Kansainvälinen lähetysseminaari oli Kirkkohallituksen ulkoasiain osaston Kirkon lähetystyön keskuksen 40-vuotisjuhlaseminaari. Liitteenä on myös ns. perussopimus sekä joulukuussa 2015 kirkon ulkoasiain neuvoston hyväksymä ”Yh- teinen todistus. Suomen evankelis-luterilaisen kirkon lähetyksen peruslinjaus” kieliversioineen. Aikaisemman lähetysasiakirjan (2010) päivitetty versio on syntynyt laajan vuorovaikutuksellisen työskentelyn pohjalta. Lo- pullisen muodon on valmistanut kirkon lähetystyön toimikunta. AHONEN GLOBAALIN KRISTINUSKON HAASTEET Kirkon lähetystyön keskus on kuluneen 40 vuoden aikana ansiokkaasti tukenut suomalaista lähetystyötä ja välittänyt tietoa siitä, mitä maailmalla on tapahtunut. KLK on saanut toimia suuren murrosvaiheen keskellä. Historian muutosvaiheiden aikana myös kieli muuttuu ja on jatkuvan muutosprosessin alainen. Eräät keskeiset teologiset käsitteet saattavat vanhentua ja kantaa mukanaan historiallisia rasitteita (kuten denomination, youn- ger churches, Christendom). Globaali kirkko on eräs tärkeistä uusista käsitteistä. On hyvä kysyä, tuoko puhe globaalista kirkosta ja globalisoitumisesta mitään olennaisesti uutta ekumeeniseen keskusteluun.1 Kirkon universaalisuus ja katolisuus ilmaisevat teologisina käsitteinä rikkaammin kirkon olemuksen kuin globaali kirkko, mutta se on myös hyödyllinen ja kuvaa kirkon todellisuutta mm. kahdella tavalla. Ensinnäkin globaali kirkko korostaa kristinuskon maailmanlaajuista luonnetta ja kirkkojen riippuvuutta toisistaan. Se mitä tapahtuu kirkolle toisella puolen maapalloa koskee myös meitä. Rajattomassa maailmassa ihmiset liikkuvat, muuttavat, käyvät kauppaa ja osallistuvat tutkimustyöhön kaukana kotimaastaan. Toiseksi globaali kirkko muistuttaa lähetystyön tavoitteesta viedä todistus Kristuksesta ”aina maan ääriin saakka”. Tämä suuri tavoite on toteutunut maantieteellisessä mielessä niin, että miltei kaikista maista löytyy kristillinen kirkko. Vielä on kuitenkin paljon sellaisia ihmisryhmiä ja ihmisiä, jotka eivät ole kuulleet mitään Kristuksesta tai eivät enää halua kuulla hänestä mitään. Lähetystyö jatkuu, mutta maantieteellinen ulottuvuus ei painotu niin paljon kuin aikaisemmin. Sen sijaan esimerkiksi ajallinen, eskatologinen tavoite lähetystehtävän täyttämisestä tulee entistä selvemmin esille.2 Jeesus liitti lähetyksen ja kaiken lopun yhteen. Aikaa on niin kauan kuin lähetystyö on kesken. Kirkot ovat aikaisemmin vähätelleet eskatologiaa ja se on jäänyt opin muodostuksessa sivuun. Tunnettua on esim. Friedrich Schleiermacherin näkemys, jonka mukaan ”opilla viimeisistä ajoista” ei ole samaa painoarvoa kuin muilla opin- kohdilla. Eskatologia on jätetty villin mielikuvituksen temmellyskentäksi ja lopun ajan merkkien sensaatioha- kuiseksi selvittelyksi. Ihmiset eivät ole kuitenkaan menettäneet kiinnostustaan lopun aikoja kohtaan, vaan ovat luoneet kirkon vaietessa sekulaarin eskatologian. Viihdeteollisuus on kehittänyt oman elokuvalajinsa ihmiskun- nan viimeisten päivien kuvailusta tai avaruusmatkoista. Yllättävän paljon tilaa saavat televisiossa ja aikakausleh- dissä erilaiset ennustajat. Lisaksi futurologiasta on tullut varteenotettava tieteenala.3 Kristillisen uskon eskatologinen sanoma on ainutlaatuinen ja monipuolinen ja avaa näkymän siitä, miten kerran Jumalaa ylistetään kaikilla kielillä ja kaikkien kulttuurien kauneimmilla ilmaisutavoilla. Viime aikojen missiologisessa keskustelussa on alettu syvemmin ymmärtää se, miten lähetyksessä on kyse Jumalan missiosta, maailmansuunnitelmasta, jossa hän pelastaa ihmisen Kristuksen pelastustyön tähden ja uu- distaa koko luomakunnan, luo uuden taivaan ja maan. Eskatologiassa ei ole niinkään kysymys kaiken lopusta kuin täyttymyksestä, täyttymyksestä uskon ymmärtämisessä ja perille pääsemisessä.4 1 Sanneh 2003, 22–23. G LOBAALIN KRISTINUSKON HAASTEET 7 KIRKKOJEN RIIPPUVUUS TOISISTAAN Evankeliumi Kristuksesta on levinnyt satojen kielten ja kulttuurien piiriin. Kauas on kuljettu Antiokian, ensim- mäisen kristillisen seurakunnan perustamisesta, jolloin uusi usko ylitti ensimmäisen kerran kulttuurirajat juuta- laisen ja hellenistisen kulttuurin kohdatessa toisensa. Monikielisen ja -kulttuurisen uskon universaalinen luonne tulee hyvin ilmi kunkin kielen arvostamisessa. Islamin mukaan vain yksi pyhä kieli, arabia kelpaa ilmoituksen ja rukouksen kieleksi., minkä vuoksi jokainen muslimi joutuu opettelemaan rukoilemista varten arabiankielisiä Koraanin lauseita. Andrew J. Walls ja Lamin Sanneh ovat osoittaneet sen, että kristinuskossa jokainen kieli ja kulttuuri on arvokas ja voi periaatteessa tulla kristinuskon uudeksi vallitsevaksi pääkieleksi ja kulttuuriksi.5 Kristilliset kirkot ovat joutuneet sinänsä tavattoman myönteisen, mutta kuitenkin hämmentävän kysymyk- sen eteen: muuttuuko uskon sisältö relatiiviseksi tulkintojen tulkinnaksi satojen kielien ja kulttuurien tuodessa oman kontribuutionsa uskon tulkintaan.

Introduction Academic discussions of social capital show an increasing interest in the role of religion 1 and faith-based associations as an agent of its formation. There is a growing corpus of literature about the strategic role that religious organisations such as churches are playing in fostering and producing social capital leading to social cohesion and cooperation, inclusion, networks, shared norms of reciprocity, associational life, civic engagement, political activity etc. 2 In this light, this paper aims to find out the manner and extent to which church can be considered as an (*M. Focusing on the institutional aspects and membership, it is hypothesized that churches in Mizoram have been occupying the central place in the lives of the Mizos. They are providing common places and opportunity for people to meet, creating social networks of friends and neighbours, facilitating involvement and participation in voluntary associations concerned with the health and wealth of the community, enabling the members to develop a diverse range of civic skills like leadership skills, negotiation and bargaining tactics that are instrumental in active involvement in the political affairs of one’s society etc.

Paul, as it is well known, was a citizen of the Roman Empire and he wrote these words about citizenship to a young congregation in a Hellenistic city. The Greek word „in Philippians 3:20” he uses here is translated differently as “conservation” (KJV), as “home” and as “citizenship” in the New American Standard (NAS) translation. So, Christian citizenship is in heaven - not on earth. It is from there Christians expect their Lord and savior to come. Yet, while living on earth and waiting until He comes and while being part of the larger human community each and every one is a member of political unit, a nation or a state or a tribe. The knowledge of the heavenly citizenship gives Christians an indication where to hope for true citizenship and gives at the same time a clear indication to distinguish between “heavenly” affairs and their allegiance to worldly powers on earth. During the initial period of the history of Christianity in Mizoram in order to differentiate one’s new identity was the conviction and the declaration that one is now Pathian mi (God’s people) and vanram mi (heavenly citizen). This significant concept and understanding of what it means for the Mizo to be Christian is reflected prominently in Mizo indigenous hymns and gospel songs as well as in the preaching of the Gospel, where it is declared that one is no longer a citizen of this “earthly world” (he lei ram mi), but of the “heavenly world” (van ram mi).

Abstract This thesis on the interaction between Mizo traditional culture and Christianity proceeds in the following five steps: Firstly, Hnatlang practices are introduced, analyzed and identified as the principle of Mizo pre-Christian socio-cultural, political, economical, and religious development. Secondly, it is argued that the Mizo nation embraced and appropriated Christianity based on the cognitive framework of Hnatlang which, in turn, shaped their understanding of church and mission. Thirdly, it is proposed that a profound process of indigenous ―translation‖, namely, by giving Hnatlang a central place in Christian understanding, was the major factor of indigenous church growth. This interpretation challenges the perspective that church growth in Mizoram was simply the fruit of the missionaries. Fourthly, it is shown that the application of the Hnatlang principle in the mission work of the Mizoram Presbyterian Church outside Mizoram led to significant friction and cultural dislocation in the (non-Mizo) target cultures in which the Mizo-s are agents the new ―European missionaries‖ in India (Mizo missionaries act in the same manner as most of the European missionaries).

It was Arthington’s bequest that led to missionary work among the Mizo people in 1901. During the British colonial period, which ended in 1947, Welsh Christian and Baptist missionaries evangelized among the Mizo people. Today almost 90 percent of Mizos belong to the Presbyterian Church, the Baptist church, or to one of the many indigenous Christian churches. It is impossible to comment on the contemporary position of Mizoram Presbyterian Church women without first reflecting on their indigenous activities and status. Past representations of Bible women and the challenges they encountered for the mission work under the strict rules of chieftains paint them as nothing more than the appendages of men. These representations, I believe, are distortions of their actual roles and positions. This case study challenges the notion that the key to empowerment is women’s economic status.
