Colin Gibbs, President of Tewit Youth Band and long time supporter of Harrogate Rugby Club was awarded a British Empire Medal in this year’s Queen’s Honours List. He dedicated the award to all the members of Tewit Youth Band, past and present, plus all the musical directors. He paid tribute to all the parents, sponsors and patrons who have supported the band through thick and thin over many years. Colin has done so much to support and encourage young musical talent in Harrogate and steered the Tewit Youth Band to success in the National Brass Band Championships. He has been involved with the band for 39 years and President for 29 years. On Saturday 12th December 2015 at the HRUFC Touchline Internationals annual Christmas Lunch a very special part of the proceedings was the presentation to Colin Gibbs of a medal for his army service during the Suez Crisis in 1956. Colin was one of many service men whose contribution to this incident was not officially recognised at the time. No League Rugby in 2020/2021 Due to Coronavirus The following announcement appeared on the club website in October 2020: ‘Following the ballot of all clubs, which was against a 15-match league season (the vote was 11-5 against in National One alone), the NCA executive met on Monday 19th October 2020 and agreed that due to potential local lockdowns, player infection and travel restrictions, it would be difficult to operate a meaningful season. One option being considered, as has been reported, is a cup competition specifically for the National League clubs, with finals at prestige locations. “This would give players and spectators incentives, but also encourage commercial partners to remain involved throughout the second half of the season,” said Inverdale. Full details can be found on the NCA website. Xmas Raffle The March 2020 lockdown ended the income we used to make from the Saturday Raffles at 1st Team home games. This makes the 2020 Christmas Hamper Raffle even more important than normal to raise much needed funds for the club. There will be five £1 tickets in a book so it only needs each member to sell two books @ £10 to boost our funds by £4,000. The Prize Hampers will be on display at the club from early December when tickets will also be available. Lucy Barnett has already started to put her fabulous hampers together and we’ll be really grateful for any donated items to make them even better than normal. Please bring your donations to the club on any weekday or Sunday morning. Thanks very much for your help. Jo Finnegan

4 HRUFC Golf Day 2010 88 golfers in teams of four competed for the ‘Slade Trophy’ in a Stableford Competition at Oakdale Golf Club on 1st September 2010. As ever, the course was in excellent condition and this year the weather was ideal. The teams were competing for the Frank Slade Trophy – first played for in 1925. The Trophy, originally named the ‘Harrogate Old Boys RUFC Golf Challenge Bowl’, was donated to the Club by Frank Slade in that year. Doug Kendall (Centre), the organiser of the Golf Day has guest speaker Martin Fish sitting on his left. The winners of the Trophy and the first prize with 95 points (two scores from four to count) was the team from Oakdale Golf Club made up of Club Captain Charles Birchall, Vice Captain Phil Ireland, Secretary Mike Cross and 2008 Captain Peter Bell. In second place with 93 points was team ‘Omni Design’ David Harvey, Iain Esplyn, David Gill and John Langley(). The team representing Black Sheep Brewery were in third place with 93 points. Their team was made up of David Croft, Mike Kearnall(Oakdale), Simon Midgeley and Richard Metcalfe (Pontefract). Just missing out in fourth place with 93 was Howard Illingworth’s team from Northern Energy. Saturday 4/9/2010 Harrogate 39 - 17 Nuneaton The photo shows action from the first game of the 2010/2011 season against Nuneaton when Harrogate won 39 - 17. The players from left to right are; Tim Heaton, Ed Smithies, James Rothwell, Jamie Broadley (with the ball) and Kyle Dench. Record Score Harrogate 99 - 7 On Saturday 30th October 2010 Harrogate defeated Rugby Lions by a club record score. Bill Barrack wrote the following match report: Although, Harrogate comprehensively outplayed a young Rugby side, the visitors tried to compete throughout the game. Harrogate ran through their range of attacking moves and strong tackling snuffed out Rugby’s occasional but spirited counter attacks. The dynamic Tim Heaton, who’d been switched to No.8, scored the opening try after four minutes and this was shortly followed by another from his back row colleague, Alex Rieder, after a powerful run from deep. Andy Rock, in his first game for over a year, made a half break from the wing before delivering a scoring reverse pass to Jamie Broadley.

6 A Rugby defensive mistake then led to loose ball which Broadley quickly snapped up to score a 30 metre try and earn Harrogate a bonus point after 16 minutes. Rob Almond got the next try after a sniping Tom Bugge run created space for him in the corner. Another Harrogate try seemed inevitable but a handling error spilled the ball and Rugby’s Gareth Clarke made a midfield break which was well supported for a try by their ex Harrogate winger, Ian Renard. Alex Stajka’s conversion made it 31-7. Rock then again created space for Broadley’s 3rd try who then took his turn at setting up an Ed Smithies try. Concerted driving mauls on the Rugby line then resulted in a Jake Brady try to make it 52-7 at the interval. From the restart, Rieder snapped up a loose ball and slipped it to replacement centre, Sam Bottomley, who raced 40 metres to score. Almond had taken over the place kicking duties and landed the first of what was to be seven successful conversions, some from very wide out. Replacement flanker, Chris Wilson, scored the next try before another Bugge break led to yet another Almond try. Brady’s second try followed sustained forward pressure and resulted in a minor dust-up between the two packs. Rugby’s “never say die” spirit led to a good combined attack but Harrogate turned over possession in their own 22 and a counter attack led to another Smithies try. Another attack from deep led to a converted Kyle Dench try and, in the last move of the match, another break out from defence led to Bottomley scoring in the corner. Almond’s narrowly missed conversion spoiled his 100% kicking record and prevented Harrogate from hitting the ton.
