Standards: Standard - SS8H11 Evaluate the role of Georgia in the modern . a. Explain Georgia’s response to Brown v. Board of Education including the 1956 state flag & the Sibley Commission. b. Describe the role of individuals (Martin Luther Jr. and ), groups (SNCC and SCLC), and events ( and the on Washington) in the Civil Rights Movement.

Objective: By completing the following activities students will be able to explain the decision in the Brown v. Board of Education case and Georgia’s reaction to it. They will also be able to describe the roles of Dr. King, Representative Lewis, SCLC and SNCC and be able to explain the importance of the Albany Movement and the March on Washington.

Vocabulary: Civil Rights, Brown v. Board, Sibley Commission, MLK, SNCC, and SCLC. Essential Questions: What was Georgia’s response to Brown v. Board of Education, the 1956 state flag, and the Sibley Commission? What was the role of people such as Martin Luther King, Jr. and John Lewis during the Civil Rights movement? Who were the groups SNCC and SCLC and what did they stand for? What happened during the Albany Movement and the March on Washington?

Brainteaser: Students will complete the unit 9 Warm-Up on Google Classroom.

Teaching Point (Whole Group): Students will listen to the unit 9 lesson by Mrs. Collins on YouTube explaining the Civil Rights Movement including the state flag, Martin Luther King, Brown v. Board of Education, the Sibley Commission, and the March on Washington. At this time students will use the attached organizers in Google classroom to take notes, however, if the student is unable to print the organizer, he or she can take notes on a regular sheet of paper. If it is easier, the students can print the PowerPoint and highlight the key facts as I speak about them in the video.

Closure: “What stuck with you today?” (students will answer this question by responding on Google Classroom regarding things that were either interesting, confusing, or what they liked about the lesson) Help Session Hours: Friday’s 10:00-12:00
