The idea arose during my reading of Zeromski's novel Ashes. It was then that I became aware of striking similarities be­ tween his novel and Tolstoj 's War and Peace. Eventually this idea evolved into a topic for my thesis. The authors of the two novels belong to two different Slavic branches which, though sharing the same historical ex­ periences, viewed and perceived them differently. Thus the novels, like people, are alike and different. To explore the similar and dissimilar characteristics of both works (as well as the factors which led to their creation) is the purpose of my inquiry. The translations from Polish and Russian, except where otherwise noted, are my own. Every effort has been made to render them as faithfully to the original as possible. How­ ever, they might not always reflect its artistic qualities. The transliteration system used with the Russian texts is that of the American Association of Teachers of Slavic and East European Languages and as that used in the Slavic East Euro­ pean Journal. All Russian words, including first and last names, have been transliterated according to that system. The ii only exceptions to this are the names of characters in quotes translated by other people who have used a different trans­ literation system. No transliteration of names or words in Polish was necessary, since the Polish language uses the Latin alphabet. This "func­ tional” similarity is one of many that exist between the two works. Many Polish, Russian, and foreign literary scholars and critics have pointed out quite early and rather frequent­ ly the convergencies and affinities of the two novels.^- This was done, however, for the most part in a rather general and non-analytical manner, more in casual hints than by actual comparisons. Until the present day, with a few exceptions, neither Polish nor Russian literary scholarship can boast a full-length comparative study of these two epic novels.2 The aim of this dissertation is to fill the existing gap and remedy this unusual situation. The two novels have definite similarities of a the- matical and ideological nature, as well as of a structural and methodological nature. At the same time there are funda­ mental differences in both novels. Thus the basic guide­ lines of my study may be defined as a comparison of: a) the similar thematical elements in both works treated in a similar manner by the two authors, 1 b) those elements which are similar thematically but differ greatly in treatment, c) those topics completely absent in one novel but present in another. These guidelines apply also to Chapter II where the develop­ ment of both novels is discussed. The main criteria in the selection of the topics for the comparison resulted from those elements which the two novels had in common, and these elements will be discussed with the previously mentioned guidelines in mind. [...] Zeromski is a writer to whose works is connected a whole epoch of development of his native literature. Without his literary production the world importance of Polish cul­ ture is inconceivable.^ These words of Viviana Vladimirovna Vitt, a young Soviet literary scholar, concisely and eloquently describe Zeromski's place in Polish literature. The greatness of Zeromski should be a subject of another study. Here we will deal with only one of his works. Ashes. According to the Polish literary critic Waclaw Borowy, Ashes is Zeromski*s most ambitious work^ and occupies in his literary production a place roughly equal to that of War and Peace in Tolstoj's. Stanislaw Eile calls the period from Homeless People (1899) to Ashes (1903), the climactic point in Zeromski's development.® Ashes,? an epic novel dealing with the Napoleonic epoch and Poland's role in it, occupies a very special place in Polish literature for many reasons: thematical, ideologi­ cal, and artistic (structure and style), all of which were innovations in contemporary Polish literature in general and the Polish historical novel in particular. The innovation in topic was Zeromski's shift to themes of the Polish fight for independence soon after the third partition.® The historical element of the novel is connected with a complete­ ly new approach to the epoch in question, namely the rejec­ tion of the traditional legend that Napoleon was Poland's friend while at the same time offering a positive and patri­ otic view of events.

Of what do we know less than the afterlife? Leo Tolstoy was quoted saying: “We can only know that we know nothing. And that is the highest degree of human wisdom.” Knowing nothing completely contradicts the essence of human nature. Although having noted the importance of this unknowing, using the venture of creative fiction, Tolstoy pined ceaselessly for an understanding of the experience of dying. Tolstoy was afraid of death; to him it was an entity which loomed. I believe his early involvements in war, as well as the death of his brother Dmitry, and the demise of his self-imaged major character Prince Andrei Bolkonsky, whom he tirelessly wrote and rewrote—where he dove into the supposed psyche of a dying man—took a toll on the author. Tolstoy took the plight of ending his character’s life seriously, and attempted to do so by upholding his chief concern: the truth. But how can we, as living, breathing human beings, know the truth of death? There is no truth we know of it other than its existence, and this alone is cause enough to scare us into debilitating fits and ungrounded speculation.

Death in War and Peace causes changes in characters‟ perception of their own lives, spurring them to live “better.” Tolstoy is widely understood to embed moral lessons in his novels, and, even in his early work, Tolstoy presents an ideal of the right way to live one‟s life. The eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in Russia were marked by multilingualism among the nobility. The French language, in particular, was widely known and used in high society. Indeed, French was considered expressively superior to Russian (Offord, Ryazanova-Clarke, Rjéoutski & Argent, 2015). Then as now, code-switching was a common phenomenon among bilinguals. There were subjects discussed specifically in French, and others in Russian, in Tolstoy’s novel, which represents the life in Russia between 1807 and 1812, and which was constructed to reflect the nature of the time period and its characteristics. In this paper, using the theoretical model proposed by Myers-Scotton (1995) based on markedness, an identification is made of reasons for using code-switching. This is correlated with René Appel and Pieter Muysken’s (1987) five functions of code-switching; and Benjamin Bailey’s (1999) three functional types of switching. A delineation is also made of the types of topics discussed in the French language by the Russian aristocracy, the types of code-switching used most frequently, and the base language of code- switching in Tolstoy’s novel.

The narrative allure of Sienkiewicz’s With Fire and Sword in 1933–1934 Poland Estelle BUNOUT Postdoctoral researcher Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C2DH), Université du Luxembourg (LU) [email protected] Abstract The novel With Fire and Sword by Henry Sienkiewicz (1846–1916) is an example of the interweaving of fiction, historiography and national collective imagination. It was written at the end of the period of Polish partition (1882–1888) and deals with events that marked the history and the collective imaginations of Poles, Ukrainians and Jews: the history of the Khmel’nyts’kyy Uprising (1648–1657). The epic nature of these historical events already carried the seeds of a powerful and emotional narrative that lends itself to mythicization. However, the reading of this book in a later situation, the Second Polish Republic (1921–1939), led the Polish Sanacja government to withdraw it from the compulsory reading in Polish schools in 1932. This aspect of the Jędrzejewicz school reform sparked a lively debate in the Polish press, whereby historians, literature scholars and journalists discussed the function that this book should have in the patriotic education of young Polish citizens, against the backdrop of tensions between the state and the political opposition on the issue of minorities, namely the Ukrainian minority. This discussion discloses the central place that Sienkiewicz has been given in Polish culture. At the same time, it examines the position that Polish intellectuals attribute to the Ukrainian minority in the Polish state and culture.     Landreth Everitt Dr. Eberle Jane Austen May 8 2019 Rationale for Fanfiction I was really interested in the crossover between the broadway fandom and the Jane Austen fandom, because in my own personal experience every theatre kid has watched Pride and Prejudice at least 50 times and had a massive crush on Keira Knightley. For this piece, I created a crossover of the two most easily hateable characters in the works I drew from: Anatole Kuragin of “Natasha, Pierre, And The Great Comet of 1812” and John Willoughby from Sense and Sensibility. Both mediums contain large amount of free indirect discourse, with Austen inventing the darned thing, and Dave Malloy having his characters reference themselves in the third person (ex: having Natasha take the voice of the narrator and sing “Natasha’s whole body shook with noiseless convulsive sobs” and then switching back to singing in the first person). I’m not intending to change anyone’s mind on these men, personally I see both of them as master manipulators and generally awful people, but I did want to examine the psychology of how they could rationalize their actions when faced with a mirror image of themselves, especially coming from two different modes of art. Arguably the 70 page slice of War and Peace “The Great Comet” is based on is very much a reflection of Sense and Sensibility and vice versa, though Tolstoy and Austen were writing in a different time and place, and Dave Malloy boils that 70 page slice down to even more closely reflect that dynamic, doubtlessly inspired by the many adaptations.

I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract The present study constitutes one of the first attempts to establish the extent to which Russian military thought became westernized by the end of the eighteenth century. The task is an important one in light of Soviet and Russian scholarship that maintains that Russia developed a unique, different, and, some argue, superior way of war to the West. This work argues that Russian military thought was greatly influenced by the ‘military enlightenment’ of Europe, and that the ideas proposed by Russia’s foremost military theoreticians were not as novel as previously claimed. Therefore, the final intellectual product was more a continuation of, rather than a break with, Western practices and traditions of warfare. In this respect, the underlying theme of this thesis clashes with traditional Russian national military historical scholarship. The second major theme of this study is to challenge the pervasive but flawed and often simplified interpretation of the Russian army and its soldiers as undisciplined and uneducated barbarians. Contrary to these misleading views, the writings of Russian theorists bring to light the concerns about discipline and education for the officers, personal hygiene and hospital care for the soldiers and Russian awareness of complex strategic theoretical issues.

    French in the nineteenth-century Russian salon: Fiodor Rostopchin’s ‘memoirs’ Introduction Fiodor Rostopchin’s life and career Fiodor Rostopchin (1763-1826), whose laconic ‘memoirs’ we include in our corpus of documents, was the son of a retired major who owned land in the Province of Oriol, in the fertile black-earth region of Russia some two hundred miles south of Moscow. The family was thought to be of Mongol descent through a sixteenth-century ancestor who had come over to Russia from the Crimean Tatar horde. (It was even claimed that they traced their ancestry back to Genghis Khan (1162?-1227); it is doubtful, though, whether the family took the claim seriously, as Fiodor, in a letter to one of his daughters seems to treat it as a joke.1) From his tenth year until he reached the age of sixteen, Fiodor was educated at home by a Frenchman (a Monsieur Lacour), who was given permission to live with his pupils in a separate house on the family estate. According to an account written much later (in French) by one of his daughters, the young Rostopchin took much pleasure in reading the books that his tutor acquired for his charges, such as French works on ancient history by Jean-Baptiste- Louis Crevier (1693-1765), Charles Rollin (1661-1741) and René Aubert de Vertot (1655- 1735) and the tragedies and moral essays of the great writers of the age of Louis XIV.2 Subsequently, as a young man, Fiodor served in the imperial army, seeing action in the Russo-Turkish War of 1787-92.

Likewise, the German crusaders were ultimately unsuc- cessful in their state-building enterprise. In the fourteenth century they had become a lethal threat to the Lithuanian Grand Duchy and the Kingdom of Poland. 1. The simultaneous union formation The Polish-Lithuanian personal union under Władysław Jagiełło, which was forged in 1385/86 when Rex Poloniae, (i.e., she held the throne; as a female she would otherwise have been called Regina) the young Jadwiga, daughter of king Louis of Anjou of Hungary, who was also of Piast ancestry, mar- ried the Grand Duke of Lithuania, was directed against the Teutonic Order. The latter’s defeat at the hands of Władysław and his relative, the Grand Duke of Lithuania, Vytautas, in 1410 was the beginning of its demise. In the northern part of the Baltic Region, parallel to developments on the Polish-German front, the Kalmar Union of Denmark, Norway and Sweden in 1397 was established with the aim of contesting the commercial hegemony of the Hansa. Thus at the end of the fourteenth century, inter- national politics in the Baltic Region saw the emergence of a Central European empire in the southern part and a Scandinavian empire in the north.
