BIRMINGHAM’S EVANGELICAL FREE CHURCHES AND THE FIRST WORLD WAR by ANDY VAIL A Thesis Submitted to The University of Birmingham For the degree of MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY School of History & Cultures College of Arts and Law The University of Birmingham 2019 University of Birmingham Research Archive e-theses repository This unpublished thesis/dissertation is copyright of the author and/or third parties. The intellectual property rights of the author or third parties in respect of this work are as defined by The Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988 or as modified by any successor legislation. Any use made of information contained in this thesis/dissertation must be in accordance with that legislation and must be properly acknowledged. Further distribution or reproduction in any format is prohibited without the permission of the copyright holder. Abstract This thesis demonstrates that the First World War did not have a major long-term impact on the evangelical free churches of Birmingham. Whilst many members were killed in the conflict, and local church auxiliaries were disrupted, once the participants – civil and military – returned, the work and mission of the churches mostly continued as they had before the conflict, the exception being the Adult School movement, which had been in decline prior to the conflict. It reveals impacts on local church life, including new opportunities for women amongst the Baptist and Congregational churches where they began to serve as deacons. The advent of conscription forced church members to personally face the issue as to whether as Christians they could in conscience bear arms. The conflict also speeded ecumenical co-operation nationally, in areas such as recognition of chaplains, and locally, in organising local prayer meetings and commemorations.

  • Bounty Killer
KickArc and Raindance Entertainment present a Kickstart Production in association with Just Chorizo Productions Bounty Killer Directed by Henry Saine Written by Jason Dodson, Henry Saine & Colin Ebeling Produced by Jason Netter Produced by Colin Ebeling & Henry Saine Executive Produced by Bobby Gerber Tucker Moore Bounty Killer Synopsis It’s been 20 years since the corporations took over the world’s governments. Their thirst for power and profits led to the Corporate Wars, a fierce global battle that laid waste to society as we know it. Born from the ash, the Council of Nine rose as a new law and order for this dark age. To avenge the corporations’ reckless destruction, the Council issues death warrants for all white collar criminals. Their hunters -- the bounty killer. From amateur savage to graceful assassin, the bounty killers now compete for body count, fame and a fat stack of cash. They’re ending the plague of corporate greed and providing the survivors of the apocalypse with retribution. These are the new heroes. This is the age of the BOUNTY KILLER. ____________________________________________________________________ Two of the highest ranked bounty killers in the Thrice Burned Lands, Drifter (Matthew Marsden) and Mary Death (Christian Pitre) team up to exterminate a party full of yellow-tied corporate criminals. Drifter’s explosive killing style is in stark contrast to Mary’s graceful way of delivering death to white collar scum. Despite their difference in style, they exhibit level of comfort with one another that seems to indicate a long and dynamic history between these celebrity assassins. After the fight moves to a skyscraper’s rooftop, Drifter disposes of his intended target and saves Mary from falling to her death -- just another day at the office.

  • Dance Fields Conference Boa NEW
Dance Fields Conference April 19th – 22nd 2017 Book of Abstracts (Chronologically listed) SESSIONSPANELSPRACTICALSWORKSHOPSROUND TABLES Thursday, April 20th 10:00 – 11:30 Session I Chair: Ann R. David Michael Huxley Dance Studies in the UK 1974-1984: A historical consideration of the boundaries of research and the dancer’s voice The first Study of Dance Conference was held at the University of Leeds in 1981. The following year saw the First Conference of British Dance Scholars in London, leading to the inauguration of the Society for Dance Research and then the publication of its journal, Dance Research. Since 1984, the field of dance studies in the UK has both developed and been debated. My paper draws on archival and other sources to reconsider this period historically. With the benefit of current ideas of what constitutes dance, practice, research, and history, it is possible to consider the early years of UK Dance Studies afresh. In the twenty-first-century there are some accepted notions of dance studies. I would argue that they have established boundaries, but that these are often unstated. The period is re-examined with a view to uncovering a broader, and indeed more inclusive, idea of dance studies. In this, attention is given to the researches of practitioners in the period; both published, including in New Dance, and unpublished. Whilst recognising the significant scholarship of the period, the paper also considers the ideas that dancers gave voice to. The analysis is taken further by considering the unexamined discourses that helped enable research in dance in the UK to develop in the way it did.

The tour will open in Bethel, NY on Friday, June 8th at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, where Daltrey and his band will be joined on stage by the acclaimed Hudson Valley Philharmonic, showcasing the beloved classics from the 1969 rock opera, including “Pinball Wizard,” “See Me, Feel Me” and more. Tickets go on-sale Friday, February 2 at 10 a.m. at www.BethelWoodsCenter.org, The Bethel Woods Box Office, www.Ticketmaster.com, Ticketmaster outlets, or by phone at 1.800.745.3000. Considered one of the seminal albums of the rock canon, last year The Who played all of TOMMY for the first time in 28 years at the Royal Albert Hall in London as part of a benefit concert for the Teenage Cancer Trust. Roger performed it in its entirety with his band during his 2011 solo tour. The opportunity to bring an orchestral dynamic to the raw emotion and cathartic impact of the songs that cemented Daltrey’s legacy as a vocal powerhouse adds a compelling dimension to the music’s timelessness.
