Frequently Asked Questions

Surgeries are referring patients we are unable to treat as they fall outside of Minor Ailment Scheme?

 Refer back to practice via a consultation/referral form explaining why the patient has been referred back.  Remember to claim the consultation fee.

Can I approach practices and explain the scheme?

 Yes, working with practices would benefit the patients.

Can the counter staff run the MAS?

 Yes. This service has been designed to be delivered by counter staff and technicians under the supervision of the accredited pharmacist.

Do patients have to be taken into a consultation room to provide the service?

 No, unless the patient requests a private consultation.

Does the pharmacist have to complete Pharmoutcomes?

 No, any trained member of staff can complete Pharmoutcomes.

Do we have to give patients the MAS patient evaluation survey?

 Yes, this enables Cumbria LPC to feedback the information to Cumbria CCG regarding patient’s thoughts about the service.

Can locums provide the service?

 If you are employing a locum please confirm they have completed the CPPE minor ailment pack and CPPE Declaration of Competence. This will ensure that there is no loss in service provision.

Do we have to send the consultation/referral form back with every urgent and non-urgent referral?

 Yes, copy the referral form and hand to the patient so they can take to the practice. The form helps indicates to the practice why the patient has been referred via the MAS.

Do I have to phone the practice if we are referring a patient for an urgent appointment?

 Yes, this ensures that the practices are aware that you think that the patient needs to be seen urgently. The practice can then follow up if the patient does not attend.

Do you have to label the medication that is given to patients?

 Yes  When supplying the medication an entry onto the patient’s Patient Medication Record (PMR) must be made and the product labelled as “Supplied under the NHS Minor Ailments Scheme.”

Can we treat a temporary resident?

 No, due to limited funding only patients registered with a GP practice in Copeland, Furness and South Lakes are able to be treated via the MAS at the moment.

If a patient has a pre-payment certificate do they have to pay?

 No

If a patient lives in another Cumbrian locality that provides the MAS service can our pharmacy supply?

 Yes as long as the patient can confirm the surgery. Please refer to the list of GP surgeries on pages 3 & 4.

Can a patient that is registered with a Cumbria GP practice and lives out of the area access the MAS in a Lancashire pharmacy?

 No. Cumbria LPC has only been commissioned to offer the service within Cumbrian pharmacies.
