It is the first species of Megasporaceae to be discovered on the islands and only the seventh to be reported from South America. It is distinguished from other species of Aspicilia by the unusual secondary metabolite chemistry (hypostictic acid) and molecular sequence data. The collections of the new species support two lichenicolous fungi: Endococcus propinquus s. lat., which is new to the Falkland Islands, and a new species of Sagediopsis with small perithecia and 3-septate ascospores c. 18–20 × 4–5 μm, which is described here as S. epimalvinae. A total of 60 new DNA sequences obtained from species of Megasporaceae (mostly Aspicilia) are also introduced. Many recent studies hypothesize global generality of trait patterns, which would allow for comparison among ecosystems and biomes and provide a foundation for general rules and theories, the so-called “Holy Grail” of ecology. However, the majority of these studies focus on functional trait patterns of vascular plants, with a minority examining the patterns of cryptograms such as lichens. Lichens are an important component of many ecosystems due to their contributions to biodiversity and their key ecosystem services, such as contributions to mineral and hydrological cycles and ecosystem food webs. Lichens are also of special interest because of their reliance on atmospheric deposition for nutrients and water, which makes them particularly sensitive to air pollution. Therefore, they are often used as bioindicators of air pollution, climate change, and general ecosystem health. This thesis examines the functional trait patterns of lichens in two contrasting regions with fundamentally different kinds of data. To better understand the patterns of lichen functional traits, we examined reproductive, morphological, and chemical trait variation along precipitation and temperature gradients in Oregon. -

China * Correspondence to: [email protected] Abstract —Four lichen taxa of Lecideaceae, Amygdalaria consentiens var. consentiens, Porpidia carlottiana, P. lowiana, and P. tuberculosa, are reported for the first time from China. Key words —Asia, Lecideales, lichens Introduction The family Lecideaceae Chevall. contains about 23 genera and 547 species, of which the largest genus is Lecidea Ach., containing about 427 species (Kirk et al. 2008, Fryday & Hertel 2014). In China, twenty-three species of the other genera in Lecideaceae have been reported, including two each of Amygdalaria Norman, Bellemerea Hafellner & Cl. Roux, and Immersaria Rambold & Pietschm.; one each of Lecidoma Gotth. Schneid. & Hertel, Paraporpidia Rambold & Pietschm., and Stenhammarella Hertel; and 16 species of Porpidia Körb. (Hertel 1977, Wei 1991; Aptroot & Seaward 1999; Aptroot 2002; Aptroot & Sparrius 2003; Obermayer 2004; Guo 2005; Zhang et al. 2010, 2012; Wang et al. 2012; Ismayi & Abbas 2013; Hu et al. 2014). Amygdalaria and Porpidia are obviously very closely related. Both have large halonate ascospores, a high hymenium, Porpidia-type asci, and a dark pigmented hypothecium and are (with a few exceptions) restricted to lime-free, silicate rocks. However Amygdalaria can be best distinguished from Porpidia by the presence of cephalodia, the higher hymenium (over 130 µm), the larger ascospores (generally 20–35 × 10–16 µm) with conspicuous, rather compact epispores, and a tendency toward a brownish or yellowish pink thallus (Inoue 1984, Brodo & Hertel 1987, Gowan 1989, Smith et al. -

Stenroos1 Key words Abstract Though most of the lichenicolous fungi belong to the Ascomycetes, their phylogenetic placement based on molecular data is lacking for numerous species. In this study the phylogenetic placement of 19 species of cladoniicolous species lichenicolous fungi was determined using four loci (LSU rDNA, SSU rDNA, ITS rDNA and mtSSU). The phylogenetic Pilocarpaceae analyses revealed that the studied lichenicolous fungi are widespread across the phylogeny of Lecanoromycetes. Protothelenellaceae One species is placed in Acarosporales, Sarcogyne sphaerospora; five species in Dactylosporaceae, Dactylo Scutula cladoniicola spora ahtii, D. deminuta, D. glaucoides, D. parasitica and Dactylospora sp.; four species belong to Lecanorales, Stictidaceae Lichenosticta alcicorniaria, Epicladonia simplex, E. stenospora and Scutula epiblastematica. The genus Epicladonia Stictis cladoniae is polyphyletic and the type E. sandstedei belongs to Leotiomycetes. Phaeopyxis punctum and Bachmanniomyces uncialicola form a well supported clade in the Ostropomycetidae. Epigloea soleiformis is related to Arthrorhaphis and Anzina. Four species are placed in Ostropales, Corticifraga peltigerae, Cryptodiscus epicladonia, C. galaninae and C. cladoniicola -

These are potential producers of novel bioactive compounds, but strains isolated on standard media usually represent only a minor subset of these fungi. By using various in vitro growth conditions we are able to modulate and extend the fraction of culturable lichen-associated fungi. We observed that the presence of iron, glucose, magnesium and potassium in growth media is essential for the successful isolation of members from different taxonomic groups. According to sequence data, most isolates besides the lichen mycobionts belong to the classes Dothideomycetes and Eurotiomycetes. With our approach we can further explore the hidden fungal diversity in lichens to assist in the search of novel compounds. Lichen-forming and lichenicolous fungi new to Kazakhstan. – Herzogia 26: 103 –116. Although there is a published lichen flora of Kazakhstan, the diversity of lichen-forming and lichenicolous fungi of this country is incompletely known. Here we publish records of 41 species of lichens and 2 species of lichenicolous fungi for the first time from Kazakhstan. All collections are from the Kazakh Altai and the Saur Mountains, East Kazakhstan. Caloplaca monacensis, Immersaria iranica, Lepraria elobata, L. rigidula and Parmelina pastillifera are new for the wider surroundings of Kazakhstan, as they have neither been found in Central Asia so far, nor in southern Siberia. Several species are new to Central Asia, but were already known from the nearby Siberia. Zusammenfassung: Hauck, M., Tønsberg, T., Mayrhofer, H. & Breuss, O. 2013. Neue Flechten und flechtenbe- wohnende Pilze für Kasachstan. – Herzogia 26: 103 –116. Obwohl es eine publizierte Flechtenflora von Kasachstan gibt, ist die Diversität der Flechten bildenden und bewoh- nenden Pilze dieses Landes unvollständig bekannt. Hier veröffentlichen wir Neunachweise von 41 Flechtenarten und 2 Arten Flechten bewohnender Pilze für Kasachstan. Alle Aufsammlungen stammen vom Kasachischen Altai und dem Saur-Gebirge in Ostkasachstan. Caloplaca monacensis, Immersaria iranica, Lepraria elobata, L. rigidula and Parmelina pastillifera sind neu für die weitere Umgebung Kasachstans, da sie bisher weder in Zentralasien noch in Südsibirien gefunden wurden. Mehrere Arten sind neu für Zentralasien, waren aber bereits aus dem nahen Sibirien bekannt. -
