Administrative division

As at December 31, 2017, the investigation land area of Shandong Province totaled 157,965km2. By the end of 2017, the total population of Shandong was 100,058,300. By December 31, 2017, Shandong Province had jurisdiction over 17 prefecture-level cities including Ji’nan, , , , , , , Ji’ning, Tai'an, , , , , , , and , covering 137 county-level units and 1,824 township-level administrative units.

Geological resources

[Location & area] Shandong Province is located on the eastern coast of and the lower reaches of the , between 34°22.9′~38°24.01′N and 114°47.5′~122°42.3′E. The territory is composed of the peninsula and inland. The stands out in the and the , facing the . The inland part is bordered by , He’nan, and provinces from the north to the south. The territory is about 420km long from north to south and around 700km wide from east to west, with a total area of 157,100km2, accounting for 1.64% of the total area of China, The capital of Shandong Province is Ji’nan.

[Terrain & landform] The terrain of the province is composed of mountains in the center and basins and plains in the northwest and the northwest, forming a landform of mountainous & hills as the skeleton and the plains & basins interlaced. The mountain area accounts for 15.5% of the total area of the province, hills 13.2%, plains 55%, lowlands 4.1%, lakes & plains 4.4%, and others 7.8%.

[Rivers & lakes] Shandong has a developed waters system. The average density of natural rivers is more than 0.7km/km2. There are more than 1,500 rivers with main streams measuring over 10km in length, of which more than 300 enter the sea in Shandong.

[Coast & sea area] The offshore sea area of the province is 170,000km2, accounting for 37% of the total area of the Bohai Sea and the Yellow Sea. In the offshore sea area, there are more than 20 natural harbors and 299 islands, with a total area of 147km2, the largest of which is Nanchangshan Island in the Miaodao Islands, covering an area of 12km2.

[Climate] Shandong features climate of warm temperature zone, with centralized rainfall, same raining & hot season, short duration of spring & autumn and long duration of winter and summer. The annual average temperature is 11°C ~ 14°C, and the difference in temperature is greater in east and west. The frost-free period ascends from the northeastern coast to the southwest: 180 days in north and east Shandong and 220 days in southwest Shandong. With abundant light resources, the annual sunshine duration of Shandong is 2,290 - 2,890 hours, and the heats are sufficient for the growth of crops for two years. The annual average is generally between 550mm and 950 mm, decreasing from southeast to northwest. With unbalanced precipitation in a year, 60%~70% of precipitation occurs in summer, which may result in floods and drought in winter and spring and late autumn, causing great impacts on agricultural production.

[Land resources] According to the land change survey, the total land area of the province is 15.7126 million hectares, accounting for 1.63% of the total area of China, ranking the 19th in China. Wherein, the area of agricultural land is 11.566 million hectares, accounting for 73.61% of the total; that of construction land is 2.511 million hectares, accounting for 15.98% of the total; and that of unused land is 1.636 million hectares, accounting for 10.41% of the total.

[Water resources] Main features of water resources in Shandong: Insufficient total amount of water resources; low quantity per capita and acre; uneven distribution among regions; dramatics changes in and over years; and close connection between surface water and groundwater.

[Maritime resources] Shandong enjoys advantageous maritime resources. The offshore waters account for 37% of the total area of Bohai Sea and Yellow Sea, and the beach area accounts for 15% of national total. There are more than 260 kinds of fish and inhabited and migrated offshore, including over 40 kinds of commercial fishes, nearly 20 kinds of shrimps and crabs with high economic value and yield, and more than 100 kinds of shellfish in shallow beaches (20 with high economic value).

[Wild plants and animals] Shandong has a large variety and number of biological resources - more than 3,100 kinds of plants, including 645 wild economic plants.

It also has 500 species of terrestrial wild vertebrates, including 73 species of mammals, 406 species of birds (including subspecies), 28 species of reptiles and 10 species of amphibians.

Overall

Upon preliminary estimation, the GDP of Shandong amounted to RMB7,267.82 billion (up by 7.4% YoY, calculated at comparable price), including: (i) RMB487.67 billion from primary (up by 3.5% YoY); (ii) RMB3,292.51 billion from secondary industry (up by 6.3% YoY); and (iii) RMB3,487.63 billion from tertiary industry (up by 9.1% YoY). The three industries constitute a structure of 6.7:45.3:48.0. The per-capita GDP was RMB72,851, equivalent to USD10,790 calculated at the annual average exchange rate.

The resident population exceeded 100 million. In 2017, the birth population was 1,749,800, with a of 17.54 ‰; the death toll was 738,200, with a mortality rate of 7.40 ‰; and the natural growth rate was 10.14 ‰.

Agriculture

The food production of Shandong Province hit a new high. The added value of agriculture was RMB280.23 billion, with an increase of 4.6% over 2016. The total grain output was 47.232 million tons, up by 0.5% YoY, registering the historical high.

Forestry, animal husbandry and fishery maintained a stable growth. The added value of forestry was RMB11.6 billion, up by 9.9% YoY; that of animal husbandry was RMB99.78 billion, up by 3.7% YoY; and that of fishery was RMB96.06 billion, down by 0.5% YoY.

Industry

The industrial production achieved a stable increase. The added value of all the industries was RMB2,870.57 billion, with an increase of 6.6% over 2016. The added value of industries above scale increased by 6.9%, of which the light industry grew by 6.9%, heavy industry by 6.9%; equipment manufacturing by 11.0%, high-tech industry by 10.9%, and six high energy-consuming sectors by 3.6%. The industrial production and sales rate was 98.9%.

Open economy

Foreign trade experienced a rapid growth. In 2017, the imports and exports of Shandong Province totaled RMB1,782.39 billion (up by 15.2% YoY), including imports of RMB785.85 billion (up by 22.2% YoY) and exports of RMB996.54 billion (up by 10.1% YoY).

The foreign investment utilized grew steadily. A total of 1,479 foreign-invested enterprises were newly established; the foreign capital inn actual use amounted to RMB121.05 billion, UP BY 9.0% YoY.

The “going out” strategy is steadily advancing. The actual foreign investment was RMB37.75 billion.

The “Belt and Road” cooperation has achieved remarkable results. The imports and exports of commodities with countries along the “Belt and Road” totaled RMB481.63 billion (up by 16.4% YoY), of which RMB267.25 billion was recorded from export (up by 6.7%). The actual investment in the countries along the “Belt and Road” reached RMB10.06 billion, up by 81.7% YoY.

Service industry

The proportion of the service industry continues to increase. The added value of the service industry accounted for 48.0% of the regional (GDP), increasing by 1.3 ppts from 2016. The contribution rate of the service industry to economic growth reached 56.4%.
