Social Capital and Religion: the Contribution of Church in Mizoram
!" #! $ % #$# &'& Abstract This article discusses the concept of social capital and the role of religion, mainly Church, in producing what is known as Religious Social Capital in Mizoram. Drawing from various scholars, it attempts to define the concept of social capital by touching upon different dimensions associated with it. The multiple ways through which different religion related aspects help, shape and generate the stock of society’s social capital have been identified. It concludes that religious congregation is one major site for the generation of social capital in Mizo society. Keywords: social capital, religion, church, Christianity, Mizoram. Introduction Academic discussions of social capital show an increasing interest in the role of religion 1 and faith-based associations as an agent of its formation. There is a growing corpus of literature about the strategic role that religious organisations such as churches are playing in fostering and producing social capital leading to social cohesion and cooperation, inclusion, networks, shared norms of reciprocity, associational life, civic engagement, political activity etc. 2 In this light, this paper aims to find out the manner and extent to which church can be considered as an (*M. Focusing on the institutional aspects and membership, it is hypothesized that churches in Mizoram have been occupying the central place in the lives of the Mizos. They are providing common places and opportunity for people to meet, creating social networks of friends and neighbours, facilitating involvement and participation in voluntary associations concerned with the health and wealth of the community, enabling the members to develop a diverse range of civic skills like leadership skills, negotiation and bargaining tactics that are instrumental in active involvement in the political affairs of one’s society etc. -

Mizoram University Journal of Humanities & Social Sciences (A Bi-Annual Refereed Journal) Vol IV Issue 2, December 2018 ISSN: 2395-7352 eISSN:2581-6780 Cultural Factors of Christianizing the erstwhile Lushai Hills (1890-1940) Zadingluaia Chinzah* Abstract Alexandrapore incident became a turning point in the history of the erstwhile Lushai Hills inhabited by simple hill people, living an egalitarian and communitarian life. The result of the encounter between two diverse and dissimilar cultures that were contrary to their form of living and thinking in every way imaginable resulted in the political annexation of the erstwhile Lushai Hills by the British colonial power,which was soon followed by the arrival of missionaries. In consolidating their hegemony and imperial designs, the missionaries were tools through which the hill tribes were to be pacified from raiding British territories. In the long run, this encounter resulted in the emergence and escalation of Christianity in such a massive scale that the hill tribes with their primal religious practices were converted into a westernised reli- gion. The paper problematizes claims for factors that led to the rise of Christianity by various Mizo Church historians, inclusive of the early generations and the emerging church historians. Most of these historians believed that waves of Revivalism was the major factor in Christianizing the erstwhile Lushai Hills though their perspectives or approach to their presumptions are different. Hence, the paper hypothesizes that cultural factors were integral to the rise and growth of Christianity in the erstwhile Lushai Hills during 1890-1940 as against the claims made before. Since the State is evolving to be a monolingual state, more and more people tend to use only the local language, although skill in English language use is very highly valued by the people. Problems faced by both the teachers and the students are listed. Deficiencies in the syllabus as well as the textbooks are also pointed out. Some methods to improve the skills of both the teachers and students are suggested. Key words: English language teaching and learning, Mizoram schools, problems faced by students and teachers. 1. Introduction In order to understand the conditions and problems of teaching-learning English in Mizoram, it is important to delve into the background of Mizoram - its geographical location, the origin of the people (Mizo), the languages of the people, and the various cultures and customs practised by the people. Biblical Missiology: Class Notes 1. Introduction to Missiology Missiology is the study of Christian mission… especially cross-cultural mission. It considers how missionaries introduce the gospel to a new place, make disciples, and start churches. It draws on scholarship in the fields of biblical study, history, geography, sociology, psychology, linguistics, cultural anthropology, and in some contexts medicine and agriculture. Missiology is an interactive discipline. We interact with THEOLOGIANS (who know the Bible) and with MISSIONARIES (who know the people). A missiologist should challenge Bible scholars to be practical in the real world. A missiologist should also challenge missionaries to think biblically. To be a good missiologist, you will need an intelligent mind and a wide general knowledge. You will also need EXPERIENCE of mission work. If you have never been a MISSIONARY, you cannot be an effective MISSIOLOGIST. That would be like a car mechanic who never gets his hands dirty, or a cook who never goes into the kitchen. As students of biblical missiology, our responsibility is to consider: 1. How the gospel was defined and then proclaimed by Christ and his earliest apostles, 2. How the authentic gospel has been carried into all the world since then, 3. How we ourselves may be effective in proclaiming the gospel and discipling people from every ethnic group. HISTORICAL THEOLOGY HEAVENLY CITIZENSHIP: A CONCEPT FOR UNION AND AN IDENTITY MARKER FOR MIZO CHRISTIANS MARINA NGURSANGZELI BEHERA* ABSTRACT. Paul, as it is well known, was a citizen of the Roman Empire and he wrote these words about citizenship to a young congregation in a Hellenistic city. The Greek word „in Philippians 3:20” he uses here is translated differently as “conservation” (KJV), as “home” and as “citizenship” in the New American Standard (NAS) translation. So, Christian citizenship is in heaven - not on earth. It is from there Christians expect their Lord and savior to come. Yet, while living on earth and waiting until He comes and while being part of the larger human community each and every one is a member of political unit, a nation or a state or a tribe. The knowledge of the heavenly citizenship gives Christians an indication where to hope for true citizenship and gives at the same time a clear indication to distinguish between “heavenly” affairs and their allegiance to worldly powers on earth. During the initial period of the history of Christianity in Mizoram in order to differentiate one’s new identity was the conviction and the declaration that one is now Pathian mi (God’s people) and vanram mi (heavenly citizen). This significant concept and understanding of what it means for the Mizo to be Christian is reflected prominently in Mizo indigenous hymns and gospel songs as well as in the preaching of the Gospel, where it is declared that one is no longer a citizen of this “earthly world” (he lei ram mi), but of the “heavenly world” (van ram mi).
