Welcome We are delighted to welcome PRESTON GRASSHOPERS back to Park.

Club History Preston Grasshoppers were founded in 1869 and are one of the oldest clubs in the North West of . They are not quite as old as the original Liverpool of Liverpool St. Helens (1857), Manchester (1860) or Sale (1861), but well ahead of New (1875), (1877), Waterloo (1882), Vale of Lune (1900), Kendal (1905), Fylde (1919), and Sedgley Park (1932) in the matter of years. For comparison, the oldest clubs in the North-East are RFC (1863), Durham City (1872) and Percy Park (1872). On the 28th September 1869 a meeting was held at the Bull Hotel, Preston at which the following resolution was passed: ‘That a club be at once formed in Preston to play football with the Rugby Rules of the game but without hacking and that the club be called ‘The Preston Grasshoppers.’

Tynedale v Preston Grasshoppers The two clubs first met in season 1979/80 and have played 24 times since, with Tynedale winning 14 matches, to Grasshoppers’ 10 wins. In the 1980’s Tynedale won 6 of the 9 matches played – then Grasshoppers won 3 consecutive matches. Since then the last dozen matches between the clubs have resulted in the following scores:-

18 Jan 2003 Tynedale 8 Grasshoppers 26 1 March 2003 Grasshoppers 19 Tynedale 29 22 Nov. 2003 Grasshoppers 14 Tynedale 16 (After Tynedale had stopped off at Carlisle to watch England win the World Cup that morning!) 17 Jan 2004 Tynedale 24 Grasshoppers 0 26 Nov 2005 Tynedale 20 Grasshoppers 17 18 Mar 2006 Grasshoppers 27 Tynedale 24 11 Nov 2006 Tynedale 34 Grasshoppers 8 17 Mar 2007 Grasshoppers 22 Tynedale 10 15 Dec 2007 Grasshoppers 15 Tynedale 40 12 April 2008 Tynedale 37 Grasshoppers 7 24 Oct 2015 Tynedale 20 Grasshoppers 18 13 Feb 2016 Grasshoppers 39 Tynedale 16 Four wins for Grasshoppers, eight for Tynedale. Match Report: Caldy 56 v 13 Tynedale, Sat 15th October. A disappointing visit to Caldy who beat us 56-13 to take them to the top of the table. Injuries and other absences prevented Tynedale from fielding their strongest team but they put everything into the game as evidenced by seven of our players having to leave the field for injury and us ending the game with only 13 on the pitch. Although possib ly not the most serious of the injuries, Henry Hadfield had to attend the local hospital for stitches to head cuts. The game started in sunshine but the clouds soon came over as Caldy's set scrum showed its power repeatedly delivering ball. The three first half tries came from such scrums within Tyne's 22. in the second half Tynedale coped much better with the Caldy scrum and a try by Jamie Blamire brou ght us to within one score and some hope that if we could get enough of the ball we had a good chance of bringing home one or more points. Alas it was not to be and Caldy romped home in the last quarter for a half ton. Team: 1 Richie Elliott, 2 Jamie Blamire, 3 Ben Haigh, 4 Archie Erskine, 5 Graeme Dunn, 6 Max Davies, 7 Joe Mills, 8 Scott Powell, 9 Jack Outson, 10 Dan Taylor, 11 Henry Hadfie ld, 12 Jamie Dixon, 13 Jack Harrison, 14 Oli Walker, 15 Rob Parker. Replacements: Tom King, Colin Scullion, Tom Schofield, Sam Gaff, Rory Dixon. Tim Tatman Membership Secretary

The Rugby Paper's match report Tynedale were competitive for 50 minutes then collapsed against an impressive Caldy. Two first half tries from and one at the end of the half by evergreen scrum half John Broxton together with a further five points from the boot of Rhys Hayes kept the scoreboard ticking over for the home side. Rob Parker kicked a couple of penalties for the visitors to leave the half time score at a respectable 21-6. Energised Tynedale scored shortly after the restart through hooker Jamie Blamire to put the visitors close at 21-13. A ten minute period of pressure on the Caldy line should have resulte d in a couple more scores for Tynedale but the tenacious defence held out and from that point Tynedale were in trouble. A penalty by Hayes was added to through a penalty try in the 65th minute. And then in quick succession a further four tries from Hayes, Jack Collister, Forbes Edward and Josiah Dickinson left the final score Caldy 56 Tynedale 13. Caldy had too much up front and out wide for a game Tyn edale side who never stopped trying but were eventually out muscled and out thought by the impressive home side. 66178 Preston Progr Insert.qxp_A5(P) 16pp INNER 20/10/2016 11:02 Page 3

Calling all Centurions Our Centurions team (the 3rd selected XV) is in need of more players to strengthen the player pool and compete successfully in the full programme of league and cup fixtures. To ensure competitive games the Centurions usually play against the 2nd teams of other local clubs and the corresponding 3rd teams of neighbours and Darlington Mowden Park. The ethos of the Centurions is to provide a decent game with less training commitments than the 1st and Raiders teams coupled with a strong social element. Centurions are typically a broad mix; experienced players who may have played at a higher level who now want to play a more social type rugby and younger players including recent colts who are still developing their rugby skills and aspire to Raiders and beyond. If this appeals to you then please get in touch as soon as possible. As with all teams at this level, personnel change from time to time and currently the Centurions would like to find someone who can take on the role of team captain in the traditional mould i.e. playing and captaining the team on a Saturday, organising players and arrangements for each match and being the contact point for the rugby management committee. If you think this could be you, or you know someone else, again please get in touch. Contact Ian Lewis, Senior Vice President, on 0743 656 0452

Ball Girls & Boys We are grateful to the Youth Rugby section of the club for providing players for each 1st XV home match this season. Thank you to the U11’s for their help today.

WERE ARE THEY NOW? In the 2007/08 season when the Tynedale 1stXV gained promotion to National One (level 3) the squad contained a number of outstanding players. Others joined later. Some of those players have moved on, including several who were dual-registered with the Falcons. Some stayed with t he Newcastle club whilst others have since joined other clubs in the Championship or Premiership. A number have gained National honours. 66178 Preston Progr Insert.qxp_A5(P) 16pp INNER 20/10/2016 11:02 Page 5
