BELLEVILLE 1964

1. A map of Belleville was posted at the entrances to the city. This one was on Dundas St. West, near the School for the Deaf. The pictures will show west Belleville, the downtown area, the East Hill, then North Belleville, and coming back to Palmer Road

2. Rite-Way, a department store, was on Dundas St. West, just outside the city in Sidney Township. It was open until 10 o'clock every evening, which was very new for Belleville.

3. Hastings Manor is The Home for the Aged. It was built in 1954 to replace a 3 storey building on Dundas St. East, just east of the hospital.

4. Avondale School, on Avondale Road, was once a 1 room school, and had 2 or 3 additions over the years. It was built in 1912 and used until the early 1960s. Nancy and Bruce started to school here and walked every day from 65 Palmer Road.

5. Ontario School for the Deaf was built as a boarding school for deaf children. In 1869, William Ponton deeded 66 acres for an Ontario Institution for the Deaf and Dumb. In 1876, there were 238 students, 155 male and 83 female. The first superintendant was Dr. W. Palmer, who was there from 1877 to 1897. There have been a great many changes and additions over the years.

6. Latter Day Saints Church on Palmer Road.

7. Sir Mackenzie Bowell School was built in 1964 to accommodate students from kindergarten to grade 8. Nancy and Bruce went there.

8. Albert College. Albert College is one of the oldest residential schools in Ontario, and was founded by the Methodist Episcopal Church and opened in 1857 on College Street. The original name was Belleville Seminary and was changed in 1966 to Albert College. It was at one time a university but is now a co­ ed secondary school. After a fire in 1917, it was decided to relocate and in 1926 the school moved to Dundas St. West. It is associated with The United Church of Canada. 9. Shrine Club.

22. City Hall. Built in 1872-73. cost $35,000.00. It housed the local fanners market, city council and police court. The Jamison Bone building was built by Henry Corby in 1870.

25. Arena. Opened in 1932. Was called Hume Arena. Re-named Memorial Arena. Nancy and Bruce took figure skating lessons here.

26. Police Station on Market Square. Building was used by police from 1905 to 1964. This picture was taken shortly before it was closed as a police station and torn down. It was first used as Village Hall when Belleville was incorporated as a police village in 1836.

27. Police Station. Police Force moved to YMCA building when "The Y" moved to their new building on Victoria Avenue.

31. Corby Library. Notice the RR tracks in the middle of the street. The building was presented to the city in 1908 by Senator Henry Corby. It had been erected by the Mercantile Bank of Canada Farley Mowat's father was once librarian here and the family lived on the top floor. An addition was added to the library in 1959.

33. Court House was opened 1961. The original Court House was built in 1838 and was used for more than 122 years.

34. Salvation Army Citadel. The Salvation Army came to Belleville in 1884 and used Metropolitan Hall and other buildings for their services until 1940 when they acquired this building.

36. Victoria Avenue Baptist Church at Pinnacle Street

37. Bell Telephone building on corner of Victoria and Pinnacle was built in 1949, and houses offices.

38. Federal Building and Post Office was built in 19--. Postal Service in Belleville is one of the oldest in Ontario. Names of mail recipients were published in the local paper and people could pick up their letters at the post office. Letter carrier system started on May 24, 1913.

40. Tabernacle United Church was built in 1877.

42. Ontario Business College on Victoria Avenue between Pinnacle St. and Church St. The college was established in 1868 and has been located at various places in the city.

43. St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church

44. St. Michael's Academy. Records indicate there was a Catholic school in Belleville as early as 1830. The first St. Mike's was built in 1907. Nicholson Catholic College high school opened in 1959.

Slides of Belleville 1964 - 3 of 6 46. Hastings County Museum, on Church Street opened Aug. 9, 1961 and was operated by the Hastings County Historical Society.

47. Belleville Collegiate Institute and Vocationa School, commonly know as BCI. About 1840 a Senior Grammar School was built on the east side of Church St. near the site of BCI, one of the first Grammar Schools in Upper Canada and the only one in Hastings County. The head master was paid $1000.00 per year and his assistant $500.00. Children living in the town were admitted free, non-residents paid $3.00 quarterly. In 1874, a new brick school was built and had elementary school on the first floor and high school on the upper floor. The building was replaced by this one for just a high school in 1927.

48. St. Thomas Anglican Church. The first church building on this site was erected in 1820. It was replaced by a stone building in 1858, which was destroyed by fire in 1876.

49. The cemetary is north of the church.

50. Bridge Street United Church was built in 1864. Opened May 1865. It burned in 1886 and only the tower survived. It was re­ built and re-opened in May 1887.

55. Masonic Lodge. The Order of Free Masons came to Belleville with the first pioneer settlers. Moira Lodge was established in 1801. This building was built in 1950 to replace quarters on Front St. across from the Upper Bridge.

56. Sons of Jacob Synogogue at Victoria Ave. and Bleecker Ave. was built in 1955.

57. Entymological Laboratories or "The Bug House" was built in 1955. It had been housed in another building on the same site.

58. Mead Johnson came to Belleville in 1925. At this plant they make baby foods and vitamins.

59. Belleville General Hospital. The Women's Christian

Slides of Belleville 1964 - 4 of 6 Association, under the leadership of Harriet Jacques, wife of the Principal of Albert College, was formed in 1879 to help the poor and the needy. They established a "poor house" on the west side of Coleman Street where the Corbin Lock factory was later located. By 1885, they had saved enough money to start a hospital on Dundas St. East, overlooking the Bay. On July 20, 1886, a combined hospital and home for the aged was opened. It was built by the women, and owned and operated by them until 1946, when thay sold it to the City. There were 8 beds and a staff of 3 nurses. Total patients in the first year was 86. Cost was $1.00 per week. A training school was established in 1893 and 5 nurses graduated in 1895. Several additions and changes have been made over the years. There is no training school now. Community Colleges train nurses now.

61. Ontario Hydro built in 1962 for administrative quarters for Eastern Ontario.

62. Deloro Stellite opened their plant in 1956 for the manufacture of cobalt and nickel alloys. The company started in Deloro in 1911.

63. Bakelite Company came to Belleville in 1949 to manufacture phenolic resins.

64. Belleville Plaza, on Dundas St. East. It has 2 rows of stores with an open space between them.

66. Family YMCA built in 1964 to replace their building on Victoria Ave.

67. Moira Secondary School was opened in Sept. 1959. An addition was built 2 years later.

69. CNR Station. The Grand Trunk Railway came to Belleville in 1856. The main part of the present building was built that year. In 1879, a line was built down Pinnacle St. to the harbour so iron ore from North hastings could be moved more easily. By 1923 the Grand Trunk became the Canadaian National Railway.

75. fire station no. 2 on West Moira St. was built in 1953. In the early years a volunteer fire brigade was maintained and their only equipment were hand pails made of leather. After 1836 pumping engines operated by hand came into use. Around 1860 they were replaced by steam powered ones. No. 1 Fire STation was located at the south end of Front St. on the west side near the entrance to Victoria Park. No. 2 Fire Station was at the north end of Front St. near the Upper Bridge. 1916 ended the volunteer system and a permanent force was organized. In 1921 the first motorized euqipment replaced the horse drawn wagon. In 1949 this modem new station was opened on Moira St. West, and the first hydraulic aerial truck was purchased. In 1953 a second new station was built on Dundas St. East, just east of the hospital, replacing the old one on Front St.
