Based on the assumption that collective memory results from the interdependent process between traditional representations of the past, memory makers and consumers, this study explores journalism as a concrete and abstract site of collective memory. As such, it contends that journalism is a material and institutional pool of knowledge built out of disparate yet collective memories, as well as an interactive and durable memorial site that lays the ground for social change. Applying a mixed methods research design, this thesis examines the impact of the French “journal of record” Le Monde in the collective remembrance of torture during the Algerian War (1954-1962). The study employs quantitative content analysis and critical discourse analysis to explore Le Monde’s 1957 and 2000-01 coverage of the use of torture in Algeria, two periods separated by official amnesty laws that crystallized the memory of the war in favour of the official narrative. The deployed discourses are compared and contrasted by opinion polls and interviews of historical, sociological and journalistic experts on State-sponsored torture. As such, this thesis goes beyond the hypothesis that journalism acts as a memory agent through the practice of commemoration by shifting the focus on institutional and narrative memory that collectively produce, disseminate and sustain memories over time. iii Acknowledgements I would first like to thank my supervisor Dr. James McLean for his continuous support and valuable comments throughout the progress of this thesis. In 2000, Beaugé first ignited the “torture controversy”, in Neil MacMaster’s words, by unveiling torture narratives, as well as obtaining confessions from respected career military men whose impunity had been guaranteed by several amnesty laws enacted in the decades following the war (2002, 449-459).2 To fully understand Beaugé’s contribution, and as a matter of context for this thesis, it is important to situate the use of state-sponsored torture within the wider context of the generally received history of the Algerian conflict. Soon after losing the war for Indochina in August 1954, France engaged in an armed conflict with Algeria, a North African French colony since 1848. This conflict included what came to be known as the “sale guerre” (dirty war), which employed methods condemned by international conventions, illegal violence such as massacres, terrorism and torture. It is certain that the “sale guerre” and the Algerian War in general contributed to the collapse of the Fourth Republic (1946-1958), the return of General Charles de Gaulle in 1958, the fall of the French 1 In an email exchange on December 12, 2016, Le Monde’s journalist Florence Beaugé quoted Henri Alleg, author of The Question (1958 book detailing the French methods of torture during the Algerian war), who testified for her at her trial against Jean-Marie Le Pen in May 2003, as he sued Le Monde for label after revelations about his participation to torture in Algeria. 2 According to MacMaster, the “torture controversy” began in 1998 with the 1997-1998 trial of Maurice Papon for crimes against humanity committed during the Second World War, which also shed a light on his role as Prefect of Police during the Paris massacre of October 17, 1961. Boumendjel was born in 1919 and was the son of a Kabyle schoolteacher, a Berber ethnic group in the Kabylia region of northern Algeria. In 1946, he joined Ferhat Abbas’s Democratic Union of the Algerian Manifesto, and became one of the main lawyers for the Algerian nationalists. He joined the FLN in 1955, the year after the start of the Algerian war, while working for the Shell oil company. The criminal colonial war waged by French imperialism left half a million people dead in Algeria.

    Colonial and Post-Colonial Identities 153 Colonial and Post-Colonial Identities: Women Veterans of the “Battle of Algiers” Natalya Vince* When seventeen-year-old student Baya Hocine was put on trial in Algiers in late 1957, accused of planting bombs for the Algerian Front de Libération Nationale (FLN), the French colonial authorities sought out her school reports for the case file. Baya Hocine’s teachers describe an excellent student: extremely intelligent with a lively personality, although reluctant to express any unhappy emotions.1 Could her teachers have guessed that this high-achieving pupil of the French education system in colonial Algeria would go on to commit such a violent expression of anti- colonialism, planting a bomb in an Algiers stadium that killed two people and injured 24 others? It seems unlikely. Unrepentant, Baya Hocine was condemned to death, then reprieved, and passed the rest of the liberation struggle in prison until Algerian Independence was finally won in 1962. Twenty years later, she was a deputy in the Algerian National Assembly during the debates around the introduction of a Family Code.     Transgressing Boundaries: Gender, Race, Religion, and “Françaises Musulmanes” during the Algerian War of Independence Natalya Vince Abstract Taking the example of women active in the Algerian National Liberation Front during the War of Independence, this article examines how different typologies of “the Muslim woman” were challenged, subverted, and reconfigured between 1954 and 1962. The article looks at how women who did not conform to colonial gen- dered ethnoreligious stereotypes came to threaten the continuing existence of French Algeria both on the ground and on the international stage. It then turns to consider the sexual abuse and rape that women often experienced when captured by the French army. Finally, the article examines the relationship between women, Islamic prin- ciples, and the independence movement. Based on extensive interviews with female participants in the war, the article focuses throughout on women’s appropriation and subversion of assigned roles and assumptions. A cen- tral concern is to compare the analytic categories of “gender” and “race” with the frames of reference these women use to articulate their own lives. Recent scholarship has highlighted how Algerian women came to be at the heart of the independence struggle in Algeria between 1954 and 1962, both in terms of the roles they played and in terms of the ideo- logical conflicts that they came to symbolize. On the ground women formed an essential part of the urban guerrilla tactics of the Front de Libération Nationale (National Liberation Front; FLN), notably dur- ing the so- called Battle of Algiers in 1957, during which a number of women planted bombs.

    Repression, Reprisals, and Rhetorics of Massacre in the Algerian War Martin Thomas, University of Exeter Abstract From 1945 to 1962 France’s war with Algerian nationalism generated some of the most extreme violence and counter-violence of French decolonization. Repression and reprisal increased in intensity over these years, becoming integral to the strategies pursued by the warring parties. Some explanation for this escalatory dynamic lies in the rhetorical appeals made to justify what might seem unjustifiable. As the conflict dragged on, French civil and military authorities, as well as settler groups and French political leaders, defended ever-widening circles of repressive action by reference to earlier notorious instances of Algerian political violence. Focused on materials from these various sources, this paper examines the process of rhetorical violence in action from the Sétif uprising of May 1945 to the final OAS bombing campaign in Algiers during the early months of 1962. Particular attention will be paid to the Constantine massacres of August 1955, perhaps the point at which highly-politicized rhetoric transformed the French imperial public sphere, opening the way to a dramatic increase in human rights abuses in colonial Algeria. * * * * * Approaching massacre: the figure of Mouloud Feraoun At 10.45 on the morning of 15 March 1962 two ‘commando squads’ of the ‘Organisation de l’Armée secrète (OAS), broke into a meeting of educational administrators in El Biar, a satellite suburb west of Algiers. The article deals with the postcolonial memory of the Algerian War of Independence in French public sphere, focusing on the politics of memory of the presidents Nicolas Sarkozy and Emmanuel Macron. Exploring the uses of the colonial past in French politics, I seek to delineate the process of ‘coming to terms’ with ‘colonial legacy’ and to trace the transformations that the ‘modes’ of remembering have undergone in France over the last few decades. Over the last few decades, the notion of ‘coming to terms with the past’ (associated since the 1980s with a mode of cosmopolitan memory in favour of social consensus, reconcilia- tion, transitional justice and human rights) has undergone radical changes. The cosmopolitan mode of remembering emphasizes human suffering in past atrocities and is characterized by reflexivity, regret and mourning, in contrast to the antagonistic mode which provides a Manichean division of good and evil, reliant on glorifying or nostalgic narratives (Bull & Hansen 390).

In the 24-25 March 1957 edition of L’Écho d’Alger, an article reported that Ali Boumendjel had committed suicide by jumping to his death from a six-story balcony. Boumendjel, an Algerian lawyer described by French officials as a militant FLN nationalist, had been arrested on 9 February 1957 at the height of the Battle of Algiers. During this period, as historians such as Raphaëlle Branche, Sylvie Thénault, and Pierre Vidal-Naquet have shown, civil liberties and judicial practices were suspended, a state of emergency reigned, and military authority prevailed in Algeria.[1] Though the official reports claimed Boumendjel’s death was a suicide, his family, colleagues, and political affiliates suspected foul play at the hands of the French military. It took more than forty years for the Boumendjel family to receive closure regarding the details of Ali’s disputed end. Rahal’s bold new book explores the life and death of Ali Boumendjel and shows how one man can shed new light on the Algerian war for national liberation and the current memory of these tumultuous years in France and Algeria. In 2001, General Aussaresses’ controversial memoir confirmed that Boumendjel had been killed by the French military, rather than having committed suicide, as had been reported previously in the French press in 1957.[2] This revelation, along with Louisette Ighilahriz’s 1999 account of her rape and torture, reignited public debate in France and Algeria about the war and the Affaire Boumendjel was thrust back into the spotlight.
