Dear Customer, Murray Perahia’s eagerly awaited debut on Deutsche Grammophon is released this month: a welcome addition to his Bach discography, this time in the form of the French Suites. It’s hard to believe it is now seven years since his last Bach recording for Sony and nearly twenty years since he gave us the English Suites. We have waxed lyrical about Perahia here in the past, so won’t bore you too much this time, but urge you not to miss this new issue! (You also may be interested to know that Sony’s superb luxury 40 anniversary boxset of his recordings is still available at £129.95 (67CD + 5DVD) and would make a wonderful gift for any piano lover). Two top-flight mezzos also have new recitals for us - Elina Garanca in big diva bel canto repertoire on a disc entitled ‘Revive’ (DG, p.3) and Joyce DiDonato in a slightly more personal project labelled ‘War and Peace’ (Erato, p.4). Featuring baroque arias by Handel, Purcell and others, DiDonato has big ambitions for her disc. Planned since the Paris terrorist attacks in 2015, her aim is ‘to steer conversation and discourse… to help all of us find peace in our lives in a dynamic way…’. Bold sentiments indeed, but perhaps using her status and profile to help raise awareness and encourage dialogue is something to be applauded and not dismissed too quickly. Other releases to highlight include The Dunedin Consort’s brand new recording of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio (our Disc of the Month - see below), Sir Andrew Davis’s new ‘concert edition’ of Handel’s Messiah (apparently calling for ‘moments of drama, pathos and, even, sometimes whimsicality’ - Chandos, p.9), the next instalment in Naxos’s Ring Cycle (Die Walkure, p.5) and a wonderful new recording of Liszt’s Piano Sonata by Peter Uppard (Green Label, p.9). A longtime professor of piano at the Royal Academy of Music, Uppard’s career has largely been kept out of the limelight, but it is worth knowing that The Times described him as ‘a vintage claret worth watching’ after his debut recital at the Wigmore Hall, and that both Sir Charles Mackerras and Bryce Morrison were full of praise for this recording when it was first made. A quick mention of new special offers, this month including Chandos, Opus Arte DVD & Blu-ray, Grand Piano, Gimell and Channel Classics. Don’t forget everything we still have running from last month, including the complete catalogues of Hyperion and Arthaus DVD & Blu-ray, plus our big Autumn Boxset Sale (running until Christmas). Information on last posting dates and Christmas closing times etc will be published next month (due 3 December). The combined Dunedin forces achieve the excitement of Gardiner without his over- driven, over-regimented sound; the honest earthiness of Harnoncourt without his often exasperating eccentricities of tone, shaping and tempi; the gentle introspection of Herreweghe without his tendency to smooth over the works more dazzling features. There’s certainly no shortage of thrills in the trumpet- dominated works, with full-throated singing aplenty and a resplendent tutti sound. In cantata 4, the horns bray magnificently when necessary, most memorably in the closing chorale chorus, while the magnificent bass aria in the first cantata (‘Grosser Herr, o starker König’), robustly sung by Matthew Brook, is a highpoint, with splendid yet dancelike support.” Mark Audus, Europadisc 2 PRIORITY NEW RELEASES DG and Decca Bach, JS Pergolesi The French Suites Adirano in Siria Perahia Fagioli, Basso, Mynenko, £16.50 Capella Cracovienses, DG 479 6565 (2CD) Adamus £22.95 Decca 483 0004 (3CD) Revive Mozart Arias by Verdi, Piano Concertos 17 & 25 Massenet, Mascagni, Uchida, Cleveland Cilea, Berlioz etc Orchestra Garanca, R Abbado £12.50 £11.50 Decca 483 0716 DG 479 5937 available at £11.50 until 25 November 2016 Also available from DG and Decca Decca 483 0968 Winter Christmas Recording from Voces8 avaliable at £11.50 until 25/11 Voces8 £12.50 DG 481 4624 Malena New Sicilian & Neapolitan Songs avail at £11.50 until 25/11 Alagna;Avital;Radulovic £12.50 Decca 572 4215 Romanza 20th Anniversary Edition of the famous album from Andrea Bocelli Bocelli £11.50 DG 482 2971 Berliner Philharmoniker Christmas Album avail at £11.50 until 25/11 Abbado;Bychkov;Karajan etc £12.50 Decca 483 0972 Christmas with Pavarotti Traditional and modern favourites Domingo;Carreras;Clapton etc £11.50 Decca 483 0000 Mozart 225 The New Complete Edition 200CD avail at £298.95 until 25/11 Various £349.95 Decca 483 1050 Mozart The Singles - 66 Classic Tracks 3CD Bohm;Davis;Gardiner;Levine;Marriner etc £16.95 FOUR NEW BOX SETS Rostropovich Chopin Complete Recordings The Complete Edition on DG, Decca and (deluxe inc 100pp book) Philips Argerich, Trifonov, £74.95 Ashkenazy, Lisiecki etc DG 479 6789 (37CD) £74.95 DG 479 6555 (20CD + 1DVD) Shaping the Dvorak Century vol.1 Symphonies, Symphonic 1900-1949: An Poems, Requiem, Overview of the C20 Overtures etc Kertesz £84.95 DG 483 0458 (28CD) £43.95 available at £74.95 until Decca 483 0744 25/11 (9CD + 1 Blu-ray Audio) 3 PRIORITY NEW RELEASES Warner Classics and Erato In War and Peace Jubilo Arias by Handel, Leo, Trumpet works by Bach, Purcell, Jommelli etc Corelli, Torelli & Fasch DiDonato, Il Pomo Balsom d’Oro, Emelyanychev £10.95 £10.95 9029 592465 9029 592846 ltd edition deluxe version also available 9029 592511 £10.95 Oh Boy! • Final Dissertation Document
Abstract Title of Dissertation: INFLUENCES AND TRANSFORMATIONS: 19TH- CENTURY SOLO AND COLLABORATIVE PIANO REPERTOIRE Miori Sugiyama, Doctor of Musical Arts, 2012 Dissertation Directed by: Professor Rita Sloan School of Music, Piano Division This dissertation is an exploration of the inter-relationships of genres in the collaborative piano repertoire, particularly in music of the 19th century, an especially important period for collaborative piano repertoire. During this time, much of the repertoire gave equal importance to the piano in duo and ensemble repertoire. Starting with Schubert, and becoming more apparent with the development of the German lied, the piano became a more integral part of any composition, the piano part being no longer simplistic but rather a collaborative partner with its own voice. Mendelssohn transformed the genre of lieder by writing them, without their words, for solo piano. In addition to creating some of the greatest and most representative lieder in the Romantic period, composers such as Schumann, Brahms, and Strauss continued the evolution of the sonata by writing works that were more technically demanding on the performer, musically innovative, and structurally still evolving. In the case of Chopin who wrote mostly piano works, a major influence came from the world of opera, particularly the Bel Canto style. In exploring two specific genres, vocal and instrumental piano works by these composers; it is fascinating to see how one genre translates to another genre. This was especially true in the vocal and instrumental works by Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Chopin, and Strauss. All of these composers, with the exception of Chopin, contributed equally to both the song and sonata genres.

The Throne Vision of Revelation 4 within the Context of Enochic and Merkavah Texts Introduction: Apocalypticism and Mysticism as Contested Categories The boundaries between apocalypticism and mysticism often appear unclear or blurred. This is not only due to the observation of mystical elements in apo- calyptic texts and of revelatory experiences within the context of mystical religion. It is, even more so, due to the fact that the two terms are scholarly categories subject to definition, and depending on their respective definitions, the group of texts or textual elements attributed to each category varies con- siderably. Furthermore, both terms have a long history of reception in Christian theology and biblical exegesis, and both have been intensely rejected by certain theological traditions.

  • Erdington Abbey 1850-1876-2001
Erdington Abbey 1850-1876-2001 Michael Hodgetts Benedictine History Symposium 2001 ERDINGTON ABBEY, 1850-1876-2001 Michael Hodgetts From 1876 until 1922, the arch-abbey of Beuron in Württemberg had a daughter-house in England at Erdington, four and a half miles north-east of Birmingham. The parish is still universally known as ‘the Abbey’, although it has been served by Redemptorists since 1922 and the claustral buildings were sold to a local school in 1994. The church itself celebrated its one hundred and fiftieth anniversary on 11 June last year: it was built by a wealthy Tractarian convert, Daniel Henry Haigh, on whose retirement in 1876 it was taken over by the Benedictines from Beuron. My parents were married there in 1934, and I have known it since 1942. So I was delighted when Abbot Scott asked me to mark the anniversary by a contribution to this Symposium. Until the 19th century, Erdington was merely a hamlet in the huge medieval parish of Aston, which included all the countryside between Birmingham and Sutton Coldfield, seven miles to the north-east and for several miles to the east as well. There had been recusant gentry within three or four miles, but not in Erdington itself. About 1690 Andrew Bromwich established a Masshouse at (Old) Oscott, now known as Maryvale, three miles north-west, in Handsworth parish, which, like Erdington, is now a suburb of Birmingham. Even in 1767, however, only two Papists were reported in the whole of Aston parish, though in Sutton Coldfield there were thirty, and in Birmingham and Edg-baston, on the far side of it, there were well over three hundred.

He was 96 years old when he passed away this April. Prof. Piltz loved teaching, and in 1959 joined the UBC Department of Music — as the School of Music was then known. As Professor of Viola, he mentored several generations of strings musicians who have gone on to long and successful careers in orchestras and as soloists in North America, Europe, and all over the world. He founded and directed the UBC Symphony Orchestra from 1959–1970 and also helped found the Vancouver Society for Early Music — now known as Early Music Vancouver — in 1969.
