JAMES A. BRODERICK CURRICULUM VITAE TEACHING AND ADMINISTRATIVE EXPERIENCE: At The University of Texas at San Antonio: 1983-2003 and Emeritus 2003- • Founding Member of the UTSA Retired Faculty Association also service as Association Treasurer and Member of its Board of Directors 2011-2014 • Professor Emeritus 2003 • Professor and Chair of The Department of Art and Art History 2001-2003 • Professor and Director of the Division of Visual Arts 1996-2001 • Professor and Director of the Division of Art and Architecture 1991-96 • Professor and Director of the Division of Art and Design 1983-91 Comprehensive administrative responsibilities for the UTSA Department of Art and Art History, that through its over two dozen faculty members and several administrative and professional staff members. The Department currently serves approximately 500 majors involved in pursuing the: B.A, in Art History and Criticism; B.A and B.F.A. degrees in Art; the M.F.A. in Art; and M.A. in Art History and Criticism. Through its general education courses, the department also annually instructs numerous non-major students. Also provided over twenty years of administration to this ever-evolving academic unit, that for several years incubated the university’s now freestanding School of Architecture. This former Division of Art and Architecture had over 40 faculty members serving some 600+ major students in art, architecture and interior design programs. Administrative service roles at UTSA included: Chair of the University's Public Art Commission 1993-2003; Chair of the Graduate Assembly's Programs and Courses Committee 1989-90 and its membership Committee 1986-89; Chair of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences Faculty Review Advisory Committee for 1986-87 and 87-88; Chair of the Search Committee for Division Director of Education 1986; Chair of the Campus Food Service Advisory Committee; Chair of the Gallery Advisory Committee 1990-to present. Also committee service on: Affirmative Action and Diversity Committee; Ad-Hoc Committee to examine Faculty evaluation and merit pay processes; Ad-Hoc Committee on Information Technology; Building Advisory and Design Review Committee; Campus Signage Committee; Planning Committee for UTSA Downtown; Graduate Assembly Committees on Program Evaluation, Agenda, and Nominations; College of Fine Arts and Humanities Administrative Council; University Administrative Council; Faculty Grievance and Appeals Panel. Also 1 service on Search Committees for: Associate Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies 1991; for Dean of the College of Fine Arts and Humanities 1989-90; for Dean of the College of Science and Engineering 1992-93. At Texas Tech University: 1976-1983 Professor and Art Department Chairperson 1976-1983 Administrative work in connection with daily operation of a TTU department with over 40 faculty and 650 majors involved in various programs leading to the B.A., B.F.A., M.A.E., M.F.A., and Ph.D. degrees. Six related but distinct areas are in this department: Art Education, Art History, Design Communication, Interior Design, Two-Dimensional Studio Art and Three-Dimensional Studio Art. Three departmental galleries also reported to the chair. Responsibilities included budget, curriculum, faculty-personnel, fund-raising, and extensive service obligations to the University, community, and profession. At Northwest Missouri State University 1966-1976 Art Department Chairman 1971-76 Gallery Director 1968-76 Tenured Art Faculty Member 1969-76 Instructor Appointment 1966-69 Responsibilities included: serving as art department chair of eight full time faculty members offering the BFA degree; organizing monthly gallery exhibits and coordinated on-campus programs of four visiting visual artists per school year; initiating and developed curriculum and facilities for a variety of printmaking and photography courses; teaching courses in design, drawing, printmaking, and photography. PARTICIPATION IN PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATIONS: National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) 1978-Present: NASAD Fellow and Life Member 2003-, President of the Association (1999- 2002), Vice President (1996-1999), and Member of the Executive Committee for three separate three year terms and member of its Board of Directors for twelve years (1990-2002) in various leadership roles including, Chairman of the Commission of Accreditation, and Chairman of the Committee on Research; Member of the Task Force on Strategic Planning; Member of the Commission on Accreditation; Program evaluator, consultant and accreditation team director for numerous institutions throughout the United States. While President of NASAD was appointed to the Council of Arts 2 Accrediting Associations and its Working Group on the Arts in Higher Education for the preparation and issuing of briefing papers and analytical documents to arts administrators in higher education. National Council of Art Administrators A member of the National Council of Art Administrators (NCAA) since 1971, Broderick has served on the NCAA Board of Directors 1994-1997, its Awards of Distinction committee 94-97, and has planned, organized, and co-hosted two of their National Conferences in San Antonio during 1983 and 1995. Council of Arts Accrediting Association, 1996-2002 Elected as the first Chair and Presiding Officer of the Council of Arts Accrediting Associations and its Board of Trustees. Council members are the National Association of Schools of Art and Design, the National Association of Schools of Dance, the National Association of Schools of Music, and The National Association of Schools of Theatre. The Council facilitates communication between associations, engages in analytical and policy-oriented projects, and communicates as appropriate with a variety of organizations whose interests and actions are related to education in the arts. Council for International Exchange of Scholars- Senior Fulbright Awards Three years of service 1992-93-94 on the Art Discipline Screening Committee for Senior Fulbright Awards and Indo-American Fellowship program through the Council for International Exchange of Scholars in Washington, D.C. Texas Art Education Association/National Art Education Association, TAEA Higher Education Division Chair-Elect and Chair l990-93; frequent contributor to TAEA conferences and publications. Texas Association of Schools of Art, Member of the TASA Board of Directors l978-80 and l989-9l and Annual Chairman for 1979 and 1994 TASA Conferences in San Antonio. Society for Photographic Education, 1975-and occasionally Regional and National Member and Conference Exhibitor. TRAVEL: Britain; Canada; Ireland; Italy; Mexico; Peru; and extensively in the U.S.A. 3 James Broderick EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND: M.A. in Printmaking, School of Art, University of Iowa, 1966. Studied with Maurecio Lasansky and Robert Knipschild. Completed Graduate Printmaking major with associated areas of study in Drawing and Graphic Design…earning more than 80 graduate semester credit hours in Art and Art History studies. While at Iowa, served as Graduate Assistant to Dr. Norval Tucker, Administrative Director of the School of Art, and as Exhibition Designer and Preparator for the University of Iowa Library. B.A. in Art, St. Ambrose College, Davenport, Iowa, 1962. Studied with the eminent calligrapher and paleographer E.M. Catich. While at St. Ambrose I was appointed as photographer and graphic designer for the college and Editor of its Student Publications. Special Recognition and Honors: • Who’s Who in America • Who’s Who in American Art • Who’s Who in the South and Southwest • Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers SOME SELECTED EXAMPLES OF PERTINENT PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES: 2012 Two days of on site consultancy to Ball State University of Muncie, Indiana and its Art and Design programs on matters of curriculum, budget, faculty, and instructional resources in preparations for NASAD reaccreditation procedures. 2012 Two days of on site consultancy to Jacksonville State University of Alabama and its Art and Design programs on matters of curriculum, budget, faculty, and instructional resources in preparations for NASAD reaccreditation procedures. 2012-2011 Provided extensive on site consultancy to the University of Texas of The Permian Basin in Odessa, and the institution's visual arts program, in preparations for NASAD reaccreditation. 2011-2009 Provided extensive consultancy to Southwest School of Art in San Antonio Texas, regarding development of a BFA Degree Program, assessment of institutional readiness for National Accreditation, and addition of administrative personnel and structure. 2011-2002 Provided extensive and continual consultative services to the Ringling College of 4 James Broderick Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida, regarding: evaluation of selected academic programs; assessment of necessary additions to administration and faculty rosters; assisted with various search committee procedures; and provided a variety of timely academic and program services to the College. 2011 Provided two days of on site consultancy to Ivy Tech Community College of Terre Haute, Indiana on matters of its art and design program’s curriculum, budget, faculty, and instructional resources in preparations for initial NASAD accreditation procedures. 2011 Served as member of the NASAD visiting reaccreditation team to Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University in Grand Rapids, Michigan. 2010 Provided two days of on site consultancy to Keene State University of New Hampshire on matters of its art
