The red-eyed, black-torsoed, Brood X (Roman numeral for 10) cicada adults are emerging from their nymph shells in the trillions after 17 years of growth underground in . Their wooing chorus, mistaken for telephone line buzzing, will be “lawnmower loud.” This weird 17-year life cycle is one of the ways these brilliant bugs have managed to escape their natural predators. Another is their emergence from the soil at dusk. Then, climbing to the highest point of the nearest tall tree to avoid all that wishes to eat them so they can mate, lay eggs (the next generation will come 17 years from now) and die. Their natural predators include ants, cats, dogs, and birds. Their exoskeletons are made of chitin—an amino sugar with a carbohydrate (glucose/ polysaccharide) that contains a strengthening nitrogen (amine) bond. Delicious and nutritious! This event seems to be something, straight out of a horror film. Scientists called Entomologists however, consider Brood X the signal of something right in the world despite the ravages of climate change, pollution and the loss of biodiversity. So, if you see it raining bugs from tall trees over the coming dog days of summer know that it could be the newborn nymphs looking to dive deep into the Earth to begin their 17 years of eating tree sap underground. Alternatively, it could be the now soil fertilizing, nitrogen-rich, body of an adult Brood X cicada that has beautifully fulfilled its precarious lifecycle. Nothing to fear, something to cheer. Seriously, it is all about that we refer to July 3 to August 11 in any given year, as “the dog days of summer.” These sultry hot days throughout history follow the rising of the star system known as , the Greater Dog. Sirius (sometimes called the Dog Star, or Big Dog in ) then rises in to view and is the brightest visible star anywhere on Earth.

Greek mythology describes Sirius as one of ’s hunting dogs. astrologers associated this period with mad dogs, bad luck, heat, lethargy, fever, war, disaster, drought, catastrophe and sudden . During this period, the star system of which Sirius is a part is in the same space as the . Actually, it rises and sets with the Sun. For this reason, the ancient Romans believed Sirius actually gave off additional heat making sunny days even hotter. Romans called these days: diēs caniculārēs, or “dog days.”

The summer heat during this period is simply due to the tilt of the Earth in the . The Sun’s rays hit us at a more direct angle over a longer daytime period giving us longer and hotter days. For this reason “the dog days of summer” refers to the 20 days before and 20 days after the alignment of Sirius with the Sun.
