Bulletin De Théologie Et De Philosophie Médiévales 1006-08_RTPM08-1_06b_Bull Théo 03-06-2008 12:06 Pagina 195 BULLETIN DE THÉOLOGIE ET DE PHILOSOPHIE MÉDIÉVALES Le Bulletin présente quelques livres récents dans le domaine de la théologie et de la philosophie au Moyen Âge, qui ont attiré l’atten- tion des membres de la rédaction. Les notices sont écrites dans la langue préférée par le recenseur et suivies de son nom. La liste com- plète des livres qui ont été envoyés à la Revue, est signalée à la fin du volume (Livres reçus). I. NOTICES BIBLIOGRAPHIQUES Les éditions critiques – les traductions Dans le cadre des progrès accomplis par la recherche plotinienne depuis un demi-siècle, une traduction française plus fidèle des écrits de ce philosophe s’imposait. Aux diverses traductions partielles déjà parues dans la collection du Cerf vient à présent s’ajouter celle du Traité 3 sur la nature de l’âme. La traduction est basée sur le texte éta- bli par H.-R. Schwyzer, qui a parfois été retouché. Munie d’une intro- duction et d’un commentaire approfondi, elle s’accompagne d’une bibliographie et de plusieurs index, rendant l’œuvre de ce philosophe accessible à un plus large public1. Le premier volume d’une édition rénovée des décrets des conciles œcuméniques contenant les textes des décrets de sept premiers conciles œcuméniques, du Premier au Second Concile de Nicée (325-787), inclut également ceux du Concile in Trullo (692) qui étaient omis dans les éditions précédentes. Ce volume initial, qui sera suivi de trois autres, est l’œuvre d’une dizaine de chercheurs allemands et italiens2. 1. PLOTIN, Traité 3-III, 1. Introduction, traduction, commentaires et notes par M. Jeauneau fit paraître une première édition intégrale des Glosae super Platonem de Guillaume de Conches dans la série des ‘Textes philosophiques du Moyen Âge’. Suite à la découverte de trois nouveaux manuscrits, venant s’ajouter aux huit mss déjà connus, il présente une nouvelle édition, munie d’une ample introduction sur la méthode et l’esprit, les sources et la fortune de ces Glosae qui n’ont cessé d’être recopiées du XIIe au XVe siècle et d’être exploitées par les commentateurs successifs de ce dialogue platonicien3. Poursuivant son ambitieux projet de publication de textes latins médiévaux, munis d’une traduction anglaise et d’annotations abon- dantes, la collection des Dallas Medieval Texts and Translations consacre un second volume à la Summa d’Henri de Gand, comprenant cette fois les art. 25-30 sur des questions concernant l’unité et la simplicité de Dieu. Celles-ci sont d’un grand intérêt, car elles témoignent de l’évolution du climat intellectuel dans le dernier quart du XIIIe siècle après les condamnations de l’aristotélisme en 12774. Parmi les œuvres théologiques de Pierre Abélard, ses Sententiae occupent indubitablement une place primodiale. C’est en fait son seul écrit qui présente une synthèse globale de son enseignement théolo- gique. La présente édition permet tout particulièrement de se faire une idée de l’évolution de ce qu’on peut désigner comme étant des reportationes de l’enseignement du Maître. L’édition jointe d’un Liber sententiarum Magistri Petri en est un bel exemple5. Avec un cinquième tome s’achève la publication dans la collection ‘Sources chrétiennes’ des Sermons sur le Cantique de S. Bernard. Dans ses derniers sermons (69-86), composés à la fin de sa vie, l’abbé de Clairvaux livre les expériences les plus hautes de sa contemplation. Il 3. GVILLELMI DE CONCHIS Glosae super Platonem. Parmi les dominicains postillateurs actifs à Paris au XIIIe siècle, Guillaume de Luxi, qui fut maître en théologie à Paris et prédicateur en cette cité, vraisemblablement entre 1267 et 1275, paraît quelque peu méconnu. La présente édition sélective de ses commentaires bibliques nous fait dès lors mieux connaître son enseignement et sa théologie. Il est un témoin de l’évolution de l’exégèse et de la prédi- cation dominicaine déjà présente en ses débuts7. Dans la collection des Opera Omnia de Maître Jean Hus, paraît une édition augmentée et revue de celle fournie par B. Ryba en 1948; elle porte sur la ‘Dispute Quodlibétique’, tenue par le réformateur en 1411 à Prague, alors qu’il était professeur à l’université de cette ville8. Catalogues de manuscrits Avec Hugues de Saint-Victor, son confrère Richard occupe une place éminente dans l’école victorine en ses origines. On lui doit une bonne trentaine de traités ou commentaires authentiques, en plus d’écrits pseudépigraphes ou douteux. Un catalogue relevant plusieurs centaines de manuscrits de ses écrits témoigne de la large diffusion de son œuvre. Ce catalogue, travail d’années de recherches, est indispensable pour une édition critique de l’ensemble des écrits de ce Victorin renommé9. Jean et Paul de Venise, dont sont relatées les vicis- situdes et localisés une bonne partie des manuscrits dispersés, que s’est livré R. Quinto. Pour L.-J. Bataillon dans la préface, cet «ingente lavoro di Riccardo dovrebe generare una quantità di nuove ricerche»10. Actes de Congrès Le XIe Congrès International de Philosophie Médiévale de la Société Internationale pour l’Étude de la Philosophie Médiévale, qui s’est déroulé à Porto du 26 au 30 août 2002, s’est donné comme thème général Intellect et Imagination dans la Philosophie Médiévale, voulant montrer combien «imagination» et «intellect» sont porteurs d’une richesse philosophique extraordinaire dans l’économie de la philoso- phie médiévale et celle de la constitution de ses spécificités historiques. Trois solides volumes contiennent à présent les 16 leçons plénières et la centaine de communications produites durant ces importantes assises11. Par un Colloque qui s’est déroulé les 28 et 29 avril 2003, l’univer- sité de Catane à tenu à célébrer la rénovation et la meilleure mise en valeur de son Archivio Storico avec ses nombreux documents concer- nant l’héritage historique de la Sicile. Le personnage principal qui a retenu l’attention des conférenciers fut tout naturellement le domini- cain Pietro Geremia (1399-1452), auquel Catane doit la fondation de son premier Studium Generale. L’ensemble des quatorze rapports relève plus particulièrement le rôle intellectuel, réformateur et l’acti- vité pastorale de ce prédicateur de renom12. 10. R. One reason for this esteem might be their potential to reveal in a succinct manner how scholars, schools or entire societies thought about the body of knowledge available at their time and its specific structure. However, what do classifications tell us about thepleasures of knowledge? Occasionally, quite a lot, par- ticularly in a setting where the acquisition of knowledge is considered to be the only path leading to the pleasures of ultimate happiness. This is the case for al-Fa-ra-b-ı (d. 950), who is at the center of this paper. He is particularly interesting for a study such as this because he actually does believe that humanity’s final goal consists in the attainment of happiness through the acquisition of knowledge; and he wrote several treatises, not only on the classification of the sciences as such, but also on the underlying epistemological reasons for this division. Thus he offers excellent insight into a 10th-century theory of what knowledge essentially is and how it may be acquired, a theory which underlies any further discussion on the topic throughout the classical period of Islamic thought.

    Mechanisms for the Transmission of Culture: The Role of “Place” in the Arts of Memory Mary Carruthers This essay will explore the organizing theme of this conference, translatio, as liter- ally as possible, taking it to indicate those cultural materials — linguistic, auditory, tactile, visual — that are “carried-across” from one place to another. From one place to another, and also one time to another, for translatio is profoundly the task of recol- lection. There are various mechanisms for bringing about such cultural transporta- tion, of course — material causes like codices and rolls, jewels and fabrics and pots in particular, things that can be carried from one place to another and that also carry across time. In the Middle Ages, however, these means of translation were spotty and uncertain at best. Far more frequently than a book or a token, the favored means of cultural translation, especially in the early Middle Ages, was apt to be a living, breathing, thinking and speaking person. A living human mind could even now be considered a possible form of “material culture,” though not one that most historians are very happy to consider, let alone rely on. People die too soon, for one thing. And they have “faulty” memories. Yet, in one of the most moving acts of his reign, when Charlemagne decided to collect a great library to build up the palace school of his court in Aachen, he did so first by bringing over from England a person. 1 Alcuin in turn collected a group of scholars about him, to form the palace school and thus to create the palace library.

Substance and Providence in the Old French Theological Romance Abstract The doctrine of divine providence was considered fundamental to understanding the nature of reality in medieval Christian orthodoxy. One of our greatest modern impediments to proper understanding of this law are the radically different ontologies that flourished in the Latin estW through the recuperation of Ancient thought, most notably in the divisions between the Platonists and the Aristotelians. Whereas Biblical exegesis owed more to Augustine's Platonism, the rise of Aristotelian thought in the university curriculum entailed a serious threat to the doctrine of providence. The translation and dissemination of Islamic Aristotelians revealed an almost identical challenge to Islamic orthodoxy on the same matter. Philosophical, and especially ontological, speculation on the nature of substance (ontology) was therefore fertile ground for heresy. The main works under examination are the anonymous Queste del Saint Graal and the continuation of the Roman de la Rose by Jean de Meun. Deeply imbued with Augustinian figuralism and Biblical history, the Queste strongly distinguishes itself from the rest of the Lancelot en Prose, most notably La Mort le Roi Artu, in its theological purpose.

    The Trinitarian Personalism of Saint Thomas Aquinas: A Full Development of Eastern and Western Trinitarian Theology Roland Millare God the Father Dr. Donald Prudlo 28 July 2011 1 The Trinity is at the center of the Christian faith. In modern theology, the works of Karl Rahner S.J. (1904-1984) and John Zizioulas (b. 1931) have laid the foundation for recent discussion on Trinitarian theology. Their thought continues to influence Trinitarian theology in a manner which undermines two of the fundamental aspects of this doctrine, that of person and relation. After a brief outline of the seminal ideas in the Trinitarian theology of Rahner and Zizioulas, it will be necessary to address three areas of concern related to their views. First, it is necessary to deal with the evolution and use of “person” in Trinitarian theology. Second, I will demonstrate that there is only an apparent opposition of “essentialism" and “personalism” through the development of Trinitarian theology in the work of Saint Thomas Aquinas. Finally, this paper will outline the notion of “relation” as a development of the full meaning of “person” in the Prima pars of the Summa Theologiae. The speculative doctrine on the Trinity is irrelevant for everyday Christians according to Karl Rahner. The speculative (“immanent”) Trinity has had no effect in Rahner’s estimation because the faithful are essentially monotheists.1 As a response, he coined his oft-quoted grundaxiom (fundamental axiom) concerning the Trinity: “The ‘economic’ Trinity is the ‘immanent’ Trinity and the ‘immanent’ Trinity is the ‘economic’ Trinity.”2 The relation of the 1 Karl Rahner, The Trinity, Trans by.
