THIS IS OUR MARKET... STOCKS TO WATCH by Erik Ipsen Liz Claiborne’s profits and shares undergo unfashionable shrinkage Next week, Liz Claiborne is expected to extend its losing streak to three quarters by posting an earnings drop of almost 30%. The company says it’s focusing on core brands and may shear others off, but talk is cheap and so, increasingly, is Liz’s stock. The entire industry has fallen out of fashion, though. Even longtime star Polo Ralph Lauren has slipped 29% since the spring, versus 33% for Liz. In recent days, Merrill Lynch has fired two key executives; flagged a $5.5 billion write-down of assets, including subprime mortgages; and, not surprisingly, seen its chief executive called a lousy risk manager. This week the firm finally makes its fall from grace official by announcing its first quarterly loss in three years, an expected 45 cents a share. The stock has fallen 26% in the past six months, and reached a 52-week low last week. [email protected] “We want to reach women wher- ever they are,” adds Sophia Stuart, director of mobile for Hearst’s digi- tal media group. “Women [would] rather leave home without lipstick than a cell phone.” Because of the challenges of small cell phone screens, publishers have to design content that is differ- ent from their regular Web pages in both style and substance. Stories are shortened because consumers typi- cally spend only about five minutes at a time reading text on their mo- bile devices, versus 30 minutes in front of their computers. The average length of a mobile subscription is two months

“On your mobile phone, you snack on information,” says Mr. Fridman. While most publishers have their eyes on mobile advertising dollars, a few have gone in a different direction. In December, Time Inc. launched a mobile ap- plication linked to its popular fash- ion magazine InStyle. Mobile sub- scribers are required to pay $3.99 a month to use the cell phone pro- gram, which puts photos of the lat- est celebrity outfits and hairstyles at consumers’ fingertips. InStyle Mo- bile currently has 20,000 sub- scribers. Tough task but publishers have their work cut out for them. Making money from these mobile offerings won’t be easy, as industry observers question whether these tiny sites will lure enough eyeballs. For example, the four Hachette mobile sites are collectively drawing 2.5 million page views a month, a fraction of the 40 million monthly page views each of its corresponding Web sites receives. CondéNet and Hearst say it is too early to disclose traffic. “We still haven’t seen a signifi- cant demand for information on the mobile phone,” says Barry Parr, me- dia analyst at Jupiter Research. “It will be a difficult path.”
