Assam-Mizoram Border Dispute
Assam-Mizoram Border Dispute drishtiias.com/printpdf/assam-mizoram-border-dispute Why in News Recently, Assam-Mizoram border witnessed firing over a territory dispute, which spotlights the long-standing inter-state boundary issues in the Northeast, particularly between Assam and the states which were carved out of it. Mizoram borders Assam’s Barak Valley and the boundary between present- day Assam and Mizoram is 165 km long. Both states border Bangladesh. Key Points 1/3 Ongoing Tussle: Residents of Lailapur village in Assam’s Cachar district clashed with residents of localities near Vairengte in Mizoram’s Kolasib district. Earlier in October 2020, a similar clash took place on the border of Karimganj (Assam) and Mamit (Mizoram) districts. Mizoram civil society groups blame “illegal Bangladeshis” (alleged migrants from Bangladesh) on the Assam side. Background: The boundary issue between present-day Assam and Mizoram dates back to the colonial era when inner lines were demarcated according to the administrative needs of British Raj. The issue could not be settled once and for all when the state was created in independent India. The result is both states continue to have a differing perception of the border. Mizoram was granted statehood in 1987 by the State of Mizoram Act, 1986. Assam became a constituent state of India in 1950 and lost much of its territory to new states that emerged from within its borders between the early 1960s and the early 1970s. The Assam-Mizoram dispute stems from a notification of 1875 that differentiated Lushai Hills from the plains of Cachar, and another of 1933 that demarcates a boundary between Lushai Hills and Manipur. -

Interning Insurgent Populations: the buried histories of Indian Democracy Nandini Sundar Darzo (Mizoram) was one of the richest villages I have ever seen in this part of the world. There were ample stores of paddy, fowl and pigs. The villagers appeared well-fed and well-clad and most of them had some money in cash. We arrived in the village about ten in the morning. My orders were to get the villagers to collect whatever moveable property they could, and to set their own village on fire at seven in the evening. I also had orders to burn all the paddy and other grain that could not be carried away by the villagers to the new centre so as to keep food out of reach of the insurgents…. I somehow couldn’t do it. I called the Village Council President and told him that in three hours his men could hide all the excess paddy and other food grains in the caves and return for it after a few days under army escort. They concealed everything most efficiently. Night fell, and I had to persuade the villagers to come out and set fire to their homes. Nobody came out. Then I had to order my soldiers to enter every house and force the people out. Every man, woman and child who could walk came out with as much of his or her belongings and food as they could. But they wouldn’t set fire to their homes. Ultimately, I lit a torch myself and set fire to one of the houses. -

Social Capital and Religion: the Contribution of Church in Mizoram
!" #! $ % #$# &'& Abstract This article discusses the concept of social capital and the role of religion, mainly Church, in producing what is known as Religious Social Capital in Mizoram. Drawing from various scholars, it attempts to define the concept of social capital by touching upon different dimensions associated with it. The multiple ways through which different religion related aspects help, shape and generate the stock of society’s social capital have been identified. It concludes that religious congregation is one major site for the generation of social capital in Mizo society. Keywords: social capital, religion, church, Christianity, Mizoram. Introduction Academic discussions of social capital show an increasing interest in the role of religion 1 and faith-based associations as an agent of its formation. There is a growing corpus of literature about the strategic role that religious organisations such as churches are playing in fostering and producing social capital leading to social cohesion and cooperation, inclusion, networks, shared norms of reciprocity, associational life, civic engagement, political activity etc. 2 In this light, this paper aims to find out the manner and extent to which church can be considered as an (*M. Focusing on the institutional aspects and membership, it is hypothesized that churches in Mizoram have been occupying the central place in the lives of the Mizos. They are providing common places and opportunity for people to meet, creating social networks of friends and neighbours, facilitating involvement and participation in voluntary associations concerned with the health and wealth of the community, enabling the members to develop a diverse range of civic skills like leadership skills, negotiation and bargaining tactics that are instrumental in active involvement in the political affairs of one’s society etc. -

Carrying capacity is a concept that has been extensively applied in tourism and leisure studies since the 1960s, but its appearance can be date back to the 1930s. It may be viewed as an important thought in the eventual emergence of sustainability discussion, it has become less important in recent years as sustainability and its associated concepts have come to dominate planning on the management of tourism and its impacts. But the study of carrying capacity analysis is still an important tool to know the potentiality and future impact in tourism sector. Thus, up to some extent carrying capacity analysis is important study for tourist destinations and states like Mizoram. Mizoram is a small and young state with few thousands of visitors that visit the state every year. -

The overall mean TVC was recorded as 5.9985 ± 0.0254 log10cfu/g. Raw pork, However, the mean TVC were reported as 6.0577 ± 0.0406 and 5.9393 ± 0.0295 Bacteriological, TVC, CC, FSC, Aizawl, log10cfu/g from Aizawl and Imphal, respectively with significant variation -4 -5 Imphal between Aizawl and Imphal at 10 dilution (P<0.05) and at 10 dilution (P<0.01). All the pork samples from Aizawl and 98.00% samples from Imphal showed Article Info positive for coliform organisms. The overall mean CC was recorded as 5.2727 ± Accepted: 0.0707 log10cfu/g with the mean values of 5.3828 ± 0.0945 log10cfu/g from Aizawl 10 April 2018 and 5.1627 ± 0.1045 log cfu/g from Imphal. -

He is presently posted as Deputy Inspector General of Police, Central Reserve Police Force in Manipur. http://www.vifindia.org ©Vivekananda International Foundation Page 3 of 22 Displaced Brus from Mizoram in Tripura: Time for Resolution Abstract History has been witness to the conflict-induced internal displacement of people in different states of Northeast India from time to time. While the issues of such displacement have been resolved in most of the North-eastern States, the displacement of Brus from Mizoram has remained unresolved even over past two decades. Over 35,000 Brus have been living in six makeshift relief camps in North Tripura's Kanchanpur, areas adjoining Mizoram under inhuman conditions since October 1997. They had to flee from their homes due to ethnic violence in Mizoram. Ever since, they have been confined to their relief camps living on rations doled out by the state, without proper education and health facilities. Called Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), some of the young Brus from these camps have joined militant outfits out of desperation. There have been several rounds of talks among the stakeholders without any conclusive and time-bound resolutions. -

They point to the particular historical trajectory of interaction of state-making leaders and other social forces, and the divergent authority structure that took shape, as underpinning this difference. In Manipur, where social forces retained their authority, the state’s autonomy was compromised. This affected its capacity, including that to resolve group conflicts. Here powerful social forces politicized their narrow identities to capture state power, leading to competitive mobilisation and conflicts. -

Introduction Northeastern India – a compact region made up of seven sub-national states1- has historically seen high levels of violence, stemming mostly from ethnic and separatist conflicts. It was among the first of the regions, to demonstrate, on the attainment of Independence, signs of severe political crisis in the form of nationalist movements. This has translated into a string of armed separatist movements and inter-group ethnic conflicts that have become the enduring feature of its politics. Separatist rebellions broke out first in Naga Hills district of erstwhile Assam State, to be followed by similar armed movement in the Lushai Hills district of that State. Soon secessionism overtook Assam proper and in Tripura and Manipur. Of late Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh have joined the list of States that are characterised as unstable and violent. Despite the attempts of both the state and society, many of these violent movements have continued to this day with serious implications for the welfare of citizens (Table 1). Besides separatist violence, inter-group ethnic clashes have been frequent and have taken a heavy toll of life and property.2 Ethnic violence exists alongside inter-ethnic contestations, over resources and opportunities, in which the state finds itself pulled in different directions, with little ability to provide solutions.
