Because of this tilt, the earth stores up heat and becomes hotter until mid-August when the cooling The Dog Days of Summer cycle begins.

According to the weatherman, the "Dog Days" of summer are here - the hot days of late summer that seem to drag on forever.

Lots of folks think the term "Dog Days of Summer" stems from the idea that it is the period of extended heat in the mid or late summer that sends dogs staying in the cool shade under a porch, or tree. A dog does play a role in the history of the term but it actually is a dog in the sky.

In ancient times, people imagined that the brightest stars formed images of animals like bears, bulls, lions and even dogs. These star groups are called and the is one that depicts a dog. Since ancient Romans believed that this star added more heat to the heat of the sun, these later days of summer are called the "Dog Days" of summer!

Modern astronomy has taught us that the hottest days of the year occur during these "Dog Days" because the earth is tilted more towards the sun. NSDA SAR DOG NEWS August 2016 Page 4

NSDA PODCASTS

This month I will be talking with Catherine Louis about scent-specicific area search.

Catherine is a member of Wake Canine Search and Rescue (www.wcsar.net) in North Carolina, where she has served both as a board member and president. Her duties have included maintaining a ‘Continuous Improvement’ focus on canine and team standards. She has been an air scent discriminating handler since 2002 and has formed a partnership with North Carolina National Weather Service to create and present a class to provide search responders with effective deployment methodologies that help maximize the probability of detection for canine search resources.

WHO DID YOU SAY WAS DRIVING?

A Wayne, West Virginia Walmart employee said a car that drove toward her in the parking lot, before colliding into a concrete pillar of the building, had a presumably unlicensed driver. When the car came to a halt, shoppers ran to the runaway car to make sure everyone was all right, only to find a dog in the driver's seat.

Once the car stopped, a second dog in the passenger seat of the car somehow managed to roll down a window after the crash, the woman said. The car crashed into the store at a slow speed and came to a rest. A Walmart employee said damage to the car and building was minimal. The dogs were not injured.

The owner of the car was paged to the front of the store. The owner said she had left the car running so the dogs would stay cool from the summer heat but they had other plans. The car was in good enough condition to drive away from the scene, witnesses said.

Since the dogs weren't available for comment, it's unclear how their cruise came about. CNN, TheWrap, fox5sandiego.com, UPI

BAKERSFIELDnow.com KIBBLES & BITS by Susan Bulanda

This month I have been asked to talk about the Standard Poodle and SAR. It is interesting that in the late 40’s and early 50’s a famous dog trainer, Blanche Saunders, made the Standard Poodle popular as her dog of choice for obedience training. You can still purchase her book “Training You to Train Your Dog” published in 1952 on the used book market. It was one of the first books I studied as a budding dog trainer in the late 50’s.

The Poodle is an interesting breed of dog that is often mislabeled as a French Poodle. Although the Poodle is the official breed of France, in reality the origin of the breed is questionable. Many believe that it originated in Germany as a water/gun dog. The name Poodle came from the German word “pudel” - meaning puddle. It is believed that the most common ancestor of the Poodle is the Barbet, that today is a very rare pointing breed. There has been a poodle like dog throughout Europe as far back as Emperor Augustus around 30 A.D. The breed comes in the common curly-type coat and a corded coat, similar to the Komondor.

Today, there are three recognized sizes of Poodles. The standard, which is at least 15 inches at the shoulder, the miniature, which is at least ten inches but less than 15 inches at the shoulder and the toy, which is under ten inches at the shoulder. For a while people were breeding “pocket” Poodles as well. Miniature, toy and pocket Poodles were all bred down from the Standard Poodle. The Poodle is known for its good nature, trainability, agility, and intelligence. Its coat is more like human hair, in that it grows long and does not shed twice a year like other dogs. Poodles lose their hair the same way that people do, a little at a time. Because of this Poodles have been mislabeled at hypoallergenic. However, they are not, since they do shed dander the same as other dogs and dander is what most people are allergic to.

There are three grooming styles that are acceptable for Poodles, the puppy clip, English saddle clip or the continental clip. The styles of clips originated due to the fact that the hair on Poodles grows long, and if they were not clipped, would weigh them down when they retrieved waterfowl. More hair was left on the dog’s joints to keep them warm in cold water, which may have inspired the fancy cuts of today.

For many years, people have used the Poodle as part of the fad of creating designer dogs, resulting in the “poo” mixes such as the cock-a-poo, schnoodle, peke-a-poo, labradooles and goldendooles, to name a few. I believe I have talked about designer dogs in a past issue of Kibbles and Bits, so I won’t go into it here in depth. Keep in mind that designer dogs are bred for the most part by puppy mills, back-yard breeders and pet owners. These dogs are not consistent in type, both mentally and physically and are not the result of well-bred, genetically or medically tested parents. In many cases, the designer dogs are often not a mix of the breeds that they are claimed to be. Because people are willing to pay as much or more for designer dogs than the cost of a well-bred purebred dog, the market is alive and well. NSDA SAR DOG NEWS August 2016 Page 12

Poodles are a surprising breed of dog in many the handler, can be prone to doing their work ways. In the mid-1970s, a man named John only if the handler knows what to do. For Suter raced a team of Standard Poodles in example, trick dogs are trained to respond to the Idiarod dog sled race. It has not been hidden signals, such as a slight twist of the done since. Poodles have been used as trick mouth, the movement of a finger or nod of a dogs, Seeing Eye dogs, and they excel in head. Poodles are very good at this, which is obedience competition. They are most why many old time circus acts used them. popular as a companion dog. However, this can be a detriment in SAR training if the handler is not careful. As for using them in SAR, they can do SAR work but they have two main drawbacks: one The Poodle does make a wonderful and is their coat. The Poodle coat is not easy to affectionate companion. Their various sizes keep clean or groom, matting easily. Their can accommodate all family situations and coat tends to hold in dirt, seeds and other members of the family. Even the Standard debris that dogs pick up in the field. The Poodle is not a large, bulky dog, but fine second drawback depends on the individual boned and delicate. The Standard Poodle dog, but by and large, Poodles are very rote should not weigh over 49 lbs., the Miniature in their performance. This is what makes about 26 lbs. and the Toy around 15 lbs. them an excellent competitive obedience dog. They will perform exactly as they are trained. They are less forgiving of mis-training and handler mistakes. For some Poodles, once they learn something, even if it is the wrong thing, it is difficult to re-train them to do the right thing. They are less likely to analyze a situation and adapt to accomplish the goal in the same manner that a working breed such as a German Shepherd would. However, they are very reliable in doing what they are taught.

What is nice about Poodles, is that they do not make the missing person feel threatened by their looks, even if the dog is large. People who are not fond of dogs or are frightened of dogs are less likely to feel upset being found by a Poodle than a GSD, Doberman or other working breeds. Poodles make excellent therapy dogs and are great with children. Because Poodles are extremely sensitive and in tune to their owner’s moods, a handler must be aware of how their feelings affect their dog, especially during training. Poodles are very good at reading body language. Because they prefer to look for guidance from NSDA SAR DOG NEWS August 2016 Page 13
