Mae’r astudiaeth yn archwilio paham yr oedd dirfawr angen sianel ar wahân ar gyfer rhaglenni teledu Cymraeg ac yn trafod sut aeth trigolion Cymru ati i’w hennill trwy ddulliau cyfansoddiadol ac anghyfansoddiadol. Prif ffocws y traethawd yw dadansoddi’r hyn a gafwyd yn dilyn yr ymgyrch hirhoedlog i sefydlu S4C, gan holi a sefydlwyd sianel a feddai ar y rhinweddau a ddeisyfwyd gan yr ymgyrchwyr. Mae’r astudiaeth yn ystyried y sialensiau a wynebwyd gan yr Awdurdod newydd, a chan swyddogion a staff y sianel wrth iddynt gynllunio a chyflwyno gwasanaeth teledu Cymraeg cynhwysfawr, y polisîau a ffurfiwyd ganddynt a’r cydberthynasau a saemíwyd gyda’r BBC, HTV, Channel 4 a’r cynhyrchwyr annibynnol. Mae’r traethawd hefyd yn pwyso a mesur ymateb y gynulleidfa i’r gwasanaeth a’r rhaglenni ac yn ystyried sut yr aeth y Swyddfa Gartref ati i adolygu’r sianel ar ddiwedd ei chyfnod prawf ym 1985. Trwy gyfrwng ddadansoddiad manwl o gofnodion y sefydliadau darlledu ym Mhrydain, erthyglau o’r wasg a chyfweliadau gyda nifer o’r unigolion fu’n allweddol i fenter S4C, darlunnir sut y llwyddodd y sianel i newid tirlun darlledu Cymm yn llwyr.     TRANSNATIONAL MEDIATRANSNATIONAL EVENTS In September 2005, a newspaper in Denmark published 12 cartoons depicting Mohammed, the holy Prophet of Islam. Soon after publication, these pictures became part of various events, political projects and diplomatic action. All over the world, the cartoons – or interpretations of them – were connected to dis- cursive struggles that pre-existed their drawing and publication. The cartoon event thus extended well beyond its immediate dramatic phase of spring 2006, both into the past and the future, and became at least a small landmark case of post-9/11 global media history. TRANSNATIONAL MEDIA EVENTS In this book, a community of international media researchers collects some of the lessons learned and questions provoked and offered by media coverage of The MOHAMMED CARTOONS and the the Mohammed cartoons in 16 countries, ranging from Denmark, Egypt and Argentina to Pakistan and Canada. The book looks at the coverage of the car- IMAGINED CLASH of CIVILIZATIONS toons and related incidents through a number of conceptual lenses: political spin, free speech theory, communication rights, the role of visuals and images in global communication, Orientalism and its counter-discourses, media’s rela- tions to immigration policy, and issues of integration. Through this approach, the book aims at a nuanced understanding of the cartoon controversy itself as well as at more general insights into the role of the media in contemporary transnational and transcultural relations.     News Consumption Survey 2019 Wales PROMOTING CHOICE • SECURING STANDARDS • PREVENTING HARM About the News Consumption report 2019 The aim of the News Consumption report is to inform understanding of news consumption across the UK and within each UK nation. This includes sources and platforms used, the perceived importance of different outlets for news, attitudes towards individual news sources, international and local news use. The primary source* is Ofcom’s News Consumption Survey. The survey is conducted using face-to- face and online interviews. In total, 2,156 face-to-face and 2,535 online interviews across the UK were carried out during 2018/19. The interviews were conducted over two waves (November & December and March) in order to achieve a robust and representative view of UK adults. The sample size for all adults over the age of 16 in Wales is 475. The full UK report and details of its methodology can be read here. *The News Consumption 2019 report also contains information from a range of industry currencies including BARB for television viewing, TouchPoints for newspaper readership, ABC for newspaper circulation and Comscore for online consumption. PROMOTING CHOICE • SECURING STANDARDS • PREVENTING HARM 2 Key findings from the 2019 report • TV remains the most-used platform for news nowadays by adults in Wales at 75%, compared to 80% last year. • Social media is the second most used platform for news in Wales (45%) and is used more frequently than any other type of internet news source. • More than half of adults (57%) in Wales use BBC One for news, but this is down from 68% last year.
