Jost Amman (1539-1591) is recognized as one of the Part IV: Art History most expressive and sensitive woodcut artists of the sixteenth century; originally from Zurich, at the age of 21 he established himself in Nuremberg where Items 67-72 he continued the tradition of meticulous engraving in the manner of Durer and Beham, and there he received numerous commissions (more than 540 different prints by him are known). The most dramatic feature of the Drawing Book, and this copy in particular, is the series of chiaroscuro prints, whereby the otherwise monochromatic images are awash with ochre color and areas of the white paper showing through read as brilliant highlights.
