OBITUARY Rupert Hine obituary British folk musician turned record producer who masterminded Tina Turner’s triumphant comeback album Private Dancer Monday August 10 2020, 12.01am, The Times Rupert Hine in the recording studio in 1973. He went on to pioneer digital production with synth-pop acts in the 1980s FIN COSTELLO/REDFERNS Share Save When Rupert Hine was producing the album that resurrected Tina Turner’s career, he made the mistake of asking her to do a second take. It was the first time he had worked with her and they were recording Turner’s 1984 comeback album Private Dancer, for which Hine had written the opening song I Might Have Been Queen. She had taken his demo and rehearsed the song at home until she felt she had mastered it. “Then she would call you up and say, ‘I’m ready’,” Hine recounted. “I would pick her up from her house and drive her to the studio. She would jump out, run to the nearest microphone and let it out.” He soon realised his mistake in asking for two takes as a matter of course. “The one take was just extraordinary — word, tone and beat perfect.” When they began working together she had been living on food stamps after her divorce from her abusive husband, Ike Turner. Private Dancer went on to sell more than 20 million copies and top charts around the world. Hine also worked on Turner’s next two bestselling albums Break Every Rule and Foreign Aair but never felt the need again to demand a retake after her “nerve- tingling” one-shot performances.

  • Get 'Em out by Friday the Official Release Dates 1968-78 Introduction
Genesis: Get ‘Em Out By Friday The Official Release Dates 1968-78 Introduction Depending on where one looks for the information, the original release dates of Genesis singles and albums are often misreported. This article uses several sources, including music paper cuttings, websites and books, to try and determine the most likely release date in the UK for their officially released product issued between 1968 and 1978. For a detailed analysis to be completed beyond 1978 will require the input of others that know that era far better than I with the resources to examine it in appropriate levels of detail. My own collection of source material essentially runs dry after 1978. As most people searching for release dates are likely to go to Wikipedia that is where this search for the truth behind Genesis’ back catalogie. The dates claimed on Wikipedia would themselves have come from a number of sources referenced by contributors over the years but what these references lack is the evidence to back up their claims. This article aims to either confirm or disprove these dates with the added bonus of citing where this information stems from. It’s not without a fair share of assumptions and educated deductions but it offers more on this subject than any previously published piece. The main sources consulted in the writing of this article are as follows: 1. The Genesis File Melody Maker 16 December 1972 2. Genesis Information Newsletter Issue No. 1 October 1976 3. Wax Fax by Barry Lazzell - a series of articles on Genesis releases published in Sounds over several weeks in 1977 4.

  • Studio: an Introduction to the History and Culture of the Residential Recording Studio
The “Resort” Studio: An Introduction to the History and Culture of the Residential Recording Studio by Gabrielle Kielich A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music and Culture Carleton University Ottawa, ON © 2015 Gabrielle Kielich Abstract Residential recording studios began to emerge in the 1960s. They were located in remote areas, featured onsite living accommodations, state-of-the-art technology, and recreational amenities. The “resort” studio conceptualizes the function and use of these studios as alternative workspaces. In this thesis, three case studies illuminate their development, ownership, and operation, and their intersection of work and living spaces in isolation. Resort studios were marked by diversity, but featured consistent design and working conditions. By combining the workplace and living space in relaxed atmospheres, resort studios blurred the distinction between work and leisure. However, their isolation from distractions created a concentrated creative work environment. The resort studio highlights music production as a social process beyond an industrial context, and draws attention to the confusion around musicians’ work as play. This thesis situates the resort studio within the continuum of studio configurations to contribute to a more complete version of studio history. ii Acknowledgements The past four years at Carleton have been among my most rewarding. My decision to return to university and change the direction of my career has brought with it transitions, challenges, excitement, and the support of many people. I would first like to thank my supervisor, Paul Théberge, for providing so much guidance on this project, from its very early days to full realization.

  • Gear Stories with Sylvia Massy
GEAR STORIES WITH SYLVIA MASSY The Age of the Customs A PERFECT STORM Back at the beginnings of modern civilization, soon after the invention of the wheel, the recording of music was often done through a haphazard collection of 2-track radio consoles slung together with raw wire and pow- ered by fossil fuels. Human beings spilled their souls onto long winding strips of plastic tape, rearranging iron particles and rewriting history. The invention of the wheel, in our case, was the invention of the multitrack tape recorder. What followed was the perfect storm of artistic ideas fueled by ravenous capitalism, creating the era of Custom Consoles. In 1967, a year after the groundbreaking 8-track recording of Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys, Ampex presented the first commercially avail- able 16-track machine, the MM-1000, and the landscape of the recording AI Z industry changed. Meanwhile, George Martin proved with The Beatles’ ON . B R multitrack masterpiece Sgt. Pepper’s that the engineer and producer were : M HOTO now, more than ever, a creative force in the making of popular music. P But one major problem existed: There was no standardized way for Brian Wilson working in Studio B at Ocean Way on the Dal-Con the audio engineer to use a multitrack recorder. In essence, you needed Custom Console in 2010 two separate mixers to do the job—one to route mics to the recorder and three-sided Custom that would rise up when you mixed so you could one to mix the multitrack’s playback for listening.
