The exo- dus of its textile manufacturing base has not only left the county in search of new employment opportunities but has also left the county in search of a new identity. The types of relatively low skilled work that afforded our students’ parents and grandparents with a family-sustaining wage have all but disappeared. Hence, there exists much uncertainty as to what will emerge as the new economic driver within the county. We believe that Rock- ingham County Schools, in collaboration Spray Cotton Mill Eden, NC with Rockingham Community College (RCC) along with business and community leaders, have to play a leadership role in addressing what we perceive to be a growing gap between the world of education and the world of work. If we are to improve the economic condition of our community, we must work in a consorted effort to close the gap between the technical skills that our citizens currently possess and those skills that are required for available careers. We must develop the types of career skills within our young people that are essential to success in the workforce, and we have to work together to develop the kind of thinking skills that will not only afford our students success within the current job market but will also grant them the capacity to adapt to the demands of such a rapidly changing economy. Our stu- dents will undoubtably be confronted with perplexing problems and unprecedented challenges within their lifetime. If we are to meet such challenges, then we are going to need the contributions of all of our young people. -

Sound Recording in the British Folk Revival: Ideology, Discourse and Practice, 1950–1975
Sound recording in the British folk revival: ideology, discourse and practice, 1950–1975 Matthew Ord Submitted in fulfilment of the degree of PhD International Centre for Music Studies Newcastle University March 2017 Abstract Although recent work in record production studies has advanced scholarly understandings of the contribution of sound recording to musical and social meaning, folk revival scholarship in Britain has yet to benefit from these insights. The revival’s recording practice took in a range of approaches and contexts including radio documentary, commercial studio productions and amateur field recordings. This thesis considers how these practices were mediated by revivalist beliefs and values, how recording was represented in revivalist discourse, and how its semiotic resources were incorporated into multimodal discourses about music, technology and traditional culture. Chapters 1 and 2 consider the role of recording in revivalist constructions of traditional culture and working class communities, contrasting the documentary realism of Topic’s single-mic field recordings with the consciously avant-garde style of the BBC’s Radio Ballads. The remaining three chapters explore how the sound of recorded folk was shaped by a mutually constitutive dialogue with popular music, with recordings constructing traditional performance as an authentic social practice in opposition to an Americanised studio sound equated with commercial/technological mediation. As the discourse of progressive rock elevated recording to an art practice associated with the global counterculture, however, opportunities arose for the incorporation of rock studio techniques in the interpretation of traditional song in the hybrid genre of folk-rock. Changes in studio practice and technical experiments with the semiotics of recorded sound experiments form the subject of the final two chapters. -
Rupert Hine Obituary British Folk Musician Turned Record Producer Who Masterminded Tina Turner’S Triumphant Comeback Album Private Dancer

OBITUARY Rupert Hine obituary British folk musician turned record producer who masterminded Tina Turner’s triumphant comeback album Private Dancer Monday August 10 2020, 12.01am, The Times Rupert Hine in the recording studio in 1973. He went on to pioneer digital production with synth-pop acts in the 1980s FIN COSTELLO/REDFERNS Share Save When Rupert Hine was producing the album that resurrected Tina Turner’s career, he made the mistake of asking her to do a second take. It was the first time he had worked with her and they were recording Turner’s 1984 comeback album Private Dancer, for which Hine had written the opening song I Might Have Been Queen. She had taken his demo and rehearsed the song at home until she felt she had mastered it. “Then she would call you up and say, ‘I’m ready’,” Hine recounted. “I would pick her up from her house and drive her to the studio. She would jump out, run to the nearest microphone and let it out.” He soon realised his mistake in asking for two takes as a matter of course. “The one take was just extraordinary — word, tone and beat perfect.” When they began working together she had been living on food stamps after her divorce from her abusive husband, Ike Turner. Private Dancer went on to sell more than 20 million copies and top charts around the world. Hine also worked on Turner’s next two bestselling albums Break Every Rule and Foreign Aair but never felt the need again to demand a retake after her “nerve- tingling” one-shot performances. -
