Remembering D-Day & With Jack Herney, Instructor in History, Emeritus September 23–30, 2021 Dear Members of the Exeter Family, On , 1944, more than 130,000 Allied troops braved the choppy waters of the to step ashore on the beaches of Normandy. These courageous servicemen and women launched a two-month crusade that changed the course of history, freeing from the grip of unspeakable tyranny during World War II. In September 2021, join me and fellow members of the Exeter family to experience the rich legacy of D-Day on a weeklong journey from Paris to ’s northern coast. As a student of the First and Second World Wars who has led many of this for Exeter, I am excited to guide you through the fabled battlefields, memorials, and museums that vividly bring the events surrounding D-Day to life. For additional depth and context, we will also explore the region’s medieval history, from a viewing of the awe-inspiring Tapestry to an excursion to , home to a Gothic cathedral made famous in paintings by . Starting at the World War II sites of Paris, we will trace the story of D-Day to Normandy’s landing beaches, visiting the German battery at Longues-sur-Mer, the monuments of , and the 100-foot-high cliffs of , site of a dramatic D-Day battle. We will tour a fascinating museum built around a German bunker on and discover Sainte-Mère-Église, the first French town liberated by Allied troops.

English Channel SUNDAY,GERMANY SEPTEMBER 26: / BAYEUX Drive to Caen to explore the Mémorial de Caen Museum, a Sainte-Mère-Église Rouen spectacular museum documenting the Battle of Normandy Bayeux Caen and later conflicts. Following lunch on your own at the museum’s cafe or restaurant, pass by Château Périers, where Marie-Louise Osmont was living at the time she Paris wrote her well-known wartime diary. Return to Bayeux FRANCE for a tour including its 11th-century cathedral and the Bayeux Tapestry, an embroidered depiction of the Norman conquests and one of the most renowned works of art to survive from the . FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 24: PARIS, FRANCE Arrive this morning and those on the suggested flight will be transferred to our hotel in central Paris. Enjoy a light snack before heading out to the eastern tip of the Île de la ITALY Cité, the island in the at the heart of Paris. There, visit the Mémorial des Martyrs de la Déportation, a tribute to the more than 200,000 French citizens who were deported from France during World War II. This evening,Saint-Rémy-de-Pr enjoy a ovence reception and short talk by Jack Herney. Arles S,R SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 25: PARIS / BAYEUX Visit the golden-domed Hôtel National des Invalides, a beautiful complex of 17th-century buildings and courtyards. There, tour the Musée de l'Armée, with its impressive collection of photographs, uniforms, weapons, Omaha Beach, photo by Hugh Whitchurch and documentsSPAIN related to the First and Second World Wars. After lunch, we will continue to Normandy, stopping to see the small Jerusalem Cemetery Mediterraneanoutside Bayeux. MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 27: D-DAY BEACHES / Arrive at your hotel in Bayeux for the first of your daily Sea BAYEUX Harkness discussions with Jack over a glass of wine. In the afternoon, spend time at the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial in Colleville- sur-Mer, the resting place of more than 9,380 soldiers, and explore Pointe du Hoc, where U.S. Rangers scaled 100-foot-high cliffs to silence the German guns that threatened the D-Day operation. This evening, return to the hotel for a social hour and a Harkness discussion with Jack. Dinner is at leisure. Enjoy free time for lunch before returning to Paris for a one- night stay. This evening, celebrate a memorable week with a festive farewell dinner at one of Paris’ fine restaurants.
