Singapore’s green infrastructure has grown with more parks, green spaces and Nature Ways. Ecological resilience has been strengthened through sustained conservation efforts and the establishment of Nature Parks and reserves. Significant efforts have also been made to ensure that all residents can gain access to our parks and gardens. The greening of Singapore is important in creating a quality living environment, but it is not a task that NParks can undertake alone. It is a constant work in progress that involves people from all walks of life, coming together with a shared vision – and conviction that green matters – to continue shaping Singapore into a City in a Garden. 04 GREEN MATTERS NPARKS ANNUAL REPORT 2015/16 05 CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE “We have taken to heart the role of greenery as a social equaliser, moving beyond convenience and proximity of our green spaces to ensure accessibility for all. ” As a nation, our challenge for Beyond SG50 is to improve as a social equaliser, moving beyond convenience and liveability for all Singaporeans. At the National Parks proximity of our green spaces to ensure accessibility for Board (NParks), our role in this mission is clear – to all. We opened an inclusive playground at Bishan-Ang develop our City in a Garden in a sustainable and Mo Kio Park last year, enabling children with special inclusive manner. Be it streetscapes or parks and needs to develop age-appropriate social, communication, gardens, our green spaces are a national asset that motor and cognitive skills while playing with their peers. -

This was higher than the 7,022 persons per square kilometer in 2009. Age Profile In 2010, the proportion of elderly aged 65 years and over was highest among Singapore residents staying in Outram, Downtown Core, Rochor, Queenstown and Bukit Merah planning areas1 (15 - 19 per cent) (Map 1). The proportion of elderly was lowest among Singapore residents staying in Punggol (4.8 per cent). Highest Qualification Attained In 2010, the proportion with at least post-secondary qualification was highest among Singapore residents staying in the Singapore River planning area (86 per cent), Tanglin (85 per cent) and Newton (84 per cent) (Map 2). -

Steinberg2,12 Received: 11 October 2015 While many studies of coral bleaching report on broad, regional scale responses, fewer examine Accepted: 06 January 2016 variation in susceptibility among coral taxa and changes in community structure, before, during and Published: 15 February 2016 after bleaching on individual reefs. Here we report in detail on the response to bleaching by a coral community on a highly disturbed reef site south of mainland Singapore before, during and after a major thermal anomaly in 2010. To estimate the capacity for resistance to thermal stress, we report on: a) overall bleaching severity during and after the event, b) differences in bleaching susceptibility among taxa during the event, and c) changes in coral community structure one year before and after bleaching. Approximately two thirds of colonies bleached, however, post-bleaching recovery was quite rapid and, importantly, coral taxa that are usually highly susceptible were relatively unaffected. Although total coral cover declined, there was no significant change in coral taxonomic community structure before and after bleaching. Several factors may have contributed to the overall high resistance of corals at this site including Symbiodinium affiliation, turbidity and heterotrophy. Our results suggest that, despite experiencing chronic anthropogenic disturbances, turbid shallow reef communities may be remarkably resilient to acute thermal stress. -

Todd1 Published: xx xx xxxx The removal of macroalgal biomass is critical to the health of coral reef ecosystems. Previous studies on relatively intact reefs with diverse and abundant fish communities have quantified rapid removal of macroalgae by herbivorous fishes, yet how these findings relate to degraded reef systems where fish diversity and abundance are markedly lower and algal biomass substantially higher, is unclear. We surveyed roving herbivorous fish communities and quantified their capacity to remove the dominant macroalga Sargassum ilicifolium on seven reefs in Singapore; a heavily degraded urbanized reef system. The diversity and abundance of herbivorous fishes was extremely low, with eight species and a mean abundance ~1.1 individuals 60 m−2 recorded across reefs. Consumption of S. ilicifolium varied with distance from Singapore’s main port with consumption being 3- to 17-fold higher on reefs furthest from the port (Pulau Satumu: 4.18 g h−1; Kusu Island: 2.38 g h−1) than reefs closer to the port (0.35–0.78 g h−1). Video observations revealed a single species, Siganus virgatus, was almost solely responsible for removing S. ilicifolium biomass, accounting for 83% of the mass-standardized bites. Despite low herbivore diversity and intense urbanization, macroalgal removal by fishes on some Singaporean reefs was directly comparable to rates reported for other inshore Indo-Pacific reefs. -

Between September 2009 and August 2010, 29 reefs among Singapore’s Southern Islands were surveyed (total area = 87 515 m2). Both intertidal and subtidal zones were included, i.e. from shore to the edge of the upper reef slope (depths = 1 to 6 m). A total of 59 clams (but no juveniles) were found, resulting in a contemporary density of 0.067 per 100 m2. Only 2 spe- cies, Tridacna crocea and T. squamosa, were encountered, compared to the 4 species recorded his- torically. The genetic relatedness among individuals from these 2 species was examined using cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI). Higher levels of polymorphism and genetic diversity were observed among T. crocea; both were less pronounced in the T. squamosa population, where a sin- gle haplotype was present in half of the individuals. The reef conditions in Singapore, especially the lack of suitable substrate and high turbidity, create a poor environment for giant clam repro- duction and recruitment. -
