Get glamping!

The Glamping Show is making a welcome return to the Midlands next month. Glamping is a more luxurious form of camp- ing that’s become increasingly popular dur- ing the last few years and is now a promi- nent part of the leisure business. Described as ‘a showcase of all that’s glamp- ing in camping’, the show presents a wide selection of pop-up, temporary and pre- pitched accommodation solutions, including yurts, tipi and safari tents. It also features contributions from experts on subjects such as bushcraft, up-cycling and survival tech- niques. The event takes place at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire, from Thursday 22 to Saturday 24 September.

“There is no sinner like a young saint” Aphra Behn's The Rover returns to the RSC for the 30th anniversary of The Swan. What’s On caught up with the show’s director and leading lady to find out more...

In the late 1660s, in the midst of the Second Anglo-Dutch War, a young woman returned home to England from a stint as a spy in Antwerp, only to be denied payment for her work by King Charles II. As with much of what we know of the period, the details of Aphra Behn's colourful life are sketchy, but it was around this time, crippled by debt and seeking a new source of income, that she began to write her first plays. Behn would go on to become perhaps the country's first pro- fessional female playwright, achieving com- mercial success in the 1670s with her carnival comedy The Rover. Thirty years after the play was staged as part of The Swan Theatre's opening season, the RSC now presents a new version of the work, directed by Loveday Ingram and starring Alexandra Gilbreath. “The Rover is an incredibly exciting adven- ture story of three young girls trying to es- cape the tyrannical intentions of their father and brother, set against the backdrop of the Carnival in 1670,” Ingram explains. “When I first encountered the play about 15 years ago, I'd never heard of Aphra Behn, and when I read it, I was intrigued that a woman had written such a wild, funny play over 300 years ago that I didn't even know about.” Although Behn's work was well known in her own time and continued to be popular in the years immediately following her death, by the late 1700s, her plays had slipped mas- sively out of favour, and were barely per- formed again until well into the 20th century. “I think it may be to do with the fact that her personal life was so shocking and notori- ous,” Ingram suggests. “She lived an excit- ing, dangerous life on the edge, and she pushed boundaries and did things that other women wouldn't. Not only was she a spy and arrested for debt, but she also had love af- fairs with various men and women, and al- though she called herself Mrs Behn, there's little evidence that she was actually married. Sarah Millican: Outsider Symphony Hall, Birmingham, Mon 29 - Tues 30 August One of the brightest comedians around, Sarah Millican enjoyed a sell-out success with her very first tour, with bums on all available seats on no fewer than 120 laughter-filled nights. It almost goes without saying that she’s not looked back since. She returns to the Midlands with touring show Outside, in which she focuses on her recent switch from town to country liv- ing. Out on the road since last year and the recipient of plenty of positive reviews, the show is awash with Millican’s trademark smut and flatulence gags, ensur- ing her long-term admirers get exactly the sort of evening they’ve come to expect from her.

But here it is, with Will Smith heading an all-star cast as the masterful marksman Deadshot. For those in the not-know, this is the third instal- ment in the so-called DC Extended Universe in which superheroes of various stripes share the big screen. Viewers will be familiar with The Joker, here played by the rock star and Oscar-winning actor Jared Leto, and with Batman, courtesy of Ben Affleck. They’re all actually more anti-heroic than superheroes and have been granted clemency should they muster their awesome black-op abili- ties to combat an unknown menace threatening the very future of the planet. We’re particularly looking forward to Margot Robbie’s psychotic Harley Quinn, a funny-sexy-terrifying combo. She previously starred opposite Will Smith in last year’s crime romance Focus. In 3D.
