come from all segments of the trucking industry, will take an ASE-style online test with the top 12 moving on to the final hands-on competition. The hands-on competition features stations designed to measure thorough knowledge of heavy-duty commercial vehicles, including theory and practical application.
The winner of the Kansas competition wins a trip (hotel and flight expenses paid) to the national competition in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Quick Facts: • The competition is open to all actively employed heavy-duty truck diesel technicians in Kansas. Company must be a KMCA member. Service managers, trainers, and instructors are not eligible to enter. At least one year of technician employment with current company is required. • There is no entry fee to enter and compete. • Encourages technicians to stay current. Online Testing will need to be completed between July 10-17.
