The Destruction of Immoral Temples in Qing China* Vincent Goossaert China, like other pre-modern East Asian countries, was characterized by a pluralistic reli- gious system. Although the Qing Imperial state (1644–1911) recognized this system by granting freedom of practice to a wide range of distinct religious traditions, it was not, for all that matter, tolerant. What was not included within the corpus of officially recognized practices was the object of repression in its various forms. This repression generally remained only a threat, but in some cases the threat was carried out and the reasons and ways in which it was carried out were generally complex and numerous. This article proposes to examine repressive acts as not being necessarily self-evident, as a way of understanding the logic and workings of a state apparatus in its dealings with the religious domain, a particularly difficult area to control.

    The Emergence and Organization of Chinese Religions1 Phyllis Ghim Lian Chew There has never been a time in recorded history when leadership has not occupied a central place in people’s views about politics, war, sport or business. In recent decades, there has been much research-based framework emphasizing sociological, psychological, behavioural and other theories of leadership. However, while there have been many studies on leadership, there has been very little interest on leadership and succession in religious organisations. For example, Weber (1993) has described the nature of bureaucracies but has shown little interest in the internal structure of religion. Likewise, the field of political science has many papers on democratic elections but they usually concentrate on policy outcomes. Economists pay a lot of attention to the internal structure of firms but not of religion. Religions are organized in a variety of ways. They may resemble an elected autocracy, a parliamentary democracy, or something akin to a monarchy, where heredity plays a primary role. Mao and Zech (2002) show how doctrinal concerns put limits on the organisational forms that a religion may take. Giuriato (2009) in her study of the Catholic Church has written about an elected autocracy. Historians (Reese, 1996, Baumgarten 1998) have written about the struggle for power within a particular religion but their methodologies are not the same. For the most part, their studies are on Christianity and Islam and very little is known about the management structure of Chinese religion. 10 Lights of Irfán vol. 15 Archaeological discoveries in China have established that, from the earliest times, the Chinese people have had an awareness of the unseen power, felt it and worshipped it.

This tradition began in the Tang dynasty and evolved to include dramatic pieces, vernacular novels, and various forms of populär literature such äs precious scrolls and bailads. Its main themes are Han Xiangzi's efforts to achieve immortality through internal alchemy and his subsequent deliverance of his relatives, including most prominently his uncle Han Yu, the famous Tang dynasty scholar, and his wife Lin Ying (or Luying). Mixing Daoist proselytizing and anti-Confucian polemic, the Han Xiangzi story merges religious and literary concerns in a manner that throws an interesting light on the interplay of religion and literature in late Imperial China. In addition to analyzing the key themes in the Han Xiangzi literature, the paper addresses instances of populär worship of Han Xiangzi and the degree to which his perception in this context was shaped by his literary images. As a number of interpretive options are explored in tackling this problem, general issues of the relationship of religion, myth, and literature in late Imperial and modern China are addressed.
