Rouse ABSTRACT The Nashville Civil Rights Movement was one of the most dynamic local movements of the early 1960s, producing the most capable student leaders of the period 1960 to 1965. Despite such a feat, the historical record has largely overlooked this phenomenon. What circumstances allowed Nashville to produce such a dynamic movement whose youth leadership of John Lewis, Diane Nash, Bernard LaFayette, and James Bevel had no parallel? How was this small cadre able to influence movement developments on local and a national level? In order to address these critical research questions, standard historical methods of inquiry will be employed. These include the use of secondary sources, primarily Civil Rights Movement histories and memoirs, scholarly articles, and dissertations and theses. The primary sources used include public lectures, articles from various periodicals, extant interviews, numerous manuscript collections, and a variety of audio and video recordings. No original interviews were conducted because of the availability of extensive high quality interviews. This dissertation will demonstrate that the Nashville Movement evolved out of the formation of independent Black churches and college that over time became the primary sites of resistance to racial discrimination, starting in the Nineteenth Century. By the late 1950s, Nashville’s Black college attracted the students who became the driving force of a local movement that quickly established itself at the forefront of the Civil Rights Movement. Nashville’s forefront status was due to an intentional leadership training program based upon nonviolence. As a result of the training, leaders had a profound impact upon nearly every major movement development up to 1965, including the sit-ins, the Freedom Rides, the March on Washington, the birth of SNCC, the emergence of Black Power, the direction of the SCLC after 1962, the thinking of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Birmingham campaign, and the Selma voting rights campaign. In addition, the Nashville activists helped eliminate fear as an obstacle to Black freedom. These activists also revealed new relationship dynamics between students and adults and merged nonviolent direct action with voter registration, a combination considered incompatible. The patient may be reasonably healthy, but may have some minor problems because of a steady diet of dated Martin Luther King, Selma, Birmingham, and Mississippi sandwiches. They are all good eats, but feasting on too many sandwiches everyday is not a balanced diet. And what the historiography of the Civil Rights Movement needs is more balance. To be sure, great strides have been made in terms of the literature published over the last fifteen to twenty years. Many more African American and female scholars have published superb anthologies and monographs about this era. We have also seen a record of scholarship less focused on the “great men” of the movement, resulting in landmark work by Aldon Morris, Charles Payne, and John Dittmer and others who shifted our gaze toward more community-based activism. This dissertation is partly a product of the trend inaugurated by Morris’ classic Origins of the Civil Rights Movement, one of the first pieces of scholarship to expose the significance of the Nashville Movement as an important “movement center” and as a place where the phenomenon of nonviolence-based intentional leadership development emerged. Using Nashville as one example, Morris revealed the significance of the movement’s origins, planning, decision-making, and execution at the local level, all accentuated by relationships between Black ministers and resources provided by local churches and other social institutions. Almost overnight, our scholarly gaze shifted from a top-down, nationally-driven interpretation of the Movement to one local in nature. This dissertation is not a traditional study of a local civil rights movement. While my interest in Nashville is partly inspired by the work of Aldon

I was glad to see Title IX passed because I remember my daughter, she and I used to play basketball together when she was young. She was very good, but she couldn't play after she got to high school because that's how it was at that time. Yeah. But anyway, my little son was pretty good. I was just thinking yesterday, I guess it was, because he called me from up in Kentucky. I was thinking about it when he was five years old. I used to take my five-year-old and my ten-year-old to play three-person basketball with the folks in the neighborhood.

Du Bois at the center: from science, civil rights movement, to Black Lives Matter Aldon Morris Abstract I am honoured to present the 2016 British Journal of Sociology Annual Lecture at the London School of Economics. My lecture is based on ideas derived from my new book, The Scholar Denied: W.E.B. Du Bois and the Birth of Modern Sociology. In this essay I make three arguments. First, W.E.B. Du Bois and his Atlanta School of Sociology pioneered scientific sociology in the United States. Second, Du Bois pioneered a public sociology that creatively combined sociology and activism. Finally, Du Bois pioneered a politically engaged social science relevant for contemporary political struggles including the contemporary Black Lives Mat- ter movement. Keywords: W. E. B. The first school of American scientific sociology was founded by a black professor located in a small, economically poor, racially segregated black university. At the dawn of the twentieth century – from 1898 to 1910 – the black sociologist, and activist, W.E.B. Du Bois, developed the first scientific school of sociology at a historic black school, Atlanta University. It is a monumental claim to argue Du Bois developed the first scientific school of sociology in America. Indeed, my purpose in writing The Scholar Denied was to shift our understanding of the founding, over a hundred years ago, of one of the social sciences in America.

Founded in 1975, NABJ represents the quintessential post-Civil Rights organization, in that it was established following the end of the struggle for freedom rights. This piece argues that NABJ, like many other advocacy organizations, has succumbed to incorporation. Once a fierce critic of institutional racism inside and outside the newsroom, NABJ has slowly narrowed its advocacy focus to the issue of newsroom diversity. In doing so, NABJ, this piece argues, has rendered itself useless to the larger black public sphere, serving only the needs of middle-class African Americans seeking jobs within the mainstream press. Moreover, as the organization has aged, NABJ has taken an increasing amount of money from the very news organizations it seeks to critique. Additionally, this study introduces a specific method of inquiry known as diagnostic journalism. Inspired in part by the television show, House MD, diagnostic journalism emphasizes historiography, participant observation and autoethnography in lieu of interviewing.

But many of you out there know when you have back problems what it's like, and over the last three or four weeks, I've had a serious back problem, and so that's why I'm sitting down and not standing up because usually I'm standing up and I'm speaking out. I was nine before I was seven. I was actually born in Cambridge, Mass, which is not very much a working-class city these days unless you have a million or a million and a half dollars for a house or an apartment. But I grew up part of my time in Somerville, Mass, and about six years old. Somerville, by the way, used to be an Italian and Irish working-class suburb of Boston. There were a few black folks there. There were a few Puerto Ricans there, but by and large, it was an ethnic neighborhood and a poor one at that. So, you might say, "Well, how did this white boy get into the civil rights movement?How did this white boy get involved?" Well, I didn't come from an intellectual family or a college family.
