Mr. Benjamin Lakra Sastripuram, Opp Biru Complex, Main Road Simdega - 835223 Member 3 President’s Message SIGN has been engaged in variety of interventions all across Jharkhand be it empowering farmers, or spreading the rich messages of Laudato Si, or the educational support to poor and deserving children, or distribution of mosquito nets to combat malaria, or supporting the Health Centres and capacitating the Health Sisters, or child Health promotion in partnership with UNICEF, or organizing state level workshops on important themes, or bringing out a kit on Laudato Si and much more. I am extremely proud of being the President of SIGN as it continues to make timely and creative contributions to the society and especially the poorer sections of people. Indeed, Laudato Si and UN Sustainable Development Goals call every citizen of the world to a deeper reflection and subsequent action especially in today’s context of development which is desirable while maintaining the right balance and tempo. Unfortunately, the present day style of development that causes large-scale destruction to bio-diversity, deforestation, displacement of people, land alienation, exploitation of the poor, and pollution of water bodies is a major concern for humanity. The poor, probably, are affected in a big way leaving them the victims of the effect. These are acknowledged facts by world leaders across the globe. SIGN has been conducting many workshops to awaken people to the impending ecological crisis, climate change, the loss of bio-diversity, water, air and sound pollution and such which are threatening the very existence of the world. The Kit on Laudato Si discusses all these elaborately inspiring the readers to reflection and action. The cry today is for sustainable existence. In other words, every kind of development taken up for the progress of the world should have the stamp of sustainability. Need and not greed should govern the use of natural resources for development. I congratulate SIGN on bringing out its Annual Report 2016-17 and the Director and Staffs for their committed engagement in capacitating and awakening the rural folks towards quality life. Thanks to all the benefactors, well wishers and supporters of SIGN. Most Rev. Felix Toppo S.J. 4 Director’s Message Agriculture had been the mainstay for numerous households in rural Jharkhand for many decades. People happily engaged in agricultural activities, in spite of the various challenges, enjoying a mutual bond with land and nature. They cherished a soul feeling and an intimacy beyond modern day understanding. The joy of life was realized in tilling and toiling. Therefore, their festivals and celebrations too were centred on land and nature. The tall trees, thick forest cover, the falling and rising hillocks invited the rains on time. The rising sun signalled the farmer to the day’s work. The sharp plough made furrows in the fields to the rhythmic movement of the pair of cattle guided by the animated farmers. The field was ready then to bosom seeds to go through the process of rotting to become a harvest. Mr. Jambua Oraon from Khambia Kumba Toli village, Arangi panchayat, Ghaghra block and Gumla district belongs to those stocks of ‘lovers’ of land and nature. He did not know how to deal with the dry and lifeless piece of wasteland he had inherited from his forefathers. Even cattle would not dare to enter into the land for want of a blade of grass. He received an opportunity for training in KVK Hazaribag, organised by SIGN like hundreds of other farmers who underwent such trainings. He came back home and went to his land. He began a conversation with the land. In the process he generated a soul feeling and an intimate bonding with it. Now he began the tilling. The land said to him, ‘I am hard and strong’. He spoke to the land, ‘I too am hard and strong’. He let the pearls of his perspiration to fall on the soil. He carried on his shoulders water fetched from a low land well to wet the soil where fell the pearls of perspiration. It was a daily act of love; tireless and focussed. The miracle happened. With nothing and almost no help from anywhere he transformed the dry land into a green spread with plants, trees and all kinds of vegetation. He calls each of them his children born out of his wedlock with that dry piece of wasteland. A miracle of love! These kinds of farmers disappear into oblivion except for the candid acknowledgement from the locals around. Nonetheless, they leave an undeniable lesson to the world that true development happens in this bond of love with land and nature and not through programs designed in closed rooms without the smell of the soil. ‘All that glitters is not gold’. It is the lead casket that contained the image of Portia and not the gold and silver ones. Fr. S. Christu Das 5 ‘Food Self Reliance and Livelihood Resilience Practices, Through Integrated Livelihood Initiatives and NRM’ ‘Food Self Reliance and Livelihood Resilience Practices, Integrated Livelihood Initiative and NRM’ is being implemented in partnership with 9 partners. The major activities of the project are scientific training to interested farmers on agriculture and livelihood and empowering them to generate networks. The impacts of the project are visible in different ways such as food security, use of available local resources, availing the basic requirements either from government schemes or self initiatives, tie up among farmers, market linkages etc. Water scarcity has been the biggest concern for the farmers in the villages though it has not deterred their enthusiasm.
