It is neither the fault of the Chronicler nor the postal system – we were simply preoccupied preparing for Anealan Baronial Championship! Since last we wrote, we have had the great pleasure of attending two events “in person” rather than on Discord. The first was the Baroness’s Fighter Auction. Baroness Elizabeth invited all the Populace to venture out from their homes to participate in tourneys at the park. The combatants on the day were auctioned off to generous patrons, earning a total of $1562 which is being donated to the WA Emergency Services Volunteers Hardship Assistance Scheme. After a long time locked down, the fighters of the Populace were keen to knock the cobwebs off their sword, shields, glaives, capes and various other combat accoutrements. The competition was impressive with nine combatants in the Armoured Combat tournament and four in the Rapier tournament. There was also an Arts & Sciences competition which received a high number of entries. Congratulations to: The Honourable Lord Lokki Rekkr – Winner of the Armoured Combat Tournament Master Dameon Greybeard – Winner of the Rapier Tournament Lady Frances Affrica Ray – Winner of the Arts & Sciences Competition, and Presented with a Pearl in Recognition of her High Score Lady Isolde van Wilravenssijde – Presented with a Pearl in Recognition of her High Score in the Arts & Sciences Competition We also had the pleasure of bestowing the following awards: Baronial Cypher – to the Honourable Lord Pantero Pantera de Valembrosa Black Feather – to Aife Golden Sword – originally awarded by King Niall & Queen Sabine at Rekkrthing, to Baron Columb mac Diarmata And the following Officer Handovers occurred: Seneschal – the Honourable Lord Konrad Hildebrandt finally took possession of the token of the Office Reeve – the Honourable Lord Lokki Rekkr handed on to Mistress Leonie de Grey Marshal – Baron Agostino Tamburini handed on to the Honourable Lord Lokki Rekkr And of course, many people walked away from the event with some spectacular prizes! The next event that we attended was Anealan Baronial Championship weekend. Sadly, the event looked very different from the Championship to which we have grown accustomed. We didn’t get to camp and we only had two days of fun instead of four. Nevertheless, the Populace of Aneala came together for what turned out to be a truly fantastic event. Before we recount the business of the weekend, we would like to offer our personal thanks to the Steward, our Seneschal the Honourable Lord Konrad Hildebrandt, for the amazing work that he did putting together such a great event and to the Baronial Herald, Noble Gwyneth ferch Aeddan, for being impressively flexible, adaptive and forgiving whilst performing Court Herald duties for us. The following Officer Handovers occurred: Chatelaine – Lord Zaven Zeitountsi took possession of the token of the Office Arts & Sciences – the Honourable Lady Illaria de Vale handed on to Lady Frances Affrica Ray We had the pleasure of bestowing the following awards: Order of the Swan’s Wing – Count Stephen Aldred and Countess Mathilde Adycote of Mynheniot Baroness’s Favour – Lady Frances Affrica Ray Order of the Golden Swans – the Honourable Lady Ilaria de Vale Order of the Cygnets of Aneala – Matthew of Aneala (Companion of the Order – Martial) With great sadness in our hearts, we farewelled our Champions who have spent the past year keeping the Barony protected and inspired. We presented each Champion with a scroll – written by Baroness Elizabeth and illuminated by a team of scribes consisting of Mistress Leonie, Mistress Branwen and Mistress Ant – to thank them for their service to the Barony. Our thanks go to: The Honourable Lord Konrad Hildebrandt, outgoing Champion of the Sword Lord Wolfgang Germanicus, outgoing Champion of the Bow Lord Zaven Zeitountsi, outgoing Champion of the Rapier Mistress Branwen of Werchesvorde, outgoing Champion of the Arts & Sciences Marek of Vargahol, outgoing (and inaugural) Youth Champion And it is with great joy in our hearts that we congratulate and welcome our new Champions, who have vowed to protect the Barony in times of need, to answer all challenges and to inspire the Populace for the coming year. Each new Champion received a special Championship tassel to commemorate their win, the regalia of the Champion and a chaplet to present to their consort or inspiration: Champion of the Sword – Lord Dino de Malta, inspired by Tattiana Jasmine Champion of the Bow – Emma of Aneala, inspired by Cooper Champion of the Rapier – Lord Zaven Zeitountsi, inspired by Figen Champion of the Arts & Sciences – Noble Gwyneth ferch Aeddan, inspired by Mistress Branwen on Werchesvorde Youth Champion – Indeo of Dragon’s Bay Congratulations also to Indeo of Dragon’s Bay and Krystal of Dragon’s Bay, who won the Youth Archery and Youth Boffer respectively, and to Manny of Dragon’s Bay who came a close second in the Archery Championship and whose impressive shooting we rewarded with a small gift of largesse, which was kindly provided by Mistress Liduina de Kasteelen van Valkenburg. Despite inclement weather, Aneala’s Baronial Championship turned out to be a lovely event. The competitions were highly entertaining and exciting to watch, with some edge-of-your-seat finals fought and some very close results. We were pleased by the chivalry and courtesy that we saw upon each tourney field. We offer our most sincere thanks to every member of the Populace who attended to witness the momentous occasion. In order to acknowledge the courage that it takes to enter a Championship and the great chivalry and honour shown by all participants in the event, we have provided the Baronial Chronicler with the list of entrants, for inclusion in the Vine. (Find it below.) And if you’re interested in who previous Champions of the Barony have been, you can find a list here https://aneala.lochac.sca.org/resources/history/champions/ which we think is a really love piece of history to peruse – can you spot some familiar names? For now, we look ahead to the coming months. The Canton of Dragon’s Bay have an “Outlandish Feast” upcoming in October, with details coming soon. The Barony of Aneala is running Bal d’Aneala on November 7th. As always, find details here https://aneala.lochac.sca.org/calendar/ Please stay safe and well.
