What a Bride Needs to Know What a Bride Needs to Know______________________________________________________ What a Bride Needs to Know In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful O Allah, send Your abundant peace and blessings upon Your messenger, the Mercy to Mankind, Muhammad, and his pure progeny; and hasten the revolution of our Holy Imam (AS) 1 Our Lord, accept from us. Verily You, You are the Hearing, the Knowing. 1 Holy Qur’an; Surah al-Baqarah (2), aayah 127 I What a Bride Needs to Know______________________________________________________ Preface All praise belongs to Allah (SWT), Lord of the Worlds, Who, by His mercy and kindness bestowed opportunity for this work to be compiled. This work is aimed to be a guide for brides-to-be, to help to ensure that one of the most special days of their lives, and perhaps one of the most significant turning points, is full of blessings for everyone involved. Insha’Allah by following the guidance in this booklet, which has been referenced throughout, we will all move a step towards attaining the pleasure of Allah (SWT) and His chosen ones; and our weddings, which are planned and awaited with so much joy and excitement will not become a breeding ground for Shaytan, inviting the displeasure and wrath of the Almighty. Most of this booklet is addressed to the bride herself. However, the groom, the families of the bride and groom, the bridesmaid and the best man, and anyone else who might be involved in organising the wedding proceedings may find benefit in reading it. In the compilation of this book Islamic scholars and personalities involved in resolving marital problems have been consulted.

MARRYING JESUS: BRIDES AND THE BRIDEGROOM IN MEDIEVAL WOMEN’S RELIGIOUS LITERATURE Rabia Gregory A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Religious Studies (Medieval and Early Modern Christianity). Chapel Hill 2007 Approved By: E. Jane Burns Peter Iver Kaufman Lance Lazar Albert Rabil Jr. Dan Thornton © 2007 Rabia Gregory ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Rabia Gregory Marrying Jesus: Brides and the Bridegroom in Medieval Women’s Religious Literature Under the direction of Peter Iver Kaufman Phrases such as “bride of Christ” and passages which describe Christ as a “Bridegroom,” a “Spouse,” and a “Lover” appear in a wide range of Christian texts composed in both Latin and vernacular languages. The phrase has become almost a generic descriptor for religious women— especially mystics—yet the function of the relationship between Christ and his beloved is never a constant. I explore the language and imagery that surrounds Christ’s many brides by examining a selection of medieval works that portray Christ as a desirable spouse for Christian women. Relationships between Christ and pious women did not consist exclusively of a spiritual re-enactment of courtship and marriage in vision or ritual. Mystics enacted marriage to Jesus in visions, while nuns’ vows and profession ceremonies are described as a marriage to Christ, a chaste union to be consummated in heaven, traditionally modeled upon secular marriage ceremonies. However, the title “Bride of Christ” was not uniformly applied by and to medieval women, and some nuns and mystics never gained a bridal association.
