Journal of Economics and Management 11 (S3) : 607 – 622 (2017) IJEM International Journal of Economics and Management Journal homepage: http://www.econ.upm.edu.my/ijem Determinants of Crime in Malaysia: Evidence from Developed States SURYATI ISHAK* AND YASMIN BANI Faculty of Economics and Management, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Malaysia ABSTRACT Despite the alarming statistics and growing concerns over crime, the study of crime in Malaysia has received little attention and is largely neglected by the literature on crime in general. Thus, this study is an attempt to add to the existing literature on crime research in developing countries, specifically, in Malaysia. This study aims to determine the socioeconomic and socio-demographic determinants of crime in four developed states of Malaysia from 1990 to 2008. The study utilises fixed effects to examine the determinants of crime in selected states. The findings reveal that GDP per capita, unemployment rate, population density and the number of police officers are significant determinants of total and property crime. On the other hand, violent crime is determined by population density and number of police officers only. The robustness test shows that both population density and the number of police officers are the determinants of property and violent crimes. It can be defined an activity that is against the laws of a nation. However, the meaning of the term ‘crime’ itself varies across countries depending on the respective laws of the nations. -

PERFORMANCES IN SOUTHERN THAILAND This article will present information only about the music and performances of the Bussakorn Sumrongthong1 Muslim social group as the Buddhist related research is covered in a separate article. This paper is a research report of investigative fieldwork on the musical Musical culture of southern culture of the southern provinces of Thailand Thailand. The research was conducted by interviewing prominent musicians from each of the following provinces: Chumphon, Krabi, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phang-Nga, Phatthalung, Phuket, Satun, Songkhla, Surat Thani and Trang. The current political instability in the provinces of Pattani, Yala and Narativas prevented conducting research in these locales. The process of this qualitative research consisted of direct observation, in-depth interviews of well-known artists, a survey of musical instruments and related performance or ritual materials /documents. Bab I Pendahuluan
BAB I PENDAHULUAN 1.1. Latar Belakang Penelitian Indonesia merupakan bangsa yang kaya akan budaya, dari Sabang sampai Merauke terhampar ragam suku, bahasa dan budaya yang berbeda dari yang lainnya. Inilah yang membedakan Indonesia dari bangsa lain sehingga menjadikan Indonesia sangat kaya akan keragaman, dan secara tidak langsung ini menjadi daya tarik bagi pengunjung dari mancanegara untuk berlibur disini. Budaya menjadi salah satu kebanggaan Indonesia dalam memperlihatkan jati dirinya sebagai negara yang sangat kaya. Akan tetapi dengan banyaknya budaya yang ada dan masuknya budaya luar menjadi dampak buruk kepada generasi penerus, dikarenakan mereka tidak mengenali budayanya dan pengertian terhadap budaya itu sendiri. Budaya merupakan suatu hal yang bisa dijadikan identitas unik dan khas bagi suatu daerah. Budaya adalah suatu cara hidup yang terdapat pada sekelompok manusia, yang berkembang dan diwariskan secara turun-temurun dari generasi ke generasi. Ada pula yang mengartikan bahwa budaya adalah suatu pola hidup yang tumbuh dan berkembang pada sekelompok manusia yang mengatur agar setiap individu mengerti apa yang harus dilakukan, dan untuk mengatur tingkah laku manusia dalam berinteraksi dengan manusia lainnya. 1 2 Secara bahasa, “budaya” berasal dari bahasa Sansekerta, yaitu Buddhayah yang merupakan bentuk jamak dari kata Buddhi dimana artinya adalah segala bentuk hal yang berhubungan dengan budi dan akal manusia. Bentuk lain dari kata “budaya” adalah kultur yang berasal dari bahasa Inggris yaitu culture dan bahasa Latin Cultura. Budaya dapat terbentuk dari banyak aspek yang kompleks dan sangat luas, yang termasuk di dalamnya antara lain agama, kepercayaan, hukum, moral, bahasa, adat istiadat, pakaian, bangunan, karya seni, kebiasaan, dan lain-lain. Kehadiran budaya diyakini akan mampu mempengaruhi pengetahuan dari seseorang, gagasan, ide dan lainnya. -
Religious Specificities in the Early Sultanate of Banten
Religious Specificities in the Early Sultanate of Banten (Western Java, Indonesia) Gabriel Facal Abstract: This article examines the religious specificities of Banten during the early Islamizing of the region. The main characteristics of this process reside in a link between commerce and Muslim networks, a strong cosmopolitism, a variety of the Islam practices, the large number of brotherhoods’ followers and the popularity of esoteric practices. These specificities implicate that the Islamizing of the region was very progressive within period of time and the processes of conversion also generated inter-influence with local religious practices and cosmologies. As a consequence, the widespread assertion that Banten is a bastion of religious orthodoxy and the image the region suffers today as hosting bases of rigorist movements may be nuanced by the variety of the forms that Islam took through history. The dominant media- centered perspective also eludes the fact that cohabitation between religion and ritual initiation still composes the authority structure. This article aims to contribute to the knowledge of this phenomenon. Keywords: Islam, Banten, sultanate, initiation, commerce, cosmopolitism, brotherhoods. 1 Banten is well-known by historians to have been, during the Dutch colonial period at the XIXth century, a region where the observance of religious duties, like charity (zakat) and the pilgrimage to Mecca (hajj), was stronger than elsewhere in Java1. In the Indonesian popular vision, it is also considered to have been a stronghold against the Dutch occupation, and the Bantenese have the reputation to be rougher than their neighbors, that is the Sundanese. This image is mainly linked to the extended practice of local martial arts (penca) and invulnerability (debus) which are widespread and still transmitted in a number of Islamic boarding schools (pesantren). -

Simon Major General Harry Hill Bandholtz was America’s representative to the Inter-Allied Supreme Command’s Military Mission in Hungary at the end of World War I. Before the first world war, Bandholtz was Chief of the American Constabulary in the Philippines from 1907 until 1913. During WWI Bandholtz was the Provost Marshal General in General Pershing’s American Expeditionary Forces in France. His organization, 463 officers and 15,912 men, was the world’s largest military police command at the time. Directing it was a huge responsibility. Despite his qualifications and experience, his six-month assignment to Budapest was apparently the most frustrating encounter in General Bandholtz’s distinguished military career. -

Musical Practice of Keronchong
ARTICLE Musical practice of Keronchong Keronchong is believed to have originated in 16 th century Portuguese music of the Portuguese colonies in the Moluccas and Batavia while in Malaysia (and Malaya) keronchong is mainly associated with practice in Malacca. Malaysian keronchong is thought to be derived from Javanese keronchong. Chopyak 1 informs us it is not so much a musical form as it is a style of performance. Therefore he points out that an asli langgam song becomes a keronchong langgam song when performed in a keronchong style on keronchong instruments. This is evident in Ernst Heins’ entry on keroncong in Groves where typical instrumentation of the ensemble would comprise two kroncong (small guitars), among other instruments. Craig Lockard goes on to describe how keroncong orchestras and recordings attracted both Malay and Chinese communities with a sensuous Portuguese-Indonesian musical blend originating in Java while dondang sayang either produced or consumed in some popularity in Melaka and western Johor seemed to bear resemblance to kroncong. In contradistinction however, Dondang Sayang , according to Philip L. Thomas,2 combined the verbal art of complex poetry or pantun as it was known locally, with orchestral accompaniment.
